nice, cheap hotel outside of Universal

I was wondering if anyone would know of a nice, cheaper hotel outside of Universal. Our relatives are not sure they want to spend the $229 Royal Pacific is asking. Anyone know of a good reputable hotel in which they've had a good experience? Thanks for your help.

Mary, there are lots of good, some brand new, hotels on Major Blvd. Do a search on Kirkman Ave, Major Blvd and Vineland Rd, even International Blvd has some good ones.

I've stayed at:

Hampton Inn Universal (good rate on Hotel Kingdom, nice with fridge and microwaves)
Red Roof Inn (One night when it was brand new, very basic)
Suburban Suites (one of the first to stay there, mini suites with low weekly rates)
Holiday Inn Universal (also off Hotel Kingdom, one bed suite roomy and nice)
Holiday Inn I Drive (avoid... ugh)
and a few more that slip my mind!

I can't emphasize how important the FOTL access is with the onsite properties, though. Even if you stay ONE night you get two days of FOTL, that alone justifies the price IF you're going on a particularly busy time of year, which is all of the time with me because I can only go when my son (and the rest of the world ) I have gone the cheaper route but lived to regret it.

We stayed at the Peabody for only $79 a night (yes the peabody)

We got the rate through priceline however I saw it also on a few other hotel search sites labeled as 5 star mystery hotel (you can tell it's the peabody because they mention 17 story and the year it was built)

The beds there were so comfy I want one at home now.
