next DVC Resort

I think river county will finish first, since mid/high rises take more time to build and the site work looks more complicated on this one, but it could be a race.

I suspect the DVC expansion plans hit a giant pothole this week. With a massive downturn in guests from Japan arriving in Hawaii now (see
USA Today Travel from Wedesday).....and anticipated sales from Japanese preparing to dry up for hotel rooms AND timeshares in Hawaii......they may have to sit tight for a while - delay opening section 2 and 3 in Hawaii. Besides, they still have DVC properties to sell at WDW first.

As we all know, Disney decided to target our British and Japanese guests a few years ago - lots of promos and incentives because the grownups decided THIS was their future market. I guess the person who came up with that idea has had his office moved to the basement.

Orlando paper broke the news a few weeks ago that the number of British guests has dropped significantly in the last 12 months and it's going to be a long time before we now see Japanese guests in any great numbers. Heck - they are worried about attendance at Toyko Disneyland the next 6 to 12 months.

Hey - maybe they will have to be NICE to US again......their die-hard loyal, loving and adoring guests from the United States!!

I'm not sure 2011 and 2012 will be the years fellow castmember Bob will manage to do away with discounts - as promised for the end of 2009.

Keep your eyes open for new WDW and DL specials.

(and keep all of our friends in Japan in our prayers.)

if you look at a satellite view, it doesn't appear that there's a lot of room to expand, but I could be wrong.

From what I understand there is a small piece of land between the Wedding Pavilion and the main building that they are talking about. From the plan that I saw they are showing a new "t-shaped" building, and it would require some shoreline modifications to pull off.

Just in looking where it is planned for and the fact that there is no dedicated pool planned makes me skeptical that this is any close to being a reality.

yeah when I was looking at the satellite imaging I totally ignored that part of the grounds lol

Without knowing the number of rooms at this point, I'm thinking this is of the scale of the Grand Californian expansion, and not BLT.

They'd have to do some reclamation, as the footprint extends beyond the current beach.

They could potentially claim the pool that is right there.

agreed, agreed, and agreed.

pools are not and issue...the pools at GF are always lightly used...to be honest...when they built the second one nobody could figure out why...except the sliding board thing.

second...they are gonna charge high points for rooms...you know...to keep out the riffraft"...which means it will be a small unit (max 150...but more like wilderness lodge's 115 or so) so that they don't run the risk of not filling it and can cater to a "certain" clientele. (buy that...i mean "disney nuts" and "lying, cheating, thieving bankers and their families")

so i see about 100-125 units. small, elegant, fiberglass
and of course - "concierge"...the unique kind that can't get you a table or acknowledge that there is civilization on the southern side of I-4.:woohoo:

I think concierge is highly unlikely. They only have it at AKL because of the rooms they took over. They have not added it anywhere else, even with the opportunity. I don't think they want that level of overhead cost.

yeah...i agree with you on animal kingdom...but i disagree that concierge would be rejected due to "overhead"

what overhead? they could whack you more points to recoup some of the operating costs in maintenance fees, and all the food and liquor is bought en masse...so that could be justified fairly easily. And the employees...yeah...a big fat 7.25 and hour...
...a value meal at McD's

I disagree that they'd easily recoup the cost, or the cost for that matter. They'd rather sell the interests in more rooms than lose the space to a concierge lounge. Guests using their points don't really pay the bills. Whacking GFV owners for higher fees to pay that bill also doesn't necessarily do them much good as there would be a limited number of such rooms so everyone gets to pay while few get to use.

The only way IMO you would see CL villas at GF is if they also took over existing CL rooms like they did at AKL and used the existing facilities.

The Stars May be aligning for The Grand Floridian to be the next DVC Resort

Disney to close Grand Floridian spa for 18 months

Walt Disney World is closing the spa at its most-expensive resort for 18 months as the company embarks on an expansion project at the hotel.

The spa the Grand Floridian hotel — one of only two full-service spas in Disney World — will shut down Sept. 19.

"We are in the early stages of an expansion project at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa," Disney spokesman Bryan Malenius said Friday. The spa will "temporarily close this fall as part of a planned renovation."

The Grand Floridian is considered one of the top spots to stay on Disney property. With nearly 900 rooms, the Victorian-themed hotel has standard room rates that begin at $440 a night.

Disney would not share details about the expansion project Friday, but there has been speculation the building to be constructed next to the spa will contain units to be sold by Disney Vacation Club, the company's time-share operation.

I wonder if they're just closing it because of all the construction noise? wont be a very tranquil place for a massage etc with all that going on im sure!

:confused3

The spa is run by a third party operator...I don't honestly think they would care at all if it is down for an extended period of time.

The reality is that they can't be in a position where they have nothing in Florida to sell...their sale at contemporary is nearly done...and I'm guessing that they have used the contemporary as a lure to then push sales toward animal kingdom...

This is surprising to no one...I'm only mildly surprised that the Polynesian didnt get their unit first - though its safe to assume that they are selling in the actual Hawaii might have something to do with that.

At some point there will DVC add on everywhere at WDW possible...it's a near given.

I'm just not sure if it's good for the quality of the place any more though...

Jeff Lange has video of the construction area. A little more than a remodel...:rolleyes1
Grand Floridian DVC Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vRVgQFV_xY

That's not where the unit's going... It will be on the lagoon side ofthetracks...they'll do a partial fill of the lagoon and then you'll see a "T" shaped timeshare block as far our as they can get it without obstruction the view of the fibercastle from the wedding pavilion.

Mark that down...though this shakeup with DVC management and fiscal fraud allegations might have put this on hold temporarily

lockedoutlogic you are very correct. The video is of the renovated spa, new road and parking lot according to these blueprints:
Grand Floridian DVC Blueprints

the beauty of public filings is that

A: they're always leaked
B: the generally have to tell the truth.

DVC at the Grand is now a guarantee. and if not for the very ugly black eye that they are taking in Hawaii that came to light in recent weeks - i think we would have seen a public announcement.

Don't be surprised if there is a "big" revelation of the plans on October1st...

just have a hunch.
