Why are we seeing all these cuts right now, if the labor talks are still ongoing and there is still a legitimate chance a deal could be worked out? If the deal is worked out where the salary cap is *not* reduced, won't these teams feel a little stupid for cutting the players so soon? Why the rush to cut them?

The talks are for the 2007 season, the 2006 season already has it's cap set so these teams still need to get under the cap. The coaches/owners want to know what is going on for the 2007 season before the beginning of this season's free agency in the off-chance that the 2007 will be uncapped. Sorry, I just confused myself.

But the way ESPN reports it, these recent cuts are a result of teams worried they will be over the cap for *this* year as a result of the new lower cap. I don't get it.

There is a change in 2006 cap as well

it was projected to be arounf 116 mil but was dropped to around 97 mil...but then they stopped talks so all is on hold.

Yes they are working on a CBA for 2007 - 2008, but there is comfusion over what the cap will be for 2006

The players you see being cut are due hue slaraies and even huge bonuses that would all count towards the cap this year!

Okay then my question is, why is everyone saying "expect a MASSIVE number of cuts including some major players if this new cap takes place" ? Why wouldn't they wait till 2007 to cut them? Why cut them immediately after the new salary cap is put into place- one that you're saying wouldn't go into effect until 2007?

no the cap is for 2006

the cba (collective baegining agreement is for 2007 forward)

here is a little article to maybe help.

So what s happening is the teams knew this was coming, but some choose to ignore the facts in hopes the higher amount would ring true..well that didn;t happen...so it seems as of ight now.....so they are forced to get to that lower amount...BUT.....Free agency has been postponed so they do not need ot have cuts done today perse but the ones you see getting cut would have been cut ANYWAY regardless of high cap or not.

If the deal does not get done, there still is an agreement in place for the 2006 season. The cap free system would take place after that. Put he cap figure would be less (around 96M) so that is why the cuts are taking place now. Most of these cuts would have happened anyway because so many teams backload contracts and can't afford them or roster bonuses when this time of year rolls around.

Here are some of the highlights of how the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players' union would change in 2006 and 2007 if the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on an extension to the current contract.

From ESPN
2005
  • Salary cap: 65.5% of designated gross revenues
  • Unrestricted free agents: Must have four or more accrued seasons
  • Restricted free agents: Must have three accrued seasons
  • Franchise players: Each club may designate one
  • Transition players: Each club may designate one in lieu of a franchise player
  • Salary bonus proration: Maximum of five years
  • Unrestricted free agent signing restrictions: None
  • Benefits: Second career savings plan, supplemental disability, player annuity program, severance pay plan, tuition assistance plan
  • Minimum salaries: In effect

2006
  • Salary cap: 64.5% of designated gross revenues
  • Unrestricted free agents: Must have four or more accrued seasons
  • Restricted free agents: Must have three accrued seasons
  • Franchise players: Each club may designate one
  • Transition players: Each club may designate one in lieu of a franchise player
  • Salary bonus proration: Maximum of four years
  • Unrestricted free agent signing restrictions: None
  • Benefits: Second career savings plan, supplemental disability, player annuity program, severance pay plan, tuition assistance plan
  • Minimum salaries: In effect with increase of $5,000 over 2005

2007
  • Salary cap: None
  • Unrestricted free agents: Must have six or more accrued seasons
  • Restricted free agents: Must have three, four or five accrued seasons
  • Franchise players: Each club may designate one
  • Transition players: Each club may designate one in addition to a franchise player
  • Salary bonus proration: None
  • Unrestricted free agent signing restrictions: Final eight teams from 2006 have restricted ability to sign unrestricted free agents
  • Benefits: None (teams no longer contribute to second career savings plan, supplemental disability, player annuity program, severance pay plan, tuition assistance plan)
  • Minimum salaries: In effect; same as 2006

Most teams built their teams around a projected salary cap for next season and that cap may end up being a lot lower.

It's not that the cap is actually being lowered, it's that the cap isn't being raised as predicted.

The teams making these cuts have to make them for the upcoming season to be under the current, unraised, salary cap.

There will be a cap for the upcomming season - we just don't know what it will be. The cuts you are seeing now are ones the teams have decided need be made no matter what the cap will be.
