Nintendo DSi or iTouch?

I require help on what to suggest to "Santa" for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. I have seen both gaming systems for similar cost and now don't know which one to lean towards.

There are good points for both:
Nintendo DSi
1. My daughter already owns a Nintendo DS lite thus she has some games and the charger unit. 2. The new one looks likes loads of fun with the camera and voice applications.

iTouch
1. We have iPhones already thus we have an account set up and some cool games she loves playing already. We also have the chargers for in the car and the computer. 2. She can surf the internet (Wi-fi) without us having to download that feature like in the DSi, and hear her music without us having to download it to a SD card which the DSi requires.

Please help me help "Santa" decide which one she would probably enjoy more. She loves playing with both her Nintendo lite and our iPhones. I have not seen a Nintendo DSi and don't know of anyone that has one.

Thank you,

My almost 10yo plays with his ipod touch a whole lot more then his DS. He uses it for games, movies and listening to music - isn't at the stage where he's on the internet with it much.

Thank you for reminding me about the movie aspect of it. I had forgotten about being able to watch movies too. My DD only surfs when I am near by in the house or in a restaurant with us right there by her. I am trying to think of what would be good now and in the future still have an appeal for her.

Thanks,

how do you watch movies? Do you need to download your movies onto computer then transfer to Itouch? I know my DD would love Santa to bring this but i dont want the hassle of downloading movies etc

You can rip your own DVDs using various software, depending on what computer you have. Handbrake for MacIntosh, or what I use, Slysoft for PC. CloneDVDmobile has a specific iTouch, zune etc settings, so it takes all the guesswork out of it. The software isn't free, but I find it's worth the price.

I just got an iPod Touch for myself, and I am constantly "fighting" my 7 year old for it! She loves playing on it more than her DS. She doesn't surf on it, but does enjoy the music, and all the free downloaded apps I put on it for her. I'm sure she will soon enjoy using it for the internet. But she hasn't touched her DS since I got the Touch. I would say to definitely go with that for your 10 year old!

Thank you for all of the responses. Myself personally am quite challenged in the tech. dept. thus DH has all those duties. Lucky for me he doesn't mind and likes doing those things. I will tell him about the Slysoft program for the iTouch if we do go this way. Like I said, we do have iPhones, but we don't use them to play movies but DD would love that feature if Santa brought her one. I think Santa may be leaning more towards the iTouch as it seems to me less hassle for DH to program a new iTouch which would be similar to the technology we have then try to fiddle around with a DSi.

I am finding it hard as DD is flip flopping like a fish on which one she would like more. Once again, thank you for all the input.

I'd definatly go with the itouch - you can do so much more with it. We found it to be a blessing when we had a 12 hr travelling day with 3 flights this summer - we travelled with the docking station and the wall plug we had for it and re-charged in between flights. There is also a device we bought from Blacks that gives you another 3/4 charge for $20.

Ipod touch. This is what my twins 11 are getting.
Plus they can have photo albums on it.

Thanks for this post! Dd is asking for a Ninetendo DS but when we saw the DSi we wondered how long til regular DS is obsolete. The touch might be a good alternative for her.

Thank you once again for all the input. I have been sitting on the fence with this one for awhile but with Christmas coming I know Santa will have to know soon which one to leave under the tree. I know I like the DSi for the camera and the different effects you can do with them, but truly, how long will that feature keep her playing with it? On my iPhone, I do have an app you can "draw" on photos so that might be enough with the photos she can download on it. Technology moves so quickly now it is hard to know what is the best to buy. It is like in the days of beta and VHS and it was a bummer for the families left with a beta machine. I truly am leaning towards an iTouch. The more everyone talks it up and with how much more it is than only a gaming system it seems like the way to go.

Thanks,

Update:

DH had a long chat with DD and she insists on a Hot Pink Nintendo DSi. I found an excellent deal for us and have decided on that, I just hope she will be happy Christmas morning.

With all of your input which I greatly appreciate, we are thinking of an iTouch for DS as through my employment I can obtain a decent discount on one. I have concerns but DH thinks it might be time for DS to learn how to take care of a game system of his own. As well, I am looking for something small as how many more toys does he truly need?

Thanks to all that have given their thoughts and suggestions.

Oh my, what a lucky 10 yr old your daughter is!

The only thing that's really bad about the DSi is that it can no longer play game boy advance games, but the Ds Lite can.

Lots of stores actually have deals where you can trade in your DS lite for a DSi at a much lower cost. You should go to your local game shop for details. There's no point in holding onto a DS lite if your daughter will have a DSi. This will also help those parents looking for a DS lite for their children! They'll be able to purchase a used one for a much lower price.

That is a great idea!! Unfortunately we do not live in a town large enough for one of those store.

Right now we are hanging on to her DS, as she has promised it to my mom when Santa gives her the new one. That way she can still have easy access to the games she still likes to play.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will now know what to do with the electronics my children grow out of.

I have both and honestly, I think she will be able to do a lot more with iTouch and as described, she already has a DS so the difference between the two, to her won't be a big deal.

I would definitely go for the iTouch.

Something that just came up to mind. Will be considering getting her a cell phone in the near future? Getting her a iPhone off the web would also be a good option. Has all the options of the iTouch but will allow you to get her a pay as you go cell phone card when you think she is ready to start having a cell phone. Cost wise, depending on which one you get will cost you the same or less. Just an idea.

I never did think to look for one off the web. We are not big buyers off the web (nothing against it, just not use to it as of yet). I didn't even know you could also have an iPhone as a pay as you go either. All good things to think about. Thank you.

You bet. In fact if you get a phone off the web(one that has no contract attached to it, which you will online find online), she can't use it as a phone except to make 911 calls.

Just thought it could be an idea to consider if you are going out of your way and spending a signicant amount of money on it. Maybe you know someone who can help you or make the online purchase if you choose to do so.

Good luck :)
