Listening to the podcast today about the RCL cruises it was mentioned you can't bring a fan on board and I think they also said no curling irons. Is this true on all cruises?...Specifically DCL? I have to sleep with a fan at night too and have a travel fan that I bring everywhere, why wouldn't you be able to bring a fan on a cruise? And NO curling iron????? :faint: I need my curling iron, otherwise it's going to be a scary hair week. :scared1:

some cruiselines are strict about what you can bring with you. DCL is a bit more relaxed about it. You just have to make sure that you unplug everything or your room steward will do it for you.

and they have irons - regular ones - in the laundry rooms for you to use.

DCL is great. Did the Dream last September. It is regular irons that you can't bring. They have a laundry room with irons in them to iron your clothes. It's a fire hazard to have them in your room. Curling and flat irons are fine to bring with you. Not sure about the small room fan. I can't imagine that it would be a big deal. Call DCL to ask about it.

Four months and 22 days until YC for 10 day 25th Anniversary vacation. Can't wait to be alone with DH!!

We also always sleep with a fan. I think it's genetic in my family :p. It's as much for the noise as for the air circulation. We take a small one when we travel, too.

We went to Europe a couple of years ago, and I didn't want to tote a fan along. So I downloaded the App "White Noise" by TM Soft to my iPhone. I don't really like the air conditioner or fan sounds on it, but the "Airplane Travel" one worked pretty well for mimicking the sound of a fan.

If you have a smart phone, you can d/l an app with the fan sound.

Thanks for this...but does anyone know if you definitely can't bring a fan on DCL? I have a small travel one that fits in my suitcase. I need the noise, but also the breeze, I have a fan blowing on me at night even in the winter. (yes I know it's weird, my sister informs me all the time how strange I am)

The no fans, no irons, no curling irons was on RCCL.

I have brought a fan with me on DCL.

The ships are equipped with irons.

I rarely use a curling iron....so I'm not a good person to ask.

The no curling iron is really distressing!!! My hair without a curling or straight iron in the morning is just not going to happen. Even my dh who has an anything goes attitude would agree!

Thank you! This is what I wanted to know. :thumbsup2 I know it's silly, but I need my fan.

Can't get over you can't bring curling irons or I assume flat irons either on RCCL, were there even any women on RCCL? And if so, how was their hair?

I've brought curling irons and flat irons on RCCL before and have never had any problems. We're sailing on RCCL again in Sept. and I'm really hoping they don't take my flat iron away!!

Here is the "what not to pack" list straight from RCCL. I'm planning on brining my curling iron in my purse or carry-on with the rules rubber banded to it. The problem with this list is that RCCL says "these and similar items will be confiscated".

What Not To Pack
Weapons, illegal drugs, and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited. The United States Transportation Security Administration also recommends that you do not pack fragile or expensive items (such as jewelry) in checked luggage.
The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned.
Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas.
*Sharp Objects, including knives and scissors.
Illegal Drugs & Substances
Candles & Incense
Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, & Hot Plates
Baseball Bats, Hockey Sticks, Cricket Bats, Bows & Arrows
Skateboards & Surfboards
Martial Arts Gear
Self-Defense Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks.
Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks.
HAM Radios
Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint.
**Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverages
Note:

*Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.
** Alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports-of-call or from shops onboard will be stored by the ship and delivered to you on the last day of the sailing. Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned.

One of the items that always gets forgotten in discussions of this type is safety. You are on a big metal slab, floating on water, with electricity running through the big metal slab. Now if you are at home, you can check this out. Take off your shoes, stand in the bathtub full of water, and touch an open wire plugged into the wall that is not properly grounded. Beware: It will hurt! It may cause Death!

One of the major issues at sea is poorly made consumer electrical devices. These are made for the land, not floating on a metal platform surrounded by water. Electrical safety is a major issue at sea. And proper grounding is a difficult and an ongoing process.

I am not trying to be a Troll on this issue, but I think that Disney is too lax when it comes to allowing all the electrical devices on the ship that they do. Being on a ship that is hot, dark, and quite is no fun at all.

Regards,
Chuck

Please don't even jokingly suggest somebody try that.

As far as electrical things on board goes, they are perfectly safe if used correctly. Disney actually provides a hair dryer in each of the cabins that run on 220 volts, rather than the US standard 110.

I just got off the Oasis on Saturday and both my wife and daughter brought curling irons and flat irons for their hair on board. Neither of which were confiscated. They even have a drawer with a metal perforated bottom for you to place them in while they are still warm.

A friend of mine got some pretty bad electrical burns on an RCCL cruise ship several years ago. The culprit was the room hair dryer that she was using because hers was confiscated. The compensation was a bill from the ships doctor.

This is not a knock on RCCL I cruise them often, but the logic that an electrical appliance being supplied by the ship is somehow better or safer then mine are is a little silly.

I was just on Oasis of the Seas(RCCL) last month and had no problem taking my flat iron onboard. :thumbsup2

My last cruise in November I brought on a hand steamer instead of an iron.

So glad someone asked this question! My hair would be disaster without a straightening iron - especially with the sea air! :scared1:
