Take a few shots when you first get to the bowling alley to see what WB setting gets the best results. Even try the daylight setting (sometimes that will work because there are so many different types of light bulbs these days). If none of the settings you try works then do a preset WB. You can set it with just a sheet of plain white paper not a gray card. I just learned this this week in a course I am taking for the D300. Here are the steps we were taught to set your WB for mixed or difficult lighting.
1.Select the PRE white balance setting.
2.Use a bright white (not glossy) sheet of paper. Not a gray card. Gray cards are for getting a good exposure. This is to get an accurate white balance. Place the white sheet of paper over your subject in the same light as the subject will be photographed.
3.Fill the metering area with the white paper. Dont worry about focusing as the white color is all thats important. Auto focus wont work because it wont know where to focus on a clear white sheet of paper.
4.Hold down the WB balance button on the release mode dial located on the top left area of the camera until PRE begins to flash on the top control panel, then point the camera to fill the metering area with all white.
5.Press the shutter release to set your white balance. If the you get a "Good" message, recompose and take your picture. The color should be accurate, even in mixed lighting. If you get a "no Gd" message, the target is too dark or too bright and youll need to make adjustments, like diffusing the light or moving the subject to a brighter area.
The procedure for the D80 should be similar to the above steps. I have a D300 and D40 and the steps are the same except for step number 4 in getting to the menu area that allows you preset a WB setting.
hope this helps a little
