So I am in a photography class every Wednesday night and was out taking pictures today. All went well with my Nikon D3100 camera until 20 minutes into taking pictures. I got like 30 photos before it just turned BLACK. every picture and the viewer see's total black and I"m not sure why.

any help?

Check for advice on thephotoforum.com - it's a busy site and there is always someone willing to offer advice (or a critique).

i made a video of the problem and stuck it on youtube so hopefully someone can help. I called Nikon and asked but they can't give me an estimate and won't pay for me to ship back and forth. here's the youtube link.

Take the lens off, set the camera on manual and select a long exposure. Look into the mirror box and release the shutter. Does the mirror function properly (the mirror "slap" in your video sounds OK)? Does the shutter open to expose the sensor, and does it then close?

It turns out that the motor went in the camera. It would cost me $206 - $225 to repair and have to wait 4-6 weeks which demolish the point of taking the course because I won't have a camera, so we're looking into Factory refurbished at Walmart. I cringe at "refurbish"...

Bummer... I wouldn't worry about a "refurb". I love buying them. BIG money savers and I've never had any issues. They usually come with a 30-day warranty and in most cases, if something is going to go wrong, it'll happen quickly or after a long time.

Cameta Camera is a great dealer located not far from Nikon USA's HQ and they get a ton of refurb'ed stuff straight from Nikon.

Thanks. I found the same camera for a great price. Pretty much what walmart wanted for the body but the one I bought comes with the body and the lens. :) I'm just upset because of the camera breaking the first week into the class and that I customized the camera with Mickey stickers on the shell.

Another vote for getting refurb since you can really maximize your cash that way. Try places like Cameta Camera, they offer manufacturer refurb's w/ a 1 year warranty included in the price.
