Probably not,
We had Cingular and had T-Mobile on one cruise. Dad at AT&T. No Service at sea or Castway Cay. There is no signal range way out in the ocean. You can probably use at the caribbean islands depending on your service and phone. Sorry
Matt
We have both a Nextel Phone and a Cingular wireless phone. The Nextel dies about 5 minutes past land and comes back about 5 minutes before you see Port Canaveral on the return so alternate plans are advised.
On the other hand we have a Cingular Wireless phone that has worked on all the ports of call except Cozumel, and to our surprise on the last trip in November it even worked from Castaway Cay.
Hope this helps, and remember with Nextel when you have no service the direct connect does not work either.
I lost nextel service about 7:30 p.m. on our departure date, or after about 2 1/2 hours of sailing. I had NO SERVICE on any of the Eastern Islands. I plugged in my phone to charge whengetting back on the ship at CC and it rang at about 3:45 a.m. (Sat. morning) to tell me I had voice mail!!
You neglected to say that 3:45 am is about the time the ship is approaching Port Canaveral. They are usually docked no later than 5am.
As a previous poster said, you need cell service to use the 2 way function of the phones. It is not like a two way radio and they do charge you for those beep things, unless you are paying a pretty large # of minutes.
Do not expect much. Nextel is very notorious for NOT roaming and their service is near zero outside the states.
Get some Walkie Talkies to handle this. We use the Motorola Talk Abouts and they do well. Keep in mind that it's a steel structure so it's not perfect but they are a good way to keep in touch when you separate.

My nextel still worked 3 hrs after we left port. GS was talking to his dad who was in michigan on direct connect and it was clear as a bell. It was dinner time so they said goodbye. when we got back to the cabin it no longer worked.
