NMAmy's Spring Break 2010 Trip Report--Girls Gone Mild! Update 5/18

March 19 – Continued

We settled our stuff into our spiffy new room and looked longingly at the beds. SOOO tired--MUST nap... But we knew that if we gave in to the temptation, we’d sleep right through dinner. Since we had skipped lunch in our eagerness to arrive on Disney property (Food?? Who needs food??) I was starving. And we had some rockin’ dinner reservations at Sanaa. Our reservation was for 5:00 but it was 3:00 now and you know how long it takes to get to another resort on Disney transportation. Seriously. You all know how long it takes, right? An hour or more! At the very least, on a good day, with all the stars aligning just so, it takes at least an hour to get from resort to resort unless you're close enough to walk. Especially if you’re running late. Apparently, though, if you’re insanely early, that means the buses are fueled with pixie dust and you will arrive at your destination WAY before your reservation.

We walked over to the Pop bus stop

CIMG2194.jpg

And within a couple of minutes, a pixie dust fueled bus magically appeared. We had the best bus driver EVER. A family got on the bus after us with a little boy and a little girl. He sauntered back and handed the boy a pirate bandana and the girl a little pin. He then walked back to the front of the bus and came back with a roll of stickers. Honestly, I wished I’d gotten his name because this is a bus driver you want to be immortalized in a trip report. He had like a little store up at the front of the bus with all sorts of items for the good girls and boys. He was the Santa of Pop bus drivers, if you will. Perhaps he used flying reindeer instead of pixie dust to get the bus from one location to another.

The kids got their loot and then he strolled past me and noticed me eying the stickers. He kind of raised an eyebrow and tilted the stickers toward me inquiringly. To which I replied, “Oh, ABSOLUTELY!” He gave me a Mickey sticker and made me a very happy camper. I have simple tastes.

We were then off to the Animal Kingdom and had barely departed our Pop bus when the AKL bus arrived. Are you kidding me??? This NEVER happens. We arrived at Kidani at 3:30. Seriously. Half hour, start to finish of bus rides including a transfer and a bus driver handing out prizes.

We went into the lobby and found our way downstairs to Sanaa. No, I don’t know how to pronounce it even though three people pronounced it for me and one nice lady told me the meaning of it which I’ve now forgotten and apparently I didn’t feel it was worthy of writing in my trip notes. My guess now would be Best Food EVER.

The lady at the check-in desk was very kind and told me that dinner service didn’t start until 5:00 (our reservation time) but we could have appetizers in the bar. Alex loves Indian food and this reservation was for him and he wanted dinner, darn it. So, we waited. We sat in the lobby for awhile but I was so hungry, this was the only picture I took. It’s a very small lobby but had a lot of people running around so we people watched for awhile.

CIMG2202.jpg

When I was falling asleep on the comfy couch, we headed on down to the animal observation area to watch the animals eat THEIR dinner. They were so show offy about it.

CIMG2205.jpg

The giraffes were the worst. I could hear them taunting me, "Mmm, Thomas, did you try this hay? It's FABULOUS!"

CIMG2208.jpg

Caitlin called when we were outside and they’d made it to the airport and had checked in for their flight and gone through security. For once, the kid had no issues with air travel which was nice. I’d talked her and Brittany into flying out on Friday night because they wouldn’t have arrived until evening on Saturday—wasting an entire day. This had messed with Caitlin’s math class because I’d forgotten that Lubbock, Texas (the airport they flew out on) is on Central time instead of Mountain time like New Mexico. I’m a bad, bad mommy. Luckily, her teacher had another class earlier in the day that Cait attended instead.

I was so excited when we were finally paged to go in for dinner. I was ready to wrestle one of the giraffes for some hay at this point. The dinner seating is begun with a song and LOTS of drumming. Really loud drumming. Of course, that’s when Caitlin called to tell me they were on the plane. I had to wander way down a hall almost out to the animal feeding area in order to hear her.

Our server was Simon. Yes, I remember his name. Why, you ask? Because I wrote it down in my notes. My notes also say that Simon and Alex bonded because they are both British expats and Simon was from Birmingham but had lost most of his accent. We talked a lot about Birmingham. Instead of ordering our meal, you know.

Simon interrupted Alex to ask if he could explain the menu and I jumped into the opening. “PLEASE!” We started with the bread service which was so fantastic that I practically wolfed it down. Three kinds of bread including naan. We got the chile, the hummus, and the mango chutney to go along with it. We had fun mixing the different combinations of toppings. My favorite was chile and hummus, just in case you were wondering.

I don’t take pictures of food so you’ll just have to take my word for it that it looked as great as it tasted. For entrees, Alex got the combo with the short ribs and the chicken in red curry. He took a bite of the ribs and looked like he’d died and gone to heaven. He made me try the ribs and I told him I really liked the flavor. Too noncommittal for him, apparently. I’m not a beef fan. He told me, “If that does not convert you to a beef lover right this second, then nothing ever will.” He shook his head in disappointment at me.

I had the chicken in red curry and the prawns in green curry. I loved the chicken and was kind of ho hum about the prawns. They just weren’t as flavorful. I washed it all down with a couple of Tusker beers. I have a friend whose dd told me I had to try Tusker beer when I was at WDW. She’d had it in Kenya and it was her favorite beer ever. Of course, since she was only 19 at the time, it was the first beer she’d ever purchased which I was concerned might have something to do with her assessment. It was very tasty, though. Apparently, tasty enough for me to have two.

We’ll be doing this meal every trip from now on. After we were done, Alex told me, “It was so much more than I’d expected. The food at WDW is pretty good most of the time but this was just exceptional.” High praise, indeed.

Our bus mojo continued—as we arrived at the bus stop, the Epcot bus pulled up. Since we were in no rush (again), we hopped on that one to transfer there.

As we arrived at Epcot, I realized something strange. I had never, ever arrived at Epcot by bus. I had no idea they had a big sign over the road like that! We always go by monorail or through the International Gateway. So, I started out my first day by seeing something totally new!

Of course, our Pop bus arrived before we’d barely gotten to the bus stop. I have to say that the day we didn’t really have to be anywhere was, of course, the day we had the best luck with transportation! I love the Pop bus music. On the way back, I heard Chubby Checker singing The Twist and the Go-Go’s singing We’ve Got the Beat. SO much more fun than the boring Tower of Terror music and seagulls they play on the Boardwalk buses.

We were so tired by this point. We headed back to the room and read and watched tv until I heard that the girls had made their last flight. Here's a snippet of our conversation:

Me: Did you guys get something to eat in the airport? Because everything closes at midnight and there's nowhere to get you any food.

Caitlin: Mom, we've eaten like five times. We'll be fine.

Then I took a nap until they called me at 11:15 to ask about how to get to ME. I waited for them to call when they’d arrived but both of their phones were dead—Luckily I called just as they’d found an outlet so I met them in the lobby. And guess what? They were starving. :lmao:

We scored connecting rooms which I hadn't requested but it was handy. I went back to my room and got all my dollars and change and we found them a vending machine and loaded them up with snacks and then, finally, I was able to sleep.

Updates, yayyy!

He kind of raised an eyebrow and tilted the stickers toward me inquiringly. To which I replied, “Oh, ABSOLUTELY!” He gave me a Mickey sticker and made me a very happy camper.

Great!! I love it when I hear stories of adults getting free stuff too! Score! :thumbsup2

The giraffes were the worst. I could hear them taunting me, "Mmm, Thomas, did you try this hay? It's FABULOUS!"

Hehehehehee! I was drinking a glass of Coke when I was reading this, and very nearly spit it out all over my laptop! :lmao:

Yum, Sanaa sounds fabulous!! I love curries and dips and anything spicy. We'll definitely have to go there on our next visit to Disney... in 2024! Heh!

Hey, I wonder if you went to Raglan Road this trip?! I remember having chats with you about it and trying to convince you to go!

Good news that Caitlin and Brittany made it safe and sound... albeit hungry! Can't wait to find out what you all got up to the next day! More, more! :yay:

This segment was full-on funny. I don't care WHAT Loubon says about you.

Food?? Who needs food??
Wait a minute...who ARE you?

Damn, this is so true. As you found out.

He gave me a Mickey sticker and made me a very happy camper. I have simple tastes.
Alex is a lucky man.

We were then off to the Animal Kingdom and had barely departed our Pop bus when the AKL bus arrived. Are you kidding me??? This NEVER happens.
Only when you're early, as you so eloquently pointed out.

The giraffes were the worst. I could hear them taunting me, "Mmm, Thomas, did you try this hay? It's FABULOUS!"
:rotfl:

I was so excited when we were finally paged to go in for dinner. I was ready to wrestle one of the giraffes for some hay at this point.
And you probably would have won.

We started with the bread service which was so fantastic that I practically wolfed it down.
That's because you were hungry. Like Eddie Murphy used to say, a starving man that has been given a cracker will find it's the most delicious cracker that he's ever had.

Three kinds of bread including naan.
We LOVE Indian food! Naan is so delicious.

I don’t take pictures of food

You sold me!

And guess what? They were starving.
Kids these days.

Your trip report title pulled me right in! Loving your report and will be checking on your progress frequently!

You just have to give them the puppy dog eyes.

Hey, I wonder if you went to Raglan Road this trip?! I remember having chats with you about it and trying to convince you to go!

Oh, you have to go back before 2024! I love your trip reports and I'll be too old to read the computer by then.

We were going to go to Raglan Road but ended up skipping it. Alex and I did try it on our last trip and I loved it. Definitely next time, though!

This segment was full-on funny. I don't care WHAT Loubon says about you.

I'm glad you liked it. And unless Loubon PM's one of us, we won't know what he says about me, will we? :rotfl:

Wait a minute...who ARE you?

I KNOW!! Crazy, isn't it?? I was just too antsy to stop and eat. I did have that tiny bag of pretzels on the plane, it's a wonder that didn't hold me until dinner.

Alex is a lucky man.

Well, sure. All he had to do was drop several thousand dollars on a Disney vacation and a Mickey sticker and I was all set.

That's because you were hungry. Like Eddie Murphy used to say, a starving man that has been given a cracker will find it's the most delicious cracker that he's ever had.

I had no idea Eddie Murphy was so wise.

You sold me

You won't regret it! And I knew any photos I took could not compare with your photos of veggie burgers. I was too intimidated to try to compete.

Your trip report title pulled me right in! Loving your report and will be checking on your progress frequently!

Welcome, Rozz! I'm so glad you're reading along and I love your name and avatar.

And, yes, hucifer, once again, you were right about the trip report title. (This is just killing me, you know.)

I'm glad you liked it. And unless Loubon PM's one of us, we won't know what he says about me, will we?
That's the thing about him e-mailing just me...I have complete control. Mwahahahahahaha.

Well, sure. All he had to do was drop several thousand dollars on a Disney vacation and a Mickey sticker and I was all set.

For a minute there, I thought you were kidding.

And, yes, hucifer, once again, you were right about the trip report title. (This is just killing me, you know.)
:teeth:

Wow, you did have some good luck with buses! It was either really good for us or really bad.

Sanaa sounds so yummy! We'll have to try it out some time.

glad the girls got there and you finally got your sleep!
The bread at Sanaa sounds Delicious
I didn't know they had different music on different buses-good to know
looking forward to day one of the parks

For a minute there, I thought you were kidding.

Oh, no, I was totally serious. :lmao:

Wow, you did have some good luck with buses! It was either really good for us or really bad.

Sanaa sounds so yummy! We'll have to try it out some time.

It was the end of our bus luck, sadly! Sanaa was great but I'm trying to keep it on the down low so that it doesn't become the next hard to get ADR, like Le Cellier. :rotfl: So, I'm only telling all of you, my very best pals.

glad the girls got there and you finally got your sleep!
The bread at Sanaa sounds Delicious
I didn't know they had different music on different buses-good to know
looking forward to day one of the parks

I recommend riding the Pop bus just to hear the music, if you get the chance! We still have a ways to go before we get to the park. We'll be doing the hotel switch next.

Don't know how to do yellow boxes. :headache:

Great bus mojo!

The nerve of those giraffes to not offer you hay when you clearly looked starving.

Sounds like a great first night dinner.

Yay that the girls arrived safely! (I hate flying.)

Do vending machines still actually take change at DW? I think a bag of chips and a snickers bar will cost you about $10 now, no coins needed.

Will be waiting for your first park day now.:woohoo:

Don't know how to do yellow boxes. :headache:

:lmao: That's okay, it's not a requirement. If you want to use them sometime, just quote the entire passage, then cut and paste the /QUOTE (with the brackets around it) at the end of the portion you want to quote. Write your comments and then to do another one, cut and paste the QUOTE at the beginning of the first post.

The nerve of those giraffes to not offer you hay when you clearly looked starving.

I know! Giraffes are totally selfish.

Do vending machines still actually take change at DW? I think a bag of chips and a snickers bar will cost you about $10 now, no coins needed.

Oh, sure they take change. A whole LOT of change. Actually, Alex and I (unbeknownst to each other) had both been collecting $1 bills for a week before we left so we'd have change for tips. The girls wiped out our stash plus all my change in about 5 minutes. :lmao: A pop is around $3 and each snack was $2 - $3 each. :scared1: And they eat a lot.

Now Disney World is just taunting me. I received my April “Hello!” email. WTH? My trip is done, why are they sending me an email? Just to say “Nanner, nanner, we know your trip is over now”? No, of course not, they’re emailing to tell me about the great deals they have for summer travel. Sigh. I don’t think I can talk Alex into another trip so soon. Anyway, back to the actual trip report.

Saturday, March 20, 2010
Even with no sleep, I was still up by 6:00. I was at Disney World, dang it, there’s no sleeping at Disney World! Up and at ‘em, pal!

I coaxed Alex into going to the food court with me by promising him coffee. His one big problem with the values is the lack of a coffee pot. He believes it a travesty that you could pay for a hotel room and a coffee pot would not be part of the deal.

It wasn’t horribly crowded that early in the morning. We each had a croissant—he had coffee and I had Diet Coke. After breakfast, we wandered around the resort to explore and take some pictures
.
And I have to admit something here. I’m usually not a huge fan of the values. All Star Sports (I can’t use the acronym that I call it in my head which is non DIS appropriate) and I did not get along for many reasons. Not my cup of tea. But there was just something about Pop Century that I really liked. Maybe the smell of the freshly refurbished room addled my senses. Maybe it was all the things in the 1970’s section that reminded me of my childhood. It did seem as though the room was just the tiniest big bigger than the All Star rooms. I didn’t have to hop over the toilet to close the door and there was more space between the bed and the wall. That’s all I needed, really, to consider the Pop Century a superior value hotel. I could see us staying here again and not be chomping at the bit to get the heck out of there.

So here’s some photos from our walk around the resort. It was only 49 degrees that morning and we could see our breath but the weatherman promised it would warm up to the high 70’s—making it very difficult to dress weather appropriately.

Step into my time machine and journey back with me to the 1950's.

Bobby socks, juke boxes. Sunday, Monday, Happy Days.

And Lady:
CIMG2209.jpg

I totally think the Imagineers missed a golden opportunity when they didn't put a huge bowl of spaghetti in the center of the courtyard with a big strand of spaghetti stretching between these two. Disney needs to hire me.

Moving on in our time machine to the 1960's. I could tell Alex did not grow up in the U.S. when he had NO idea what the heck this was:

CIMG2215.jpg

He asked me, "Why do they have a giant giraffe and elephant in a can?"

Peace, love, and rock & roll prevail around the Hippie Dippie Pool. Caitlin is on a 1960's kick right now--she loves everything hippie-ish and is fascinated with Woodstock. She's made her auntie and Alex tell her everything they could about their teen years during the 60's. Since I was a tiny child at the time, I can tell her about Play-Doh. ;) It's not really as cool as Auntie's and Alex's stories, you know?

CIMG2214.jpg

Mowgli and Baloo:
CIMG2213.jpg

The Generation Gap Bridge. I think it's sad that the 1900's - 1940's refuse to reach across the lake and meet us halfway, don't you? Greatest Generation, my foot.

CIMG2218.jpg

Pop Century: The Depression Years. Brother, can you spare a dime to further the completion of these rooms? Sheesh, this looks awful.

CIMG2217.jpg

More peace and flower power:

CIMG2216.jpg

Our building had the Mickey phone:

CIMG2222.jpg

Lookin' good, Mickey! Can you take a message for me, please?

Who knew Goofy had such a rockin' car? Although I'm not sure how he fits into it. He seems a little big.

CIMG2221.jpg

Then, I finally found what I'd been looking for. The little signs for each year telling of the great accomplishments that happened at that time. And, yes, this is my first of many appearances in this trip report--I got the PhotoPass cd so there is actual evidence that I went on vacation.

The year I was born. Yes, great things happened. Martin Luther King and the instamatic camera.

CIMG2219.jpg

See that Michigan State sweatshirt? That thing became the bane of my existence on this trip. Never wear a team shirt during the Final Four. Especially if you're not able to chat intelligently about basketball. Cait had a shirt that said, "New Mexico State" at the top, then a logo and under that "Cheerleading Championships". She had to stop wearing it because everyone asked if she was an Aggie. (She's not.)

Then we walked. And walked. And walked some more back in time. And walked. And just when I thought we'd run out of resort, we found Alex's year.

CIMG2220.jpg

Sheesh, that was a long way! And for what?? Ricky and Lucy? It was a bit anticlimactic. That was the most important thing that happened that year? How disappointing. Alex looks less than thrilled that our long walk resulted in THIS. But he DOES have coffee so life is not all bad now, is it?

We went back to the room and I bravely stuck my head through the adjoining door and suggested the girls might want to get up in order to meet our 11:00 checkout time. They got up without too much trouble. Okay, Brittany got up with no trouble at all. Caitlin growled at me, came into our room, and crawled into bed in our room—trying to get Alex to protect her from me, the big bad waker upper woman.

Alex & I went to the food court to get some breakfast for the girls and, by then, it was a madhouse. We managed to get in and get what we needed without smacking anyone but it was a close thing. Okay, maybe I wasn’t digging the value thing so much at this point.

After some nagging, everyone was ready. I’d had express checkout but since Cait didn’t have a credit card and I couldn’t figure out how to put mine on the online check-in for her, she had to check out of a hotel for the first time ever. We had too much luggage for a regular taxi so the valet loaded us into a taxi van to hold all our crap..err, priceless items. And now we were off to our third and final hotel, the Boardwalk Villas. The Boardwalk check in was empty but, no big surprise, our room wasn’t ready. Brittany was wowed when she walked into the lobby.

We checked all our luggage with Bell Services. I made a big deal out of the girls making sure they had everything they needed and then had to go back twice myself!

I told the CM that I was a troublemaker when I had to put my jacket into one of the bags after he’d tagged them. Then on the way out the door, I realized I’d forgotten my camera and had to flag him down again. That’s when he told me, “You really ARE a troublemaker, aren’t you?” Yes, yes, I am.

Next up--we do actually finally make it to a park!

Enjoying your report, and can't wait to read more.

I'm from Haslett and we were just down in the World in Feb. I constantly wore my MSU apparel. Met so many CM who were from MI and even a few MSU students who were in the Disney College Program.

My son and I chatted up the basketball stuff, the wife and daughter not so much. We stayed at the Boardwalk and watched the Super Bowl at the ESPNZone. Great FUN!!!!

Keep up the good work.:thumbsup2

I loved those date signs!
When I stayed at Pop, I was in the 90's, which I loved as I'm completely a Disney Decade girl. However, I loved that walking to my room I went through eras that may or may not have been my mother's youth ;), and my sibling's and in-law's youths.

Well, hi there, neighbor! I'm so glad you're reading along! Thank you for the very kind compliments.

I did actually meet a few people from Michigan this trip. I was really tickled when they didn't want to talk basketball. ;)

Keep warm today--looks like we have better weather headed our way next week!

Hey, Hedy! I loved the date signs, too. I wanted to take the girls' photo by their year but by the time we finally got them packed up and out of the room, I was rushing to get to the check out and completely forgot about it. I never even got over to the 80's and 90's sections.

Never got an email from Disneyworld, not a "Hello" email or a pin code and we've been there many times. (For the first time in 17 years we don't have a trip in their reservation system. :sad1: Maybe they'll notice, get worried and send us an offer.)

Like your pics around Pop, makes me miss the place. We were last there for Christmas week 2009. I know what you are saying about the food court mid morning, it IS a madhouse in there. That's why we do everything early and off hours.

You look like you were born in 1983 in that picture, no way 1963! (I'm a 1961 girl.)

Sounds like the transition to the Boardwalk is going smoothly, even with the troublemaking and all.

Michigan State is becoming the bane of my existance.

DD13 wants to major in pre-vet, so is she thinking about The Ohio State University, with one of the premier veterinary programs in the country? No, no she isn't. She likes Michigan State. With their pretty barns and stupid nice campus. I swear I'm gonna tatoo a big, red "O" on her forehead one of these nights. But (and don't tell her this), I really like the school, too (we're going to be in Lansing tomorrow for a cattle show).

Awesome update. I love the pics. Keep it coming!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! That's just wrong that they don't email you the way they should. ;)

Going early is always my plan, too. College girls, on the other hand, like to sleep in. Sigh.

You are totally my new favorite poster on the DIS boards. :lmao: I heart you.

:rotfl: Why, oh, why do they never want to go to school close to home? They do have pretty barns and a stupid nice campus at MSU, though. East Lansing is a nice town, as well. And if she comes to school here, I'd be happy to be her emergency backup. Now if I can just find a DIS'er close to DD in NM to be her emergency backup, I'd be all set.

I hope you have a great time at the cattle show. I am sad to admit that I did not even know there was going to be a cattle show in town. :lmao:

The weather drove me crazy on this trip. The afternoons (except Sunday of course :sad2:) were so beautiful but the mornings were so cool. It was irritating to try to figure out what to wear. We all usually wound up in shorts and a jacket.

Can't wait to hear about your first park day!
