Isn't opening record weekend in Dec like $80 Million? Wonder what it would have done in peak release weeks. Or wouldn't that have even mattered.

What's interesting is there in NOTHING in theaters until at least mid-February. If this movie is well received - which seems to be the case, it not only will have a huge opening but will have "legs" similar to what happened with Avatar. ("Meh - there's nothing else out, let's see Star Wars again") I think there's zero chance - again if received well - it doesn't beat Avatar's $760 million domestic take.

(If Disney was smart, they would wait until late-January, and re-release the OT to theaters for one week at a time. Talk about pumping the market.)

By the way - interesting fact - Star Wars (the original) is still #7 all time at the US box office, and when adjusted for today's ticket prices, it's Domestic Haul would be $1.485 BILLION - which is 2nd all-time behind Gone with the Wind. Of course, that is sort of cheating, as it made $137 million in box office in making it the 8th biggest domestic release of 1997.

This dragged me down the box-office rabbit hole....how the heck is SHREK 2 the 10th biggest movie of all time.

And can you believe that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is still in the Top 200 domestic box office??? #187 right there between Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Pitch Perfect 2. Wow!

Of the top 200 domestic grossers (not adjusted):
Only 16 were released before 1990.
Only 6 were released before 1980.
Only 2 were released before 1970. (GWTW and SW&t7D - both in the 30s)
Challenge: Without looking - name the 4 that were released between 1970 and 1980 - you already know one - the other 3 have one word titles (well, one has "The" in front of it) ---- GO!

BTW - the top adjusted grossers is not surprisingly a much more interesting list of movies.

The soft schedule is exactly why I think the box office record is in play...

That was EXACLTY how it was for avatar and titanic...a winter of NOTHING.

I don't think Disney was blind to that and I don't think the other studios didn't steer clear either.

In 1999 they ran for cover. In fact...if you remember the trailers for Austin powers: the spy who shagged me...they made a Star Wars spoof of it.
In fact - I'll never forget the announcer "if you see one movie this summer...make it Star Wars...but if you see two..."

And that was a wayyyyy better movie.

Just to clarify...I think the Jurassic world number will fall. I wasn't talking about December...that's already bagged.

Anyone remember the only "competitor" to face off against titanic?

I sure do - the Kevin Costner utopian classic THE POSTMAN

"How much mail can a dead postman deliver?!?"

The academy robbed them :)

Yea that's what I have been wondering.

So are Dec weekends lower because of other things people are doing? Or sharing more screens? A mix?

Our Local 15 has Star Wars on 5 screens, and other movies on 10 for this friday. I would have thought 1/2 maybe.

Typically there's too many distractions...

Everybody shopping at once and 10 days of family functions will do that

@skier_pete
Hateful Eight (new Tarantino movie) is coming out next week. That' s not quite as big as SW by a long shot, but it's probably going to be a pretty popular movie. It was filmed in ultrapanavision (70mm).

Yeah Tarantino isn't very happy about Star Wars taking all the screens up.

He's still getting a lot of love here in Austin. He's kind of considered a hometown boy. Alamo Drafthouse is probably bending over backwards for him. It looks like a good movie.

You mean his 5 year old tantrum on Howard stern yesterday over 1 stinking theater?

Tarantino is about as overrated in my book as Le cellier...

And other than inglorious bastards doesn't get too much notice anymore

I hadn't seen that. It wouldn't be the first time he got his panties in a wad:)

...from your lips to rich men who don't care ears

They have had a ridiculous one...
But...I read a wsj yesterday -
Which I never do because that's satan's newspaper - talking about hoe Disney has gotten almost no traction in China with Star Wars.

Which we've talked about in relation to Shanghai.

China is a huge problem - along with ESPN and the Paris takeover -
That will likely limit domestic parks spending some.
What could've been.

I read something about this as well. The Chinese don't "get" Star Wars apparently because it's in space. However they are big on the Avengers so all is not lost for Disney. :D

I don't think they're bred to care. Their 100 years behind in societal awareness in many cases.

But Disney built a 6 billion dollar park to keep the sweatshops open.

That's the long and short of it.

Actually, while the Postman did open that same Christmas, Titanic's real competition was Tomorrow Never Dies, which not only opened the same weekend, but actually came within $1 million of beating Titantic that opening weekend.

Titanic of course then went on to win 17 weekends in a row - only dropping out of the top spot the first week of April to...wait for it...Lost in Space.

And hey, for those looking at my trivia question back aways...the movie that came in 2nd to Titanic in its 17th week at #1 was one of those other two movies from the 70s in the top 200 box office....and it wouldn't BE in the top 200 if it wasn't for the money made on it's 1998 20th anniversary re-release.

Boy - this isn't much of a news thread.

Alien? 2001?

Are they rom-coms?

Throws me a bone... 70-80, right?

Wait...the shining?

Nope. (2001 is from the '60s) See my hint in the previous post. Another hint: One is a horror movie. One is a musical. (That should do it on the latter.)

One mistake I think Disney is making which I wonder if this could also rectify is to make both the DLR and WDW Star Wars lands Identical. I realize cloned parks is a cost saving measure (and I suppose a bit of a Star Wars tribute). However, there is no doubt in my mind that Star Wars will drive fans to the parks, but if they had the guts to make the parks different, you might even drive East Coasters out to California. (Perhaps they consider that potential revenue not great enough to offset to extra design expenses.)

I was just imagining how insane would the SW fans go if they built a land themed to a different planet in each resort? California would get Endor, Florida would get Dagobah. Maybe Hoth in Paris?

Grease and the shining

I can't think of any other horror movies from the 70s

Wait...the exorcist?

Just got to my theater. Thought it would be more crowded than it is. Getting here early was the right thing to do I guess.

Same here...

The movie is NOT sold out...but when you show it on 22 of 24 screens on a Thursday night...I suppose dec 17 isn't gonna be like memorial day
