Nikon D80

Hey y'all! I finally made a decision to get a Nikon d80 after doing lots more research and bothering y'all here on the boards with endless questions about which camera to get!

Now, where would you purchase this camera from and what lens/es would you purchase?? I'm just looking for the basics to learn with now and hopefully Santa will bring me some accessories and such for Christmas. I'm leaning towards the VR lenses as I don't want to get blurry pictures and can't always rely on myself to be stable.

Have you checked B&H Photo? $999 w/18-135mm lens.

If your going with the D80 & 18-55 VR lens, then I'd go with amazon or Ritz.

You might not need the VR lens why dont you go to a shop and check out regular lens and see how it does while deciding. Since you are just checking the lens shake you could use just about any of the Nikon bodies, you might be surprised how you do.

If you dont limit yourself to VR lenses you open up a whole lot more options and prices.

The 18-135mm lens is a great one to start with. Thats what I would get. Then if you need something longer the 70-300mm vr gets really good reviews.
I have an 18-125mm on my D50. Its on there most of the time. Very useful.

How do you have the file sequencing in camera? If you set it File No. Seq. to on then in camera it will keep giving you a different number.

Now, with PP, when you go to export the images as JPEG's to your folder it wil ask you if you want to change the file name. It defaults to checking the box to change file names. You have to uncheck it. It also defaults to Resizing the picture to Large PC Screen. If you keep this, the file size will shrink down from around 5MB to less than 1MB.

If it comes across another picture with the same file name it automatically adds the -1 to the end of the file name of the current image being exported.

Another option is to go under Tools then click on Rename Photos and make sure the box next to Rename Photos During import is NOT checked.

I have another question. I just rolled over the 10k picture mark. This is the 2nd time. The first time it was doing the DSC_001_01 thing above. This time, numbering started all over again at 001. Is this how it's supposed to be? I do have file number sequencing on in camera and I double checked all the above. Is it supposed to go back to 001?

ETA: If it's normal, how do you keep track of how many times it's gone over 10k pictures?
ETA again: Sorry, brain fart! The first time it did the DSC_001_01 was when it would go over 1000 pictures. Now when I go over 10k it starts again at 001. So is this normal, and how do you know how many times you've gone over 10,000 photos?

You can check a recent image with Opand EXIF Viewer- the D80 records total shutter actuations on each file.

I just checked my Exif info and my actual photo count is 4k higher than I thought it would be. It must've rolled over several times before Handicap18 helped me figure out how to change it.

I am at around 15,500 images. My D50 also only has a 4 digit number so once I get to 9999, the next image is also 0001. So what I started doing is renumbering the images when I transfer them from the memory card to the computer.

I use Picture Project for this (I've found it to be the easiest thus far). Before I transfer I go under options, then Rename Photos. In the middle it will have a box that says Start numbering at:_________

From here I start that numbering based on the first image that needs to be transferred. So if the next image that I'm putting on the computer is 5432, I start the numbering at 15432. (once I get over 20,000 then I'll make it 25432)

The only problem with this is that if you had deleted images while shooting you'll miss a few numbers. The images in the camera may go from 5431, then 5434 (you deleted 5432 & 5433). When you rename, it keeps the numbers in sequential order. So the last time I transferred it may have ended with 5429, but the very next image I take could be 5435 (if I deleted 6 images). By renaming my images each time I'll be able to keep with the file sequence pretty much on target with what the actual shutter clicks are.

Every now and the I'll go over to opanda and check the shutter clicks and try to keep my numbering updated to that number.

I hope this isn't to much and you can understand what I'm saying. I did kind of babble. You can PM me if you need more specific info.

I was in a similar spot at one point last year (Not quite that much, but about 800 or so).

So what I did was I started renaming starting with the ACUTAL photo count based on what opanda said it was. Since then I've been pretty close.

Either that or not worry about the 4,000 count difference, but just know what that difference is for your own personal knowledge.
