Nice surprise!

Last month I decided to try to find out more about my maternal lineage, we've been building our family tree for a couple of years and got to a dead end. So after doing a bit of web browsing we decided that the next step to take was a maternal DNA test I ordered the kit which didn't take long to arrive and did the swabs and posted them back a month ago. Well this morning I got my results back and got a nice surprise...somehow my results came back as being from a group which had it's European origins in Sweden and Poland!! Now that's something to think about for a while but the site also told me of some other members who were closely matched to my DNA too. It's going to be an interesting time figuring out if or how we could be related. I guess next time we go to EPCOT I need to go to Sweden

It's fascinating stuff, isn't it? The DNA swab sounds brilliant! When I was laid up with a bad back a while ago, I got into the whole family tree thing. I discovered my maternal line were Eastern European Jews and that my paternal line stems from St. Lucia....

I can trace my family back to Russia.

It basically means that my maternal line goes right back to a Swedish Viking woman. She probably crossed the Atlantic with her family some time around the 9th century AD. Actually it figures that's why I have a fascination with history, jewellery, family, stories and cultures. It also explains my temperament

Not all Swedish Vikings came over to Britain lots of the headed east to Russia and Constantinople and some even made it to the Middle East.

DH is going to have his test done, next month, too. It will be interesting to see what the result will be

I used www.ancestry.co.uk there's a link on the main page about DNA at the top of the screen right hand corner. They were very good, the price was about £100. They sent a kit after I filled in the online request. It arrived about 1 week later and it was easy to do. Once the samples had been taken I posted them back by Airsure, it took ten working days to go from me to Salt Lake City in Utah USA. Found out where it was on the USPS online site so I knew when it reached the lab. It then took 15 working days for them to do their work and email me that my results were done and ready to view online!
In less than 12 hours they emailed me again to tell me they had found DNA matches and allowed me to compare my results with others. I've since been in contact with some of them through the site to find out more. I'm waiting to see if any of them reply. Other sites also offer a similar service but prices vary.

They tell you about the origins of your haplogroup and when they left Africa and how they migrated and where they settled. Each group developed it's own unique DNA signature that's how they work out which ones are which. They put it all on a map along with your own results.

I did a bit of timeline research to find out when they joined the population here, it seems that about 1100-1200 years ago they came over with the Vikings and they had Norman links too. Those who didn't migrate west went east to Russia and Italy and the Middle East. I think that's when the subgroups developed.
It's all fascinating stuff
