I don't know where you live so I don't know what type of restaurants you are comparing this with the Disney to. I can tell you for a fact that except for a few very limited restaurants (V&A obviously being one of them) restaurants at WDW through food that is no better than the average probably below the average of most restaurants where I'm from including the chain restaurants. Back before all the free dining programs and other incentives came into play the food at the Disney restaurants was much better than it is today.
We don't have a lot of fine dining here in Milwaukee but we we do have good restaurants. I agree that WDW food for the most part is average compared to the rest of the world. However I myself wouldn't describe it as bland. I would also go out to say it's a theme park I'm not expecting fine dining where ever I go. I will also agree that the dining plan and incentives like that did make things go downhill.

They're going to be offering two flavors of WoC this Christmas. Winter Dreams and the terrible celebrate.
http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/bl...y-season-at-disney-california-adventure-park/

Two mediocre shows that are worse than the original, so little time.
You know while I've never seen it in person I didn't find winter dreams all that bad. I will agree it's not as good as the original but I don't think it's terrible. Celebrate obviously isn't great either but I also don't think it's terrible but definitely lacking.

They did already. The name of the boat ride was officially announced with some minimal details.

Well, the concept art and the name are fine, but is there anything else to the ride system? And the animatronics? What about the banshee ride? The D23 presentation was so vague in regards of Avatar that I feel like we still don't know a lot of important stuff.

Though I agree both shows are not as good as the original WoC, I actually really enjoy them. Yeah, Neil Patrick Harris showing up every 3 minutes is not exactly fun, and the fact that they toned the fountains down so much in exchange for more projections sucks, but I think it works quite well for the type of story it is. Hopefully the next WoC show they work on will have that epic feel of the original.

I'd agree with your take on winter dreams. I'd be more harsh on celebrate though. What the original lacked in storyline, it made up with heart. Seeing a 70 foot tall awkward host (no diss on NPH, but just about anyone would be awkward in this setting) flying in front of your face is weird. They tried to push the medium in a whole different direction, and unlike other more unique offerings such as Illuminations, failed miserably. The show was just... off. I will respect the fact they tried to do something different. That deserves credit. I also have mixed feelings saying they should go back to the original, as the parks aren't museums and I want them to feel safe taking risks. It's just sometimes risks fail and it's better to cut your losses, especially when it's as simply as changing some programming.

In general my complaints are mostly with the feel or story. I actually thought I saw the animators and show designers having a perfect technical control of their craft. WoC Celebrate's effects are just amazing. I feel like the designers have been playing around with the hardware for 5 years and now really understand it. Like landscape artists who are masters of their craft. The sad thing is instead of being instructed to paint a landscape, they had to paint a wall. Their subject matter was really bad. That's my main issue.

Well we know the name of the banshee ride is flight of passage and we know there will be animatronics and bioluminescence in the river journey but that's about it. They are also still being vague in just saying 2017 rather than an actual date or even early 2017, spring 2017, Summer 2017 or late 2017.

I think WoC is a difficult show to plus or make better because it's already so good. It will be interesting to see what the next version is like eventually. I know we probably won't see that for a while tho.

I think your complaints go back to TWDC. They want to push IP and sell things that's what I think they were trying to do with celebrate. Execs don't let imagineers have all the creative freedom they used to.

The D23 expo Japan got underway for today not too long ago but TDR explorer reported they are being told no phone usage in the theater. They have been shown good dinosaur trailer and the new Japanese Star Wars trailer. I will report if anything else comes up.

What exactly remains of Norway in the "Norway" pavilion, other than the name? The Viking ship and live entertainment are gone. The restaurant is a princess character meal. The ride has been ceded to Frozen, as has the Stave church. The new M&G is Frozen territory. The gift shop has Frozen merch pushing the Norwegian goods further and further back. So what's left, other than the Bakeri - the lonely remnant?

Don't forget the Norway film. That was the most educational part of the pavilion. I know that hardly anyone watched it, but when it's gone that represents just about the last shred of "Norway" being removed.

I think that converting Norway to Frozen Land was clever but also dumb. A smart way to cash in on a movie phenomenon. But it shows a complete lack of interest in understanding both the history and the potential future of Epcot.

My in-laws were not very thrilled with most of WDW but they were extremely thrilled with the international flavor of World Showcase. And these are sophisticated world travelers who've been to most of the countries represented in the pavilions. The drawing power of World Showcase as a kind of fantasy land for people who love travel and foreign cultures, but who are not enchanted with cartoon fairy tales, should not be discounted.

World Showcase is now "a little bit broken". It's like a beautiful pearl necklace where one of the pearls has been replaced with a Pandora charm. Trendy ... but really tacky.

See, when dealing with IP it really depends for me. The original WoC is full of popular IPs that help sell merchandise. The fireworks fit in that category too. Yet, those shows are heartwarming, nostalgic and most of the times big and epic. However, I agree that there's something related to Celebrate that just doesn't work. Both the Star Wars and the Frozen segments are some of the highlights of the show, yet they feel like a very in-your-face product placement that takes you away from the story they are trying to tell. As I said, though, I like the show even though I wouldn't have used NPH's image throughout the show, and I would've made it bigger/louder/more intense. There are just a couple of ocassions in this show that compare to the feel of the Pocahontas, Lion King, Pirates or Little Mermaid segments from the original. It's still a nice show, and I appreciate it for what its intentions were.

I don't agree. Disney restaurant food is fine, not great, but certainly not worse than average restaurants - especially if you are talking about most mid-range chains such as Applebee's or Friday's I think Disney is better. Of course it is terribly overpriced, but that goes without saying. The signature dining restaurants I've been to (California Grille, Jiko, Yachtsman) are excellent and on par with fine dining in most areas of the country. And as far as I'm concerned, anyone that thinks Disney food used to be much better (in general) is looking at the past through rose-colored glasses. (I think as we get older - our tastes in food shift, and our standards shift as well.) Persnonally, though, at least back into the nineties I think the restaurants were at a very similar level of quality. Of course this is just MY opinion, which I am allowed to have just as much as you are allowed to have yours.

Since some people were complaining about people making comments in this thread - I'll add some NEWS:

Jimmy Kimmel is having an episode dedicated to the new Star Wars movie on November 23rd.

Pete, I didn't say there should be "no comments"...I asked if we could simply move on from the continued "it's my opinion" comments about food.

I don't think this should be "news, all news, and nothing but news"... I sometimes comment on off-topic messages...it's good to be a social group. I just think that after several replies to non-news topics, we could just move on - when the topic strays, perhaps we could just use a little restraint and come back around to the thread title "NEWS ROUNDUP". Just my opinion...

I usually enjoy reading your posts...along with many of the other frequent posters...I don't always agree, and don't often reply, but I read all the posts.

So, following your lead, in order to bring some NEWS into this post, here's something interesting:

Tokyo DisneySea unveiled their theme for the 15th anniversary celebration. The Year of Wishes. It was accompanied by a new song called When your heart makes a wish.

Walls are down in the castle forecourt and shrubbery is up. Both ramps look like they are done

They are temporarily done. The walls/railing between each lamp are temporary. It's expected that they will have the ramps open for the holidays and then put the new permanent railings in after the holidays.

No - I actually agree with you - sometimes this thread gets bogged down in comments that would be better served in a separate thread - and I wasn't responding specifically to your post for you are not the first to say that. That's why I threw in the piece of news.

Now - a separate comment on the "Avatar in 2017". The reason Disney doesn't tie to a specific date this far out is that construction issues are unpredictable, and they could easily run into issues. At this stage - by saying 2017 - they could open it at any time. My guess is they would PREFER to open it earlier in the year, or at least before the summer season. While 2016 they'll have the new Frozen and Soarin' rides, it will be a year of little new stuff and lots of stuff on the horizon, which will likely adversely affect travel. (If you only go once in your life and you know all these things are coming in 2017/2018, are you booking in 2016? My guess is we will have pretty firm dates by the time they start looking at 2017 bookings, so probably by next summer.
