Is this a good format to use and if so what are the advantages?
I have looked at a photoshop editing demo which shows that NEF is really good but is the + Jpeg Basic worth shooting or should I just stick to NEF ???

I have a D50 and only shoot JPEG. Auto white balance is very good and out of camera shots are also very good, usually only needing minor tweeking if anything. I don't have Nikon Capture anyway and I'm not really big on a lot of post processing work. JPEG Fine works great for my needs.

On my Canon 20D I shoot 100% RAW(CR2), I would not shoot both. With the NEF files and free software you can convert all of them to JPEG in a matter of minutes(depending ON pc speed) and still have the original digital negative to use if you ever feel the need to fine tune an image.

Unless the lighting is very complicated, I only use JPEG Large Fine on my Canon 30D and 5D. Both for personal and pro usage.

This is the same for me .. except for the pro part (I haven't dabbled with that since the early 80's) and there is of course the fact that I don't have a lens named after me :teeth: ...oh yeah and I only have a 20D

i've said it before a few times :) - i shoot raw for everything except sports. that lets me quickly print the sport shots as well as store the thousands of shots every weekend.

i shoot RAW for everything else for the added dynamic range, white balance, lack of pre-processing, and Adobe colour space.

you can shoot NEF + jpg where you think you will generally use the jpgs, but then have a raw image to fall back on in case you need to extract detail or change white balance, etc.

Thanks I think \i'll try a few RAW and see how it goes.

When shooting RAW & JPG mode on a Nikon it will slow your processor down. If you normally set up your photo's and shoot, you'll never notice. But if you do sports or concert photography, you will.

I've taken a few in RAW without using the +jpeg and I'm amazed at how much better the quality of the shots are. yes I can see it would be to slow for sports and concert but for outdoor scenes it's the best.

The colours are much more washed out it the pictures I shot in Jpeg from the same place.

JPG is 8 bits, RAW is 12 bits, that's 16 times more information in the image.

To me ,the reasons to use JPG (less memory space, faster) are becoming less of an issue with faster processors in the camera and less expensive memory cards.
For sports and concerts I can see there is still an issue, for most other photography you will be doing yourself (and your images) a favor by using RAW.

If you have the memory card space, use JPG and RAW so you ahve a quick iage to email and a better one to work with later.
