1000 days divided by 26 years is 38.5 days a year average........ I am jealous

I bought my 5er used for 10,000 x 6% sales tax = 10600 + 200 license registration comes to 10800 out the door

I have owned it for 6 years x 200 for ins= 1200 for the priviledge of owning her...

I work full time and so does the better half= 10 vacation days a year for a total of 60 days for the 6 year example..

You must factor in the difference for your tow vehicle....remember you would prolly use a minivan to your destination instead of a truck...my truck new $35,000 - $20,000 minivan = $ 15,000 TV expense

So I am looking at 12,000 TT cost + $15,000 TV = $27,000 Life style choice

Divide that by 60 = $ 450 per nite at 6 years (I did not factor in any maintainence or storage expense )

There is no economic value to rving after looking at the big picture....strictly a Lifestyle thing ....sometimes more for some and less for others....Of course the RV sales man will tell ya different..........

Smile... if I understand the abreviation DVC is Disney Vacation Club. So DVC was MORE than the trailer and you can only go to Disney?? I would rather take my trailer everywhere, especially national parks or national forest campgrounds. Half the time we have no hook-ups where we go. We like to camp, fish and hike so Disneyworld is not our normal vacation. We often school as we go as well. So it is probably a lifestyle choice as well.

Actually with DVC you can travel to over 1000 locations not just Disney. We only ever go to Disney but we have many many options. We paid 14K to join DVC and paid close to 10K for the tent trailer my wife bought. We can't use the tent trialer to travel to many of the locations we are considering like going to europe with our DVC points so for us DVC was by far the best choice for us. The trailer is used to take the kids away camping around Ontario where we live and that is pretty much it other than next Oct when we pull it to Florida beyond that it woun't leave our province. Not only that but out tent trailer won't do much for us when we go to BC in 2010 for the winter Olympics we are using our DVC points to stay at Whistler.

There are so many variables that come into play with owning your RV as opposed to hotels. I think that the ages of your family members can also be one of them. What might be less economical for a couple is probably more so when you are talking about airfare for a family of 5 or 7. Even the ages your kids are at..if they travel with you or not are all variables. I think these numbers are going to change over the course of ones lifetime and your involvement with RV'ing. There are times when it's going to be more economical than a hotel, and times during your lifetime when it's simply your choice to vacation this way. Either way RV'ing is a lifestyle choice that folks who have only stayed in a hotel may never be able to appreciate. They don't know what they are missing. I consider myself lucky to appreciate both. Personally..I love the RV. My kids (16, and 20)...they want the hotels. They are sick of the RV. I don't think I'll ever tire of it. We have an older son (27) who didn't RV with us when he was younger..as by the time we bought our camper he was already 17. There are times when my husband and I want to use the camper for an "alone" weekend..and as his father likes to say..."We can't shake the kid!"...Go figure. He actually uses it more than we do. So while the kids get to a point where they go away from it for a while, I think as they age they will come back around to appreciating the RV experience. Well...okay..maybe not my daughter..she's definetly more the "Beach Club" type.

If you compare driving down to the fort with a RV vs driving down with a minivan..........the minivan will win every time....but hey.... thats not my style

Yep this was me! My parents tented once with us as kids and swore never to do canvas again! They went out and bought a caravan (that's English speak for small travel trailer) and have now owned one for 30+ years. I went with them (all over the UK and France) until I was 17. Som eyears we had 60+ nights away in the "van". Funnily enough just before I had kids of my own, DH & I decied to invest $800 in 20 year old 'caravan' to see if we liked it outselves, and that was it - we were hooked, and once we settled over here in the US, we went out bought our Travel Trailer.

My brother however has said that I have "passed over the dark side". Maybe he'll change his mind once he has rugrats of his own?

I wouldn't stay anywhere else but the Fort in our motorhome. You just can't beat it!

Yes it adds up when for 10 yrs. from around 1996 to 2006 we camped for 4 days for every PSU home game so that's 24 to 28 days. Each year we also whet to Chicago for a week to 10 days and with two nights there and two nights back there's another 14 days. While not in that older trailer as I said we will spend close to 80+ days at FW in the next year and also 6 days going/coming from FW. Between 1986 and 2006 we stayed at FW for 239 days over 13 trips so we also have over 52 days to/from FW over those 20 years. We also lived in our trailer for almost 40 days back in 1984 waiting for our home to be finished and in 2004 we traveled for close to 60 days visiting friends and relatives from Texas, to San Diego, to Stockton, Ca, Chicago, and Ann Arbor. All this does not cover the many, many 3 or 4 day get aways when the kids were growing up. I might even have more than that 1,000 days since with just the major items listed above there are close to 800 days in our trailer.

As far as a tow vehicle I replaced a 1978 Ford Van with a 460 that was used to tow that trailer with the 2001 Ford PSD Van I have now. I needed a new Van and got it on the X-plan and the diesel option was only around $2,500 more that the V-10 option and the total Van cost me well under $30,000. It was a cargo van with a lot of options which I finished off the interior for well under $1,000. That 1978 Van cost me $9500 back in 1979 so my total RV sunk costs in trailers and TV over the last almost 30 years has been just under $65,000 and the two Vans were always used not just for towing. Both trailers and both Vans were bought new with the older trailer actually used, but only for 3 days and still had the plastic on the sheets.

Now if you get into a 5er or MH you can really spend the bucks since you can't get a basic diesel truck cheap like you can a Van and a MH really has limited use other than for RVing.
