OK guys - Stop posting Star Wars stuff in this thread! Some of us just don't want to know. I just scrolled through an entire page without reading it....I guess I have to stay off this website too for the next three days. THanks. See you all Sunday.
I'd advise people to use the spoiler feature. But there really hasn't been any spoilers in here yet.

Tiny bit of plot telling, possible tiny SPOILER. Skip second half of article if you want to be completely in the dark. First part just discusses box office numbers.
I didn't even read all of it only the box office numbers.

Star Wars The Force Awakens made $57 million for Thursday showings. That is a record. I'm interested to see the rest of the weekends numbers.

A lot. :D

The interesting dynamic is how much of the $57 million was already reported. We know there were $100 million in presales... what percentage of the $57 million was presale? 90%, 99%, 50%? I still think the risk is that too many people "wait" - but then again, that helps the staying power. Lowers the big opening, but strengthens the longevity of the film.

$57 million...and the record for a December opening weekend is $84 million correct? Hmm...I'm going to really make a bold prediction that they have a shot at breaking it. I won't go as far as saying they will break it.

They also have to be doing well with a December movie that is huge on merchandise. Although seeing that 71% of those that went yesterday were males, that doesn't help with total sales of merchandise (as we all know that women hold a much larger percentage of the holiday gift buying).

Predictions are opening weekend numbers anywhere from 200 to 250 million.

I was being sarcastic ;-) They only need $27 million to break record with 3 days left to do it...right? (I assume opening weekend includes the Thursday night showings correct?)

I think this phenomena is in some unchartered territory. I saw the movie at 7:15 am this morning. As I exited the theater I struck up a conversation with the manager. He said that after the first showings last night they had another surge in advanced ticket sales. He claimed they were considering adding even more shows over the next two weeks. So maybe the die hards carry the day throughout the weekend, with others jumping on board next week and the weeks after.
So we have Fandango now with a Disney who has convinced theater groups to add as many screens as necessary to meet demand. We'll know the results soon enough.

Adding the theaters helped. My theater for 7 PM last night was not full but not empty either. There were definitely a lot of people at the movie but because they had so many showings it spread people out.
