Is it possible to get away WITHOUT having your dress steamed the day of the wedding? I just looked at the website to one of the dress steamers that disney recommends and you can't just get your dress done.. they have a minimum amount of things that have to be steamed...

like one bridal gown and two suits and a dress or something.

did any of you get married and NOT steam your dress?

Did you try Carolyn Allen?

They were letting me get just my dressed steamed. The range they gave me was like $60 - $90 before I knew my fabric content. Once I gave them that, they quoted me $85. Additional items/dresses are $15.

On the same note, I was wondering if anyone had brought there own steamer to use...we are driving down and I have a wonderful steamer I am thinking about using. I will ask a professional first I guess even though I have steamed a lot of delicate fabrics many times...

any thoughts??? (not to steal your thread re: steaming at all!!! sorry!)

I'd be careful with that...certain materials need special care. I wouldn't recommend it unless you know for certain you aren't going to ruin your gown...even then I'd be leary...

yeah, I know. I have used it on every imaginable material over the last 2 1/2 years though...lace, satin, silk, you name it. I only use distilled water in it and I am pretty careful with how close I place it next to items...

When I look at pics of girls on here having theirs steamed, the steamer the person is using always looks exactly like mine! It kills me to think I could just bring mine along and save myself $85!!!

We'll see.... I'll talk to my favorite dry cleaner and whichever bridal shop I go with!

I steamed my dress twice--once before the wedding and once before our MK photo shoot and it was fine. However, my dress was super-simple and was made of...well, I can't remember off the top of my head but it wasn't very delicate.

Luna, if you're travelling with the dress, it will likely get wrinkled, won't it?

Yeah...I would just consult a professional and if you feel comfortable I'd go for it...hey you could use that $85 for a nice dinner out! ;)

My wife bought her dress in Florida the year before, a few days after i proposed to her!! She thought she might as well get started early!!

We brought it back to the UK in a suitcase that we bought in Florida just for the dress. We then took it back to Florida for the wedding the following year.

Amazingly the dress didn't need steaming or anything - it was transported inside a dress protector inside the case and left to hang freely at home and then in the US for a few days before the wedding.

As it survived the trip to the UK without much problem we decided not to bother booking a steam.

I think the only thing we did was give it a bit of natural steam by hanging it in the bathroom and run a hot bath and left it an hour!

I don't know if it was because it was a particular material or what, but it didn't look creased or anything!!

I'm not going to get mine steamed. It has been in the bag for a while now, and everytime I pull it out, it still looks great. So, I am just going to hang it up in the room when we get there. We get there 4 days before the wedding.

You sound a bit like my wife!! She would disappear, and when i went looking for her i was told to keep out of the bedroom as she was looking at the dress!! She had to try it on a few times too "just to make sure it still fitted ok"!!

luna - are you driving or flying? I drove (it was only 2.5 hours though) and I had my gown pressed/steamed/whatever at the bridal boutique the day before the wedding. They put it in a big bag so it wouldn't get "smooshed" and helped me put it in my car (my gown and me were the only things that fit in my little Civic!). Then when I got to Disney I hung it up. It was fine the next day and probably would have been fine for several days. If it had gotten a little wrinkled I would have hung it in the bathroom with some shower steam. If you're flying and have to pack it into a small suitcase though, you will likely need it steamed or pressed.

I'll be steaming my own as well. I worked for David's Bridal for a while, and lucky me, had to do some of the pressing for my brides if they were too busy in alterations. One of the best things to do is to steam from the underside of your gown. This way it doesn't leave any marks and won't damage fabric. If the dress is really wrinkled, steam on the outside of the fabric just on those spots. Good luck!

I didnt steam mine it was and it was a really heavy satin dress packed and travelled from the uk to florida! I just hung it up as soon as we arrived and it was fine.

I didn't have my dress steamed in FL either. IT was steamed immediately before I picked it up from the dress shop, and it stayed in the garment bag until we arrived in FL. Once in Florida, I hung it up and spread out the train. It was fine for the both the wedding and the MK photo shoot. I would speak with your seamstress though, because depending on the material of your dress, it may not travel well.

My dress traveled very well. It just needed touch ups, which we did. My uncle used my not so great steamer to do my veil, and everything turned out great!

Also remember, if you iron it, don't go crazy, start on a low setting, and iron from the inside.

I didn't have mine steamed. I didn't fly with it though so I'm not sure how that would affect it.

Thanks so much ladies! This is very reassuring for me! I do not plan to have a heavy dress since my wedding will (hopefully) be Aug 8, 2008. But, I am also driving and plan to be in FL a few days before the ceremony. So hopefully the dress will have some "hang time" to let any wrinkles fall out, and I'll bring my steamer, just in case!

I do appreciate the tip on steaming from inside the dress though! I'll start doing that with some of my other clothing!

Thanks again for probably saving me some $$! You're the best!:wizard:

I'm flying and the airline we are on doesn't have a hanging closet so I think I'm going to have to pack it in a suitcase! :( ... (sorry it took so long to get back to this post! ) and here's the dress (only it's in ivory, not that pink!)

the material is chiffon. so what do you guys think? anyone who worked at a bridal shop have an expert opinion?

I don't have an expert opinion on steaming, but just had to jump in and say what a gorgeous dress that is! I may be a little biased because it sort of resembles mine, but I think it'll be a great look for your wedding!
