No Housekeeping

Thanks for the info. And yes, that is what I meant “room occupied”. We haven’t been here for 9 years so it has been awhile. It was just very unexpected and the thing was it made me feel unsafe. I’m a single Mom with my 14yo dd and to have this big burly man barge in scared me a bit. He could have been polite and explained himself a little better. We normally do have the latch over the door. Not sure why we didn’t that time. I’m just glad we were dressed; it was that fast and pushy. My dd was in bed under the covers resting while playing on her phone. It was just unsettling.
I totally understand. Most of the security people seem embarrassed and apologetic as they enter, but I’ve had a few who were a bit brusk. It happens so fast that you don’t really have time to process it until they’re gone.

Anyways, he walked into our bathroom, flushed the toilet, then turned around and left without explaining what the heck that was all about!

Wow, that's a pretty gross interaction. Flushed the toilet??? That's why I always have the lock on. I also have a little alarm I travel with, but usually don't take to Disney. Rethinking that...

Maybe this has to do with the lady who had the gun the other day? I know that was all over the news and they say Disney is now acting weird. Good thing you didn't stash your gun in the toilet, you know, where guns go.

These kinds of security checks have been going on for years. If you're in the room when they come, you're required to let them in. Or you can politely ask they come back later and they may be obliging, though they would not be required to. If you're not there, they'll do the same check (and flush the toilet, if that's part of their process) anyway. While there may be some guest/customer service training that needs to happen among the people doing these checks, the interaction described would be a typical security check.

I have lifetime Marriott status and now Hyatt, and spent a good amount of time in Disney hotels, and I've never seen anything like that. That whole transaction would have been a totally different experience if that guy had taken 45 seconds to be nice instead of barging it.

Of course, as a frequent, often solo female traveler, I always have the lock on, and sometimes my own lock/alarm as well. Computerized locks are just computers.

I think the thing to consider is, if you’ve never heard of these checks and you suddenly experience one, you’re going to feel like they are barging in no matter how polite they are. It’s the nature of the check. Most of the security people are super polite, but also very persistent. They have a job to do and they want to get in/out as quickly as they can.

Well, nobody's getting into my room for "security" until I call the front desk. So, he can wait, he can break down his own lock, or he can come back when I'm gone.

Exactly. He could have knocked, and when I said I’m coming, given me more than half a second to open the door. And when I did, he could have said, Hello Ma’am, How is you stay? Etc... then said well, I’m with security, and we have to do mandatory safety checks every couple days when people opt out of housekeeping. For your safety and the safety of other guests. May I come in? And when it was over, Thank you Ma’am . I hope you have a great rest of your vacation.

I think he only said 2 words. Safety check as he barged in. The whole experience was very intimidating. They could have sent a female too. Their system knew we were a single Mom and child. Oh well. It’s over. At least I know it could happen now. I was very unaware before. Hence, the initial shock. I will make sure door is latched in future when I am in room to ensure a little privacy before the invasion. Lol

You can ask them to come back later, but they may be back in 20 minutes.

If you’re not comfortable, the easiest thing to do is to step out of your room for a moment while they go in.

There isn't a hotel where I open the door for strangers to go into my room, sorry. Even in the Disney bubble. They can wait for me to call down to the front desk who will tell me the same thing. I'm not the only one who would do this either. It's basic traveling security.

You can do what you want. I'm just giving options.
If you call the front desk, they'll tell you it's Disney security. They'll tell you, you can let them in, or step outside if you're not comfortable or you can ask them to come back later.
If you don't like any of those options, well, just make sure you're not in your room during the day, and chances are they will be in and out and you'll never even know it.

Or don't opt out of housekeeping.

Ok the weirdest thing happened today. We are staying at Pop. We were in our room for a break before heading to Disney Springs for dinner so it was about 4-4:30pm. We heard a knock on the door. And a 2nd knock before I could get to the door and then I realized I didn’t have my mask on, so I turned around to grab it off the bed all the while saying just a minute. But the guy didn’t listen or didn’t care and was starting to come in our room. I did open the door about the same time he was starting to push as I could hear the handle turning. He said “I have to do a safety check” and basically just pushed past me to walk in the room. Kinda rude like. Never heard of a safety check before. Anyways, he walked into our bathroom, flushed the toilet, then turned around and left without explaining what the heck that was all about! Any ideas? The only reason I could come up with was my daughter didn’t like the idea of housekeeping coming in our room while we were gone so we put the do not disturb sign out both days we’ve been here so far. I just thought the whole thing was very odd.
They have been doing those safety checks since the shooting that happened in Nevada. There even was a long thread that discussed room checks.

I have to wonder how much COVID they're spreading around by having the same guy going from room to room, touching everyone's toilet handle. :scratchin

Keep in mind that when staying at a hotel, you're under the rules of someone else. While you have an expectation of privacy, any hotel reserves the right to enter your room at any time for any reason. Especially on private property, such as Disney. When you call the front desk from your room, you're actually calling a call center rep that may be out of state. While they may be familiar with the security checks, you're not talking to a fellow resort employee and the phone rep likely would not know the employee at your door. And FWIW, I've read reports of security checks completed by females as well.

If a big stink is made about it, it could also raise suspicion. There's nothing wrong with being cautious while traveling, but it would be easier to just step out of the room leaving the door propped open while they are inside. Its not even a 10 second process. Or, make sure to receive housekeeping service as that usually replaces the checks on the days they service your room.

The toilet flushing thing, that part made me laugh but also wonder, why was that necessary? And maybe during Covid they should limit how far into the room they walk. Taking shoes off at the door is a way to keep the room clean. Considering housekeeping isn't washing the floors during a stay now, it doesn't seem ideal to have a person's shoes go from room to room tracking along whatever is on them.
