News Round Up 2020

Did something happen? Jackie's WDW update page has popped to the top of the news threads on the right column. I skimmed over it but didn't see anything. None of the TPAS or resorts threads have any updates either.
Nothing that I know of.

I bet it won't find loose ice :rotfl2:

I tend to think that for larger events, these scanners will become more adopted. For example, this year's Indy 500 with ~300K fans will be a huge challenge to scan the fans. Maybe they can be shipped across different sporting events as a floating stock.

But, I think you and I will be there in August (or now a rumor of it being pushed to October). If you guys didn't get those hotel room(s) for October, you might want to book them just to play it safe! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the heads up. Do you know when in October? We still have current plans to be there. I don't think they dig around in the bags as much at Indy as they do at WDW. They could go with the clear bag thing at Indy, since many other sporting events do this too.

Sometimes people's wish lists are answered!

This sounds really convenient. No more small talk with security guards as they ask the life story for every item in my bag (sorry not sorry for those of you who live for the small talk, I can see the gates and I just want to get in the park).
I can’t help but think of how much time and money Disney has recently/is spending on the new bag check areas. Wonder if they’ll revamp them even before opening them? Bag check lines are notoriously squished together with not a lot of room for easy social distancing.

Not that Disney would have known what was coming, just commenting out loud.

I highly doubt it, but I think catching truly dangerous items is the main goal, and honestly with the need for a new post covid screening process I think this is the only thing that should be of concern initially. They can focus on looking for contraband and other banned items later. People still get selfie sticks in all the time. But they aren’t allowed to use them in the parks or a CM will say something to them. I’m not worried about someone bringing in a flask or a selfie stick right now. A fast way to get through security that’s efficient at catching weapons would be an upgrade if it works as well as it claims. Bag check obviously finds things occasionally but I’ve always worried that it’s wouldn’t be too difficult to sneak something through if you can avoid the metal detectors.
I think the biggest issue with the current bag checks (from a security point of view at least) is that they are massive soft target. You don't need to get a weapon into the parks, when you have hundreds of people standing around in a tightly packed area, at least assuming terrorism is your goal.

We went through the new bag check yesterday. It was much wider than traditional metal detectors. There was a CM off to the right when you came through looking at the person walking through, then her phone. To the left, were a couple of stations with traditional grey buckets and a monitor/screen/iPad or something for people that need more investigation. There were LOTS of police present and seemed to be a lot of WDW leadership watching and at Disney Springs in general. I’m all for this new way! We talked about how once we figure out if any of our regular stuff sets it off (ie external phone charger or something), we’ll send it through with me so I’d just have that and my phone and my husband wouldn’t have to take everything out of his pockets or our bag.

To me, it was just SAD being there. We’re not huge DS fans and really only go when we can’t go to the parks for some reason. Our poor kids rode the carousel - socially distanced - just for some resemblance of normalcy. Sucks to be here in Central FL (at the beach) and not be able to break it up with some Disney Days. We look forward to these trips because we usually get at least one kid-free day there while they play with grandparents at the beach.

Watched Artemis Fowl. I agree it was rushed! It was okay to watch, but i'm glad it was free on Disney +! :D

Looking forward to The One and Only Ivan!!!

We watched it too.... never read the books, and our kids are grown with kids of their own, so not familiar with content before watching. For us, while we enjoyed it, it was just a bit "lacking" in detail - I guess "rushed" is a good term. Glad we didn't pay to rent it. I'd say we enjoyed "Wrinkle in Time" more, but not by much.

That does not sound like something that my insulin pump can be exposed to. :/

My husband uses the Omnipod and has no issues using the airport scanners (we'd spoken to Insulet about it a few times the first time he flew with a pod on). Assuming they're the same types of scanners, it shouldn't be an issue - but you can always request to have a manual search.

So nothing official yet, but sounds like Mulan has been delayed and Tenet is back to being the first major release.
The way things are going .. it will take a while for theaters to get their "groove" back. I mean restaurants around here have been open for a while and even at "half capacity" .. I felt like just only this past weekend are some places getting to the point where you have to wait for seating.

So being the first major release is probably not a good thing. Going out to a restaurant or an outdoor theme park is one thing - as those are experiences you just can't simulate at home. I am just not sure people are itching to rush back into the theaters. Just way too convenient (and cheaper) to do it from home.

Looks like at Hong Kong Disney you have to make a "Health Declaration" when reserving a park ticket (since they don't have the Health QR system like at Shanghai I guess this replaces that)

BlogMickey is speculating this could be seen in the US as well (though I think it might be more like a disclaimer like what they have on the signs at Disney Springs that says you acknowledge by entering you may contract Covid)

Two concerns I have with what Disney is acquiring. One is are they also purchasing the facial rec software, Pretty sure Disney will pay for that add on, because well its Disney and they like there security, there are positives and negatives for both. Second is, can it determine that a light saber or a blaster is not a hidden weapon or more to the point, My kilt pins tend to be 2 to 4 inch pewter sword shaped Items, Disney security has never had a issue with them, will the detector be able to tell that my pin isnt a blade at all but just a sword shaped miniature that has zero sharpness or even a sharp point.

If it can't, you get a secondary screening where you can explain your situation. No problem
