Our friends live in Oak Park. Great Schools, really nice older homes, very good transportation options. They have 4 children and love it. Their home was pricey but I've visited them and I love their neighborhood!
We need to know what area your husband will be working in. After that we can give a recommendation.
In Chicago, you can't just live wherever you want because it could take you 2 hours one way to get from the North Suburbs to the South Suburbs - on a good day. You need to focus your search in the area where your DH will work.
I spent April-August of 2005 on a contract in Chicago. My office was at the AON center downtown and I took a 5 month lease on an apartment in Bensenville.
The commute was about an hour each way (1 mile drive to the train, 45 min train ride give or take, 10 min walk from Union Station to the Aon building.)
I loved the area and the wife and I strongly considered moving there permanently but eventually decided against it.
Hi there! You have lots of great choices in Chicagoland....like other posters said, if the job is downtown, make sure you are on a Metra line...especially from the Western burbs. My husband takes the train everyday and swears he would not go downtown if he had to drive.
As far as western burbs.....I have lived in Batavia, Naperville and currently Oswego. All great, all good schools. Oswego is still growing, so there is new construction of homes going on if that interests you. Naperville also has some new construction still, but it is not cheap! Good luck in your search! You are moving to a great city!! Feel free to PM me if you want any more info about the western burbs.
Naperville schools are good, but they are not the best. My brother lives in Naperville....very expensive...and taxes are higher there than they are here in Orland Park.
The village of Naperville has two school district Indian Prairie 204 (part of Bolingbrook and Aurora are in 204) and Community School Dist 203 (mostly the older portion of Naperville but also a very small part of Bolingbrook is in this district)
I don't think that they are the best, but they are up there. But with that, comes the higher taxes as well.
