I suspect this may be an error but the Travel Tools page on Southwest.Com states the following.

We are currently accepting air reservations through April 25, 2011. On October 7, we will open our schedule for sale through June 3, 2011. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently.

Seems awful soon seeing as they just extended to April 25th this morning! :)

I'll take it, but I don't have high hopes. Spring break fares are expensive! My kiddo is flying to LA to visit her grandmother, and the fares are pricey . . . I need May 27th and June 8th, so I'll try to snag May 27th if the prices are right.

They pretty much open them when they say they will.. so I would be looking on Oct 7! We got a good deal the day they released dates for our timeframe so it might be worth it to look!

We are going to Disney June 2-12 and have never planned this far in advance. Is it better to book as soon as prices are released, or should I wait for a DING?

Thanks!

I would check out the fares when they are released and book if reasonable. I personally have never seen a Ding for summer travel to Orlando. If a Ding does come your way, you can always get a credit.

This is in keeping with their original announcement for their next release date. They later came back with an earlier release date and a shorter window of new flights available for booking. It is unusual, but there may be a specific reason. I believe that they were expected to be booking out of Newark with their latest release and that those flights were not added as anticipated. It's possible that they had a temporary snag with getting their Newark operations going but want to be able to book those ASAP. That doesn't really explain the release of April dates this week, however.

When they originally stated their next opening back in August, they were going to be opening through June 5th. They then revised their opening date and shortened the window to April. This is a small window that they are opening up. I suspect the schedule wasn't set yet past April so they had to postpone that part.

But they also originally said that they would release through June during the first week of October and then moved the release date earlier. It is an unusual situation.

Sept. 30 is the end of 3Q for most companies and it may be that they wanted/needed some additional revenue before the books closed for the quarter. Stranger things have happened.
