Niagara Falls, Ontario

I waited too long to exchange my currency. Went to the bank yesterday and it turns out they have to order Canadian currency in. Dumb me! :upsidedow Oh well, I noticed that there is a currency exchange right after crossing the bridge in Sarnia. It says it has no fees and pays $1.25 per $1 USD. I don't know if we should bother stopping there or not. We are spending the first few days of our vacation near the National Park on Bruce Peninsula, so seems we might need Canadian bills some.

Are you riding the these rides at Clifton Hill? I had written that off, thinking it was too tourist trap like, but our teen kids would love some 4D Rides--I'm not even sure what a 6D ride is? I asked my daughter and she thought with that many "Ds" that you are on an actual rollercoaster.

Thanks for the info. I think we would all enjoy this, but I'm not sure we want to do all the fun pass activities. I wish we could share a couple of passes so my husband and I could play mini golf while kids rode the ferris wheel thing.
One place I read said there were lots of 3D, 4D, and 5D rides there?

Also, do you happen to know if they charge for parking at Clifton Hill? Their parking links has a lot of information but nothing about cost?

I don't know about cost of parking since we parked in the fallsview casino.

We were just in the Clifton Hill area of Niagara over the Canada Day weekend. Parking fees varied by day and even time of day from $5.00 - $20.00. We parked about 10:00 a.m. and paid $10.00. By the time we left, the lot we were in was charging $15 or $20.

The parking lots only took cash, too, so you would want to have C$ with you for that. As Canadians, it wasn't an issue for us, but I didn't see any notices indicating that they accepted US$. I'm sure they would accept it, but it would probably be at par since the parking lot attendants are just walking around the lots without access to cash registers.

We leave tomorrow morning for our trip. Thanks to everyone who has given advice here, it's been very helpful.
And thanks @Ngwira for starting this thread. I hope you have a great trip on the Dream--we were onboard at this time in 2014. It's a beautiful ship. :cloud9:

Have fun! I think I am the last one here who hadn't gone yet....we don't leave for a couple more weeks.

I am still in the planning stage also! Don't leave for another 3 weeks. Please keep posting. I love reading other peoples reviews.

Have a great time and report back, please.

Drove through the main drag of Clifton Hills and I woukd say it's not worth visiting. I suppose if you want touristy crap it's fine. We were there to see the falls not play in arcades, cheesy museums, or other tourist traps. I had mt two teens (13 & 14), one who is a video game player and we don't feel we missed out on anything. Actually it was a very nice family vacation.

Not wanting to be in a tourist trap area reminds me of when my boys (22, 24, & 14) drove through Pigeon Forge when they were visiting their grandpa and told me they couldn't get out of there fast enough. They said "mom, is so much worse than Orlando. The entire town is tourist trap!" I had pre-booked them zip-lining in the mountains that the GPS took them through PF. My dad had moved ti Oak Ridge a few months prior so it was their first time visiting that area.

That is one reason that we decided to stay in Niagara on the Lake instead of right by the falls. We used to go to the beach every year and did the arcade there; we've been to Disney and Universal and those are our theme park vacations. We're going to do the cruise, the walk behind the falls and that kind of stuff near the falls because that's what we are going for. We also got tickets to a play in Niagara on the Lake. We're going to be continuing on to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal so there will be plenty of museums there.

We rolled into our driveway at midnight last night. Had a great trip to Ontario and Niagara Falls. Here is my mini trip report and post-trip thoughts:

Bridge into Canada at Sarnia was easy and quick to cross. We stayed overnight in Sarnia and they have a beautiful riverfront walk where Lake Huron meets the St. Clair River.

Our next stop was the Bruce Peninsula. We went to the very tip to Tobermory. It's a long way but worth the drive. We stayed at a cottage here for a couple of nights and just loved it. On one side is Lake Huron and on the other is Georgian Bay (the "6th great lake"). The waters in both are clear and cold. It's gorgeous and I would have stayed here longer if I could.

Then we drove through Ontario to the Niagara region. We loved this drive which was basically a chain of small English-inspired towns separated by picturesque countryside. The roads are dotted with flower stands and all sorts of growing things.

Then it was Niagara Falls. We stayed in St. Catharine's which was about a 20 minute drive from the falls. We got our room free on points so it was worth the drive to us. Our first view of the falls was awe-inspiring.

IMG_3465.jpg

We had pre-bought our Adventure passes from Sam's Club so we went to the visitor's center at Table Rock and exchanged them for our lanyards and passes. Since we arrived around 5 p.m., a parks employee scheduled our four activities for the next day and spaced them out so we could manage it all.
We spent time admiring the view and then hopped on WEGO to head to Clifton Hill for dinner. After dinner we hopped the bus again hoping to go back to Table Rock. The bus driver said we would eventually get back there. We didn't mind sitting for a while as we were trying to kill time while we waited for the fireworks. We were on the bus about 45 minutes and saw a lot of the town--the good, the bad and the ugly.
Back to the falls for the fireworks.

My thoughts:
Buy Adventure passes ahead of time; the visitor's center is crazy busy and congested with people.
Clifton Hill: Awful place. We all felt the same way and couldn't wait to get out of there. My husband said it was more Vegas than Vegas.
The food at Boston Pizza was way overpriced and just mediocre. We had an excellent meal at Boston Pizza in Sarnia so we had high hopes for this location.
Fireworks: if you are already nearby then watch them but we went out of our way to stay in town for a couple of extra hours to see the fireworks. It was not worth it to us. They are about five minutes long and you'll probably see better fireworks at any small town in America on July 4th.

Niagara's Fury is probably more fun if you have small children. Our kids (21 and 15) were "meh". They did notice it's like the Canada attraction at Epcot--you have to stand through the whole thing. :D I thought it was cute but my husband thought Disney could have done it better.
Journey Behind the Falls is really cool. We loved this attraction.
White Water Walk was very neat. It took a long time to get down to the riverside because they only operate one elevator at a time. But it's a beautiful thing to see.
Hornblower Cruise: Loved this too. Everyone's favorite thing we did at Niagara.

We had all four events in one day and it was a lot. We were hot and tired by the end of the day. I wish we had spread them out over two days because we also wanted to walk up river. The kids were too tired to walk across the Rainbow bridge. We did drive across it the next day on our way home.

We left Niagara and drove to Niagara On The Lake. Wow, such a beautiful, charming town! We wanted to get some dinner but after being hot, sweaty and drenched on the Hornblower we felt we were not presentable for any of the NOTL restaurants. The kids thought the town looked pretentious and geared to "old people" but my husband and I ("old people" :teeth: ) are interested in going back someday.

Ontario in general: Beautiful, lovely land with mostly kind, friendly people. I loved driving through the countryside from town to town. Of course, it's just a personal preference but I enjoyed everything having to do with nature and the land, but was dismayed by loud, cluttered, expensive, snake-oil-salesman quality of a lot of the falls area.

I would go back to Ontario and Niagara on the Lake anytime.

Thank you for your report. After reading, I am glad we decided to spend 2 days doing the adventure pass. DD14 wants time to make a video tape blog. Can't wait to leave in 2 weeks!!!

Thanks so much for your report. We are planning to do the same things as you in roughly the same time frame, although we will be staying in NY the night before we arrive, about two hours from the border so maybe can walk around a little that day too. We are staying at Niagara on the lake so will have dinner there before our play, will have time to change from travel clothes etc. My kids are 13 and 15 so I'll be interested to see if their reactions match your kids' about the attractions.

P.s. Do you have to have your pictures hosted somewhere to post them? I haven't posted pics on DIS for years.

I use Photobucket. I hope you love Niagara on the Lake. I'm sure my kids would have enjoyed it more if we had been there fresh in the morning instead of me insisting we see it at the end of a long day. There is a flower competition going on now so the whole place is bursting with color. :flower1:

@Narnia_girl thank you for the report. We leave next Thursday.

When you bought your passes from Sam's Club did you get them in store or online? I've been trying to find them on their website and haven't been able to.

I bought them online.
On the Sam's Club website, go to Shop By Department > Travel > Activities
That should give you a search box where you can type in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada
The Adventure Pass was on the second or third page of the listed activities. You specify if you want the classic pass or the nature one; and if you want bus transportation.
Upon completion you will have a voucher you can print out and take to the Ticket Desk at the Table Rock Visitor's Center. The gal who helped me there was a little confused at first but that's because Sam's has sold their travel services but she just checked with a manager and we were done in no time at all.
Have fun!

THANK YOU! I finally figured it out. My iPad was defaulting to the app instead of the regular website. Once I went to .com I found them.

I went to the aero car (next to Great Wolf Lodge ) and traded voucher for the Laynard. Much shorter line for sure. We did the Adventure Pass Plus.

As a frequent visitor to the falls since we live 2 hours away please make sure you visit Bird Kingdom near the falls. Well worth the money, especially the bat feedings. The other must do is the Robert Moses power plant on the American side,. Do not visit the Canadian power plant, it is dull and not worth the money.
