It is extremely cold, the water freezes over some, and it is again very cold. They used to do a huge festival of lights, but I haven't seen or heard about it in years. I guess you could hop from Casino on the US side to the Casino on the Canadian side if you really wanted to go.

In all honesty though, it is very pretty to see the ice and the way the water follows different paths. I would NOT come from another city to see it in the winter though, most attractions shut down.

Thank you!!!

Driving 12 hours then isn't worth it! :thumbsup2:rotfl:

I better find something else to do over Christmas :)

We are looking to get away for 3 nights or so -- having a bit of a dilemma in finding something worthwhile!

We were thinking Opryland/Nashville, but do not want to stay at the Gaylord ... Too pricey!

Groupon has some deals right now like Sheraton Music City Hotel with no blackout days at Christmas. $99.00 a night, 2 adults/2 children with Champagne and you can purchase up to 3 nights.

We did NYC at Christmas and loved it, cold and all. I would highly recommend looking at Groupon and LivingSocial and checking the blackout days.

Christmas in cape may nj or in colonial Williamsburg sounds nice to me...

:thumbsup2 I will have a look there...

We were thinking Williamsburg ... I found a nice hotel, Omni and Comfort or Country Inn and Suites, I have it written down somewhere, that looked very nice in the Newport News, VA area -- to see all the Christmas lights, etc.

We were thinking Busch Gardens too... I just want to be away, my daughter would like a swimming pool, she doesn't ask for much! LOL

I think it would be rather awesome to see in the winter even if things are limited. Maybe that would be a good chance at a relaxing vacation.

I was going to say I thought you decided on Williamsburg.

I am from upstate NY so I think it is pretty at that time. BUT what if there is now snow and you plan winter activities.

Thank you!!!

!

It shouldn't take you 12 hours to get there from Long Island it takes us 12 hours to get there from Va. 6 hours maybe?

They still do the Festival of lights. It's pretty much the whole month of Dec and then a week or so into January. New Years eve they always have live bands and fireworks and tons of people. There are a couple of indoor waterparks people like to go to. If you are there when there are no special events going on many places are closed. My parents went in January before and they said it was like a ghost town.

We often go down in December to see the lights. It is quite beautiful, and I rather like that it is less busy because I find the summer crowds quite annoying! Hotel prices are also very good at that time of year and there are a couple hotels with indoor waterparks too.

Lake Placid - breathtaking over Christmas. :thumbsup2 We have stayed at Mirror Lake and Whitface Lodge.

Sorry, I was right and wrong. In 2001 the US side stopped their Festival of Lights. It has been tried a few times since, but now it is sponsored in Canada. OP if you can go into Canada, IT IS DISNEY THEMED. Here is the link:

We do not have the enhanced license or passport, so we can't go on the Canadian side. After looking at the site, I would put it on your list if you can go to Canada.

The Omni isn't all that.

If your daughter wants a pool, consider Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg.

Colonial Williamsburg is beautiful around the holidays (Grand Illumination is scheduled for December 2). And Busch Gardens' Christmastown is also quite amazing.

They have a Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls too. I think it's too expensive though

I was there one winter with my DD on a skating team trip. It was amazingly beautiful - the mist coming off the falls froze and created huge hills of ice - it was gorgeous - literally one of the only beautiful winter sights I've ever seen (I tend to hate cold and snow :goodvibes). On the other hand, there probably isn't a lot of things to do in the winter, and things seemed a little "shut down."

I think the falls is prettiest in the winter. The parking is certainly better!

Between the light show, the casino, indoor waterpark, Niagara On The Lake shops, winery tours, maybe a day trip to Toronto to see the science centre or the hockey hall of fame you should be able to fill up 3 days.

pixiedust: Good luck with your trip wherever you go!
