Nine Days of WDW Food for 9 (with pics) Now Complete w/ Final Thoughts

LOVE the restaurant choices you made! Your photos are mouth-watering! Those pizzas at Via Napoli are MONSTROUS but look delicious!

I'm ashamed to admit that while AKL is my favorite resort and we love Boma, we haven't yet made it over to try Sanaa. Reviews from Sanaa seem so overwhelmingly positive I swore to DH we'd eat there soon, and your review just cinched it. Talk about a great experience, wow!

Really sad to hear about Captain's Grille though. :sad2: We have a breakfast ADR there for September when we stay at BC. I've read three negative reviews for CG all in the last month or so...so I might have to change that one. Although I know as well as anyone that restaurants at Disney seem to have their "off" and "on" nights.

More reviews, more reviews! :worship:

great pics - nice to see a Kouzzina breakfast review as we are booked for the first time in October. Shame about your experience at Capt Grille though as we are booked there too.
I would recommend the buffet if you feel you must go there.:upsidedow

Words cannot describe...

I really like Boma, too! But, it's really time you give Sanaa a try! It is different than Boma but I would be shocked if you didn't like it...;)

The only reason we gave it a try is we were hungry and there it was! In retrospect, I would have gone to the other side of the Boardwalk to Kouzzina again.

More reviews, more reviews! :worship:
They're comin'!

So sorry you weren't impressed with the breakfasts on your trip. It sounds like you had some great meals otherwise though. I love how you are so enthusiastic about the food, it makes a lovely change having spent most of the afternoon reading a thread about how the food has gone downhill at WDW.

The only places I wasn't thrilled by this trip were two of the breakfast spots and Cosmic Ray's. Otherwise, Disney did NOT disappoint us!

Aw, I'm sad to hear about the à la carte experience at Captain's Grille - I thought all three of those first items (lemon-ricotta hotcakes, dark chocolate waffles, citrus-scented challah french toast) sounded great. :(

I know, I know! I had been eye-balling those menu items for some time and thought if we ever found ourselves in the area we would give it a try. Hmph! DS25 had lemon-ricotta pancakes on his honeymoon last fall and was excited to see them on the menu at WDW. He was pretty disappointed as they did not begin to compare to the ones he had in Boston. The chocolate in the chocolate waffles did not have the taste of "good" chocolate. It had a strange taste. YMMV...

Dinner at Kouzzina: DH, me and our two youngest boys had dinner there last year and were really looking forward to taking the rest of our crew back for dinner. We were seated quite a bit after our ADR time, but that is far more common with larger parties than smaller ones, so we roll with it.

1-IMG_0829.jpg

Three different dipping olive oils...each had a totally distinct flavor. We noticed Kouzzina offers some sort of an olive oil tasting and we were all discussing how we would LOVE to do that sometime...Take the time to really focus on the different flavors. You can distinguish some pronounced differences! Yes, those are high quality olives in the one section of oil!
1-IMG_0830.jpg

The delicious complimentary bread that tastes wonderful with the dipping oil...
1-IMG_0827.jpg

Saganaki – Flamed Greek Cheese with Lemon and Oregano...this was good. It is not flamed tableside. Good, though it was, we probably wouldn't order it again.
1-IMG_0826.jpg

Kouzzina Spreads – Choose from Greek Olive Tapenade, Chickpea Hummus, Eggplant Spread, Taramosalata, Whipped Feta with Peppers, or Tzatziki, served with Pita, Choice of Six...we really, really enjoyed these spreads! We would order them again. Of all the starters, though, I think I enjoyed the complimentary bread and olive oils the most!!
1-IMG_0831.jpg

Braised Short Ribs over Smoked Feta-Mashed Potatoes and Sautéed Brussels Sprouts with a Brown Butter Vinaigrette, Caper, and Cheese (the Brussels Sprouts were a substitution for other seasonal vegetables)...be still my heart:love::love: I LOVED my entree and side of brussel sprouts. It just melted in my mouth! Others who ordered the same totally agreed. I believe this dish was the clear winner at the table! YUM! I try not to eat a lot of mashed potatoes, but I could not stay away from the feta-flavored spuds! My oldest son has gone back home and tried to duplicate the Brussels Sprouts. None of us have ever been fans of this veggie but these were very delicious (I had read good things and decided to chance it)!
1-IMG_0835.jpg

Tasting size portions of Greek-style Lasagna, Char-grilled Lamb Burger, and Cinnamon-stewed Chicken with Orzo...this was the dish three of us ordered last year. A couple of people in our party ordered it this year and agreed with us that the lamb burger is the best thing on the plate, though the other items are tasty, too!
1-IMG_0836.jpg

-Cinnamon-stewed Chicken with Tomatoes, over Herbed Orzo Pasta, topped with Greek Cheese with a side of Brussels Sprouts...I don't remember who ordered this, but I remember someone saying they enjoyed it. As part of the trio pictured above, I remember this being tasty but not something I would order again as it does not compare with my short ribs or even the lamb burger (but that's just my opinion and that of DH).
1-IMG_0833.jpg

Traditional Whole Fish – Pan-roasted with Braised Greens, Greek Olives, Fennel, and Smoked Chili...before the deboning
1-IMG_0834.jpg

Kouzzina Traditional Fish being deboned...
1-IMG_0837.jpg

the skeletal remains of the Traditional Whole Fish after deboning...
Straight from DH: "A little mushy, a little soft, a little dangerous (lots of bones even after deboning), good flavor, but CERTAINLY NOT worth the money!" I think that fish was in the ballpark of $43! It should have been staggeringly good! Two of my sons also ordered this dish and completely agreed with DH!
1-IMG_0824.jpg

Several cappuccinos were ordered. DH thought it was pretty good. Others said it was average.
1-IMG_0838.jpg

Galaktobouriko
Semolina Custard in Baked Phyllo Dough served with Greek Spoon Sweets..I ordered a different version of this last year and thought it was pretty good. DS14 ordered it (he was the only one with room for dessert) and he truly loved it!
Overall, we had a great meal at Kouzzina, good service, too! We would not hesitate to return knowing we would be able to find some really great food!

Great reviews so far! I'm a little sad your breakfasts were disappointing, we usually love our Disney World breakfasts. I'm looking forward to more of your reviews.

Thanks for the compliment on the reviews! Kona breakfast really bummed us as we have never, ever had a bad breakfast there. We would never have expected Kona to "miss it" on breakfast. They've always seemed to have it down to a science!:confused3

It sounds as thought Kouzzina didn't really 'wow' you this time. It is one place we have never seriously considered since there are few menu items that appeal to us.

Hmmm...I didn't intend to leave the impression that the meal didn't wow us. To some degree, it did! There were certainly individual items that didn't "blow us away". But nothing, I mean nothing was bad in any way! There were many items, that were just staggeringly good (my short rib and potatoes, the bread and oil, the lamb burger, etc. ! Was the meal perfect? No! But it did "wow" us in many respects and we will return!

Haven't been to Kouzzina dinner since opening night in 2009, but I remember really enjoying the fisherman's stew there. Now I'm hoping to return there eventually. :)

I'm so sad that your breakfasts have been disappointing! I love to eat breakfast on vacation and I don't want to be let down.

I'm curious about Kouzzina, it's perhaps a little too adventurous for me but I'd love to try the platter with the lamb burger. I'm a huge fan of lamb and I never get to eat it because neither my Dad. nor my boyfriend like it!

I have heard great things about that stew, but will never try it as I am allergic to shellfish. :sad1:

I think the lamb burger would be perfect for you as I don't think it would take an adventurous palate to enjoy it, at all! I wonder if anyone has tried ordering just a large lamb burger instead of the trio where you only receive a small lamb burger plus two other small entrees? If they would make just a large burger for you I think you would really like it!

And now, for your vicarious dining pleasure, the reviewer (that's me, Belle5 :lmao:)proudly presents: Artist Point! We were seated in the main dining area near the windows, but not up against. Last time we dined here, there were fewer of us, so we were given a primo spot at a ROUND table (which by now you know I love:love:) up against the window. This time AP was so crowded when we arrived (DonaldDole Whip's reviews are making a difference, I'm convinced) we were fortunate to be seated anywhere, though I did request not to be seated in the first area as you walk in, as we have been seated there once and did appreciate feeling like we were on display (I have hang-ups about that...I like my privacy)! We were seated at a long table. This was the night we were celbrating DS24's birthday.

1-IMG_0900.jpg

I know that the decor at AP or even WL is not to everyone's taste, but we love it!
1-IMG_0869.jpg

Each of us was brought an Amuse Bouche of Smokey Portobello Soup
with Roasted Shiitakes, Chive Oil, and Sourdough Croutons. Now, one of the reasons I was wanting to return to AP was to drown myself in this soup. The word "soup" is really too lowly a word for this glorious concoction. Bringing it for each person to sample was brilliant, as about half the table ended up ordering the Portobello Soup as their appetizer!

To our great surprise, another Amuse Bouche was brought to the table! Unfortunately, our photo turned out blurry and I can't find a description of it anywhere! If I remember correctly, it was some kind of a fresh, hot corn chip like you would have in a Mexican restaurant and there was tuna tartare on it and a spicy slaw or sauce. Anyway, those at the table who enjoy tuna tartare really enjoyed this bite! This is the item that DS25 says was one of the most amazing things he's ever tasted!

1-IMG_0873.jpg

1-IMG_0874.jpg

The delicious bread, butter and dipping oil that is brought to the table.

Appetizers:
1-IMG_0876.jpg

I could not remember what this was, but jabead produced a menu for me. Now I know it was Huckleberry Lacquered Pork Belly with Green Papaya Slaw, Athena Melon and Lotus Root Chip! DS25 says it was a bit of a disappointment...too fatty!

1-IMG_0878.jpg

Grilled Delta Asparagus with Parmesan Cheese, Apples,
and Brown Butter Vinaigrette
This was very tasty! DH ordered it and I sampled freely!

1-IMG_0879.jpg

Salt-Roasted Heirloom Beets
with Truffled Chèvre, Cider-poached Pink Lady Apples, Spiced Walnuts, and Mulled Wine Vinaigrette. This was the low-point in the meal for me but it was ENTIRELY my own fault! Truffled Chèvre is goat cheese. I didn't know that or I would not have ordered this. I loathe goat cheese! I scraped off the Truffled Chèvre and gave it away to those at the table who love it. I think I was hoping for a lot more "beet" as I love them, but this seemed to be a little, delicate, lacy work of art that was quite a bit about the cheese and not the beets. If you LOVE goat cheese, I think you will like this. My intention had been to order the Portobello Soup, but had quite a bit when we were first seated (my DS8 didn't care for his so he donated to me:love:). I felt that since I had already had a small "fix" I should use this as an opportunity to sample another appetizer!

1-IMG_0877.jpg

The clear winner in the appetizer category...The Smokey Portobello Soup
with Roasted Shiitakes, Chive Oil, and Sourdough Croutons. DS25 has told me if there is one food item from the entire trip he craves it is that soup! Yes, it's THAT good!

Entrees:
1-IMG_0882.jpg

Seared Diver Scallops with Herb Spring Pea Risotto and Chardonnay Saffron Beurre Blanc. DIL ordered these and loved them! However, after tasting the entrees of others at the table, she felt that her meal may have been the "weakest".

1-IMG_0880.jpg

Roasted Buffalo Tenderloin with Okinawa Purple Potato Purée, Hazelnut Cauliflower Polonaise, Onion Marmalade, and Blackberry Pinot Noir Reduction. I think all the male members of our party ordered this buffalo and they were in no way disappointed. The were moaning and oohing and aahing with every bite! It is served pretty rare (medium-rare maybe), so one of my son's needed to send his back for further cooking. Then, it was just perfect for him, as well!

1-IMG_0881.jpg

Crispy Buttermilk-dipped Airline Chicken - with Herb Spaetzle, Fava Beans, Bacon Jam, and Natural Chicken Jus. This was my entree. I know you have heard about my men grunting like cavemen over their buffalo, but folks...I WON! I loved my entree! I passed my humble little chicken dish around the table and most of the guys had to admit that as fantastic as their buffalo dishes tasted, mom's chicken was the best thing on the table! I cannot begin to tell you how the flavors worked together in this dish! Those little green things that almost look like lima beans are actually Herb Spaetzle (little German dumplings). Ohhhhhhhhhh they were so good! Crave some now, want some now....can't wait to have them again! How long will they be on the menu???? One can never tell! Was it the bacon jam that made everything taste so good? I don't know. I just want more! Am I saying you will be blown away by this dish? No! I just know it worked perfectly for my tastes and my family was equally impressed.

Dessert:
1-IMG_0883.jpg

The AP cappuccinos were voted a close second to the ones from Via Napoli. Remember, I think cappuccinos were ordered at all TS restaurants (and other carts and QS, as well) just so they could be compared!

1-IMG_0895.jpg

DIL each ordered ourselves a pot of Eros (kind of an orange/vanilla flavor) tea in a French press. It was as good as usual!

1-IMG_0892.jpg

Artist Point Berry Cobbler--Seasonal berries and housemade ice cream. This was, once again, my dessert and it paired beautifully with the Eros tea. I really enjoyed it!

1-IMG_0886.jpg

Warm Chocolate Cake . . . Warm Valrhona Chocolate with Grand Marnier Chantilly and Berry Seltzer. DH ordered this and said the cake part was a typical lava cake but the spread with the berries and the liquid selzer in the cup worked together to make it a very delicious dessert.

1-IMG_0888.jpg

Local Orange Blossom Lace Cannoli with Mountain Berry Mousse,White Chocolate Anglaise, Strawberry-Rhubarb Jam,and Micro Basil
I remember that my oldest son enjoyed this and my DS14 thought his was "awesome".

1-IMG_0889.jpg

Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée with Chocolate-Hazelnut Biscotto. I didn't order this as we make amazing Crème Brûlée right here at home. I chided my DS22 for ordering it reminding him that he makes the best Crème Brûlée, so why would he waste this opportunity to try something different? He ordered it anyway, and we were all pea-green with envy! That was the best dessert on the table!!!

1-IMG_0891.jpg

DS8 ordered the White Chocolate Mickey Puzzle and a Cookie (again) and had fun painting it and eating it. He says to tell you it was his favorite dessert in WDW! ;)

So, Artist Point served us the best meal of our trip. But, for the cost--it should have been!!! The service at AP was my very favorite kind: the server was polite and always there, but at the same time very much in the background. He didn't think we were there to begin a new relationship with him...he understood we were dropping a fortune to have special time with our family! For this cost and environment, the service was perfect!

Wow, AP looks amazing. I really love the sound of your chicken dish although I admit it looks a little unappetising. My DS (9) would love that Mickey puzzle and cookies.

Yes! Sometimes I worry that it's just me who's so impressed by Artist Point, but your review helped convince me otherwise. Isn't it amazing what they can do with a chicken dish? The bacon jam is such a great touch. And I have to say, I don't like goat cheese but I still loved that truffled chèvre - it must be due to the magic pull that Artist Point has on me.

The buffalo sounds perfect - I can only imagine how that blackberry pinot noir reduction paired with it. And thanks for posting a pic of the cannoli - I've been considering trying it, as I love the idea of filling a cannoli with berry mousse (and the idea of flavoring the shell with orange blossom, and the idea of serving it with a strawberry-rhubarb jam - that dish is full of great ideas :lmao:). Overall, you have me more excited than ever about returning to AP soon, and that's saying something. :thumbsup2

Ha! I agree that my chicken dish isn't the most visually appealing! I am not sure what they could do to give the color a boost....the dish just looks a little grey/green and yellow! But, if you can look past the cover on the book...there's a treasure inside!

I'm sure your son would love painting with the colored chocolate and then eating his creation!

Keep cheering for AP! I think people are hearing you! You inspired me to try some different items this time and I am glad I did! If you don't like goat cheese, though, I think someone must have sprinkled pixie-dust:wizard: in your beet appetizer to help you like it...but they forgot to do it to mine!

All of your food at Artist Point looks delicious! I love the soup and that Orange Blossom Cannoli looks like something I must try! Thanks for the great photos!
