Help! DH wants a DSLR for his birthday (anticipating retirement hobby!) and I can't decide (mostly 'cuz I am clueless about cameras).
My current choices are:
Nikon D3000 with an 18-55 optical zoom for $450, or
Nikon D3100 for $510 and purchase a 55-200 zoom lens for $179Which would be most useful and be "more bang for the buck"!
Appreciate any advice!:yay:

I could be wrong (and I am very new to dslr), but I think the d3100 is the new model of the d3000. I have the d3000 and like it, but I think the d3100 has video capabilities too? Here is a site that compares them

If you don't care about the features that are slightly different then the d3000 will end up being a better deal because the price is dropped due to the new model. And I know some places have the d3000, kit lens, 55-200mm lens, and a bag as a bundle for a pretty good price.

Do you know that he is interested in these cameras? It is such a personal decision, I would never buy one without knowing what was wanted. Just for example, the cameras you listed are on the small side of DSLRs. If he has really large hands this might be uncomfortable. There are many other things to consider as well, such as does he have friends that would loan him lenses? If so, what brand do they use? Etc. Etc. Basically, if you are not sure then I would suggest something like a gift certificate to B&H or Adorama instead.
