NFL is nuts

Does anyone else question TMZ's motives for their role in all of this? This happened in February - has worked through the court system - and NOW it's front and center?

Do they have an issue with the NFL? Just want more attention - yearning for prestige as a company of real journalists? Now TMZ is being quoted on/by major news sources. I think their value just went up.

TMZ has broken bigger stories than this. If I remember correctly they were the first to report Michael Jackson's death.

I want to know why didnt the court system, the nfl and the Ravens look into this, why were they all trying to cover for this guy, I could see why the Ravens might but the other two are confusing

The NFL has an image problem and situations like this are the reason why. I'm sure they were waiting to see if it might go away quietly, especially after the prosecution cut that deal with Rice, rather than kicking the hornet's nest themselves by being more proactive.

As far as the courts go... money talks. The prosecutor may not have wanted to face a high-profile trial against a big-name lawyer, or he may have felt that the victim would undermine the case since she stayed with Rice and went ahead with their marriage plans even after the incident. And let's face it, domestic violence is often little more than a slap on the wrist situation anyway. As a first time offender he'd likely only have gotten probation even if he was a working-class nobody.

The NFL and the Ravens didn't want an embarrassment on their hands. They did look into a bit, but preferred not to know all the details. They were probably hoping it would get swept under the rug and that people would quickly forget about the incident.

The Atlantic County, NJ court system could only do so much, especially since the fiancée/wife apparently forgave Rice and was reluctant/refused to pursue it any further. It was then a private matter between two consenting adults. And to be honest, domestic violence often isn't taken all that seriously by the legal system, no matter who the perpetrators and victims are.

I admit ignorance---

But wouldn't she have to want to press charges? If she declines, the. Could the authorities really do anything?

But here is the issue with that train of thought, when the Police come out to a domestic violence call, if one person has a mark on them charges are filed rather the other want to peruse it r not. and here not only did she have a mark on her, there was video of her being knocked out cold. I think someone being paid not to prosecute, this story had legs and before its over many people are going to loose there jobs. (on a side not, when she was out cold, he didnt seem a bit worried, i would have been scared to death that she might not be breathing or something) thats an act of a man who has done this often

It is hard to feel sorry for her as she married him, so for whatever reason, his fame and fortune are more important to her than her safety. If she doesn't care that he did this to her why should his employer?? just food for thought!

I think it's likely that she is as well.

Yes. Of course she is an abusive person as well. How can anyone dispute that? She hit him and spit on him. He then spit on her and hit her.

They are both domestic abusers. They are both pathetic.

I said likely because it wasn't clear to me exactly what she did in the elevator.

]Those of you who are wondering why she didn't leave him, should google "Why I Stayed". Obviously, each domestic abuse situation is different, but there is always a lot of "Why didn't she just leave?!" when we hear about domestic abuse. Things are never black and white. I think I read that in North Carolina there are significantly more shelters for animals than there are for battered women, and hundreds of battered women are turned away from shelters because they are full. If you have nowhere to go when you try to leave, it's hard to leave. This situation is different as there is affluence and fame, but I wanted to address the "why do women stay?"

$40 million is why she stayed.

There was a very good GMA segment yesterday about a woman starting #whyistayed on twitter. Maybe reading some of those reasons will make people think about why women stay.

I don't know why she stayed--but I don't believe it's because she's a gold digger or that it's just about the money. They've been together since they were young, way before his fame and the NFL.

Sure, the Atlantic City police came out and both were charged with something. Then it was turned over to the Atlantic County prosecutor. Yes, they had the video. They were willing to proceed, but there was still only so much they could reasonably do. If they compelled the fiancee/wife to testify, she likely would have said it was her fault, she provoked him and he was defending himself, etc. And then the defense would have repeated the same things. It was just too much of a gamble, so they likely went back and forth with plea arrangements until a deal was reached.

It's also quite possible that NFL and Rice's personal lawyers were able to persuade the prosecutor to tread lightly. "Look, this is a personal matter between Rice and the woman. She forgives him, says she was partially responsible, etc. Do you really want to spend all the time and money prosecuting something that's likely to fail? Just give him a slap on the wrist and be done with it. By the way, here's ten tickets in a luxury suite to this year's Super Bowl."

Here in NY where we have the NY Dog Killers (Jets) Michael Vick couldn't keep his mouth shut.

"This one is tough," he told Newsday Wednesday. "I think what I did doesn't compare to what this case is and what came out of this. It's just a situation where men have to understand that we're men. Women are a lot smaller and not as physical as us. We just have to think before we react. It's not man-on-man. It's man-on-woman and that's unfair."

Vick, who was suspended indefinitely from the NFL and spent 23 months in federal prison, clarified that the Rice situation isn't worse than the crime he committed.

"It's just as bad," he said. "I won't compare dogs to humans in this situation. But you're talking about a man putting his hands on a woman, so it's a totally different realm. You're not talking about somebody abusing an animal. You're talking about a man abusing a woman."

I guess Vick doesn't think a dog is smaller or less physical than an NFL player. Both Rice and Vick should be banned for life from the league. They should not even be allowed to step foot in a football stadium. Pete Rose is banned from Baseball for betting on games. What Rice and Vick have done is much worse. The current problems will continue to plague the NFL until drastic penalities are given out and upheld

They started dating shortly before he was drafted by the Ravens. They met in high school but didn't start dating until he was at Rutgers and she was at a junior college.

:confused3 It's unreal how idiotic some people are.

We have the moron Mayweather in Vegas and he couldn't keep his mouth shut either... claiming the 2 game suspension was the proper punishment and "there's a lot worse things that go on in other people's households, It's just not caught on video".

This from a man who has been arrested for assaulting his wife, assaulting an ex girlfriend, assaulting his kids, had several fights in local businesses, and who was involved in a shooting outside a roller skating rink here in Vegas.

He's absolute scum but because he brings millions of dollars to the local economy he never gets more than a slap on the wrist. It's only a matter of time before he kills someone, even then he'll probably still be able to plea deal down to a misdemeanor.

ETA: Paul George from the Indiana Pacers defended him also, how dumb are these guys to not realize going on TV or even social media to publicly defend a guy for knocking out a woman is not going to end well...:confused3
