Next Food Network Star ~ Official 2009 Summer Thread

Ellie's show is on Saturday mornings. She must be doing something right as far as cooking/eating. She has the prettiest skin on FN. Yes, she is kinda boring, but she does make really healthy food that I can relate to and cook. I do watch her regularly.

So far I am not too impressed with any of them. Top Chef is SO different from this show. I feel like none of them are really any great cooks or chefs. I really wanted the last girl from last season to win. Can't think of her name....liked french food and was very impressive. They should have given her a show over Adam or Big Daddy.

The one who looked like a Romulan? Lisa I think her name was. I remember I actually found a photo of a Romulan who looked just like her.

She might have been pretty good with a show. But I'd think it should be the kind of show where she travels around and does cuisines of the world or something.

I liked her too the really trendy girl from last season. Neither DH or I can stand Aaron Mcargo Jr or whatever the heck his name is.
Lisa. But if you haven't seen Big Daddy's House lately, give Aaron another shot. He's MUCH less frantic than in the original episodes.

I forgot I recorded the 2nd airing of the episode at 1am :rolleyes1

I feel bad for Teddie. He helped Melissa just to help her plate and be nice. Now Melissa appears to be angry at him too  He looked embarrassed by Brett.

Brett is a jerk. I said it before and I'm glad to see him go!!

Teddie didn't seem to be doing it out of the goodness of his heart, either. He was being kinda snide at the time. But, I don't think he would have brought it up to the judges though.

Okay, so, with the little we've seen so far... who do YOU think will be the Next Food Network Star?

I can't decide between Jamika and Michael yet.

Jeffrey
Jeffrey
Jeffrey!!!!!

I will NOT watch a show with Michael. He's way too over-the-top for me.

It makes sense that Top Chef is different. They're two different shows that have two different purposes.

I wasn't fond of Lisa. She seemed so fake. Aaron's show is much better than I anticipated... and I still ♥ Adam. He was my favorite from day one.

Did you read my mind? I agree with all that you said--especially the part about Debbie!

It's my super power :rotfl:

I don't really understand what people like so much about Jamika. She's kinda ho hum to me. Maybe its because I'm from the south but I'm just thinking ok you made cornbread and collard greens....ho hum, we already have Paula Deen and the UBER Obnoxious Neely's for that!

I guess I like her because she's so composed. And I can't stand the Neely's. Or that "Cooking for Real" girl. My boyfriend and I make fun of her. I think she'd probably make similar foods, but I'd watch her more. No one could replace Paula though! :snooty:

.

I guess I can see that Teddy wasn't doing it just to be nice. Idk, I don't think he would have brought it up if it weren't for Brett. It was either some very crafty editing or he didn't want to be talking about it at all. And if that's the case, he was just helping...or he was hoping it would get back to the judges that he helped and that would improve his image, but I doubt that he did it to screw with Melissa.

I just don't like him. He's offputting no matter his frantic level. He just seems creepy to me. But, I'm glad people enjoy him. I don't wish him ill will or for his show to be cancelled or anything....I just can't watch him. He's up there with the Neely's and Emeril's live show for me.

See now I like Michael for the exact reason that he is just being himself. He reminds me of a few of my friends who refuse to water themselves down for people because they may see them as "over the top". He just is who is is, and I like that :thumbsup2

Off to read Bob's blog!

No, I definitely don't think he was doing it to screw her. But there was a degree of... IDK... smugness about it from him that bothered me. I absolutely agree that he would not have brought it up, though.

I wouldn't want him to change who he is, either :) Not for my benefit, at least... LOL. I just don't think I could watch him.

I am soooo glad Brett got kicked off - what a jerk! Plating does not equal cooking the food. Beyond that I think she had plenty of time to finish on her own without his nonsense!

Jamika is nice and calm on camera - however we already have the Neely's on TFN cooking the same style food and the queen of southern cooking - Paula so I'm not sure we really need another....

Melissa needs to really tone it down to have a show worth watching.

Michael - way too over the top - ready for him to go home soon!

Looking forward to next week :thumbsup2

now I have seen the first show -

The Gatekeeper of Badness - bwaaaahaaaaha

At this point I think it will be Jeffrey. He is the most poised and has chops. The judges seem to like him. I'm betting Antioxidant girl will be next to leave.

Although I watch TNFNS I think its a poor copy of Top Chef. I just went to the Foodnetwork website and TNFNS and Bob has a blog. Oh COME ON!! Top Chef always had Blogs ~ Tom C's, Gail's and Toby's. I guess I'm tired I've been up for 19 hours and still have 5 more hours of work. So I'm not my usually charming self.

TNFNS isn't trying to be Top Chef. They're looking for someone to host a cooking show on TV. I just don't get the comparison.

And everyone I know has a blog.

I always thought she looked like Millie from Throughly Modern Millie to me.

I really want FN to do a show again like 40$ A Day. That used to be one of my favorite shows (behind Good Eats) and Guy isn't really cutting it for me :confused3. I think Lisa would've been a fine replacement.

Eddie doesn't know what he's talking about, I doubt he'll last much longer.

He used to be my fav at first, but after that Valentines Day story went a bit too far, he's on the bottom.

Agreed. And Bob has had a blog since they first started doing Next Food Network Star

Top Chef came first and had huge ratings and following. Their format ~ A quick fire challenge which sometimes gives the winner immunity or an advantage in the Elimination Round. The quick fire always has a surprize celebrity who gives the quick fire challenge and then awards the winner. Then an elimination round which always has a twist. After the Elimination Round they competitors face the Judges Table where they are critiqued (sometimes harshly) by the hosts and a guest judge. The Winners are "safe" and can leave the losers stay and sometimes defend themselves or their dish. Sound Familiar????? The prize is $100,000 and a feature in Food & Wine. Generally they go on to have their own Restaurants or get offered huge jobs. The level of recipes and difficulty of the challenges don't compare. The worst Top Chef contestant would mop the floor with the NFNS challengers in terms of cooking ability. But then again TC contestants are professionals and NFNS are entertainers/cooks.

I actually find TNFNS entertaining and watch it. But After watching Top Chef you can't help but feel its a dummied down version. Check out Top Chef Masters and you'll see what I mean. What I feel is really interesting is that Michael Chiarello (Easy Entertaining) on the Foodnetwork is actually a Top Chef Master competitior. I really like his show and will be interested to see how he fares.

And everyone I know has a blog.

Top Chef has always had blogs by the Judges and I always enjoyed the insight into the behind the scenes. They also have exit interviews which can be pretty insightful. I never really watched TNFNS regularly. I'd catch an episode or two maybe watch the finale. So when I went on the website tonight and saw the blog I was just struck how much everything seemed to be just like TC.

^^ That's what I thought. But I wasn't sure and too lazy to look it up. LOL.

My point was... the purpose of TNFNS is to find a personality to be on TV. You can be the most amazing cook in the world and if you don't have that charisma, it won't work. There are plenty of people who can cook, but would never be able to do a TV show.

Season 1 of Next Food Network Star started June 5, 2005.
Season 1 of Top Chef started February 15, 2006.

Thats soo funny. My girlfriend works for Comcast. And she told me that Bravo Top Chef was first and Foodnetwork took their format. For years I thought TC came first. I just took her word for it. Shame on me.
