News Round Up 2016

Princess & the Frog. One of my favorite movies, as well as DD8. Loved seeing Louis in parade. I disagree with this. Hope he's back on our next trip.
Really hope they bring him into Mickey's friendship Faire where he's supposed to be- also, I'm pretty sure he's not in a parade... You might be thinking of Tick Tock Croc after the Peter Pan float in FoF.

Cast members started to receive their official wildlife update today that they have to be signed off on in order to work.

Briefly explained the multiple types of wildlife on property and what to do if spotted. It did however state that guests should not be feeding any wildlife, including ducks.

I noticed this post on Disney Parks Blog. The dessert parties must not be selling as reservations started on May 6.

Well prices did increase/ were higher than advertised. Official website updated a week later after tickets went on sale. I believe this is 1st year for a MVMCP Dessert Party. Disney been behind on MVMCP Dessert Party & dining guidelines on party night. MNSSHP & MVMCP info wasn't released together like in previous years.

Always seemed to me a special circle of hell where you have to pay for a premium event within another premium event that you paid extra for. Maybe they should have VIP seating for dessert party and they can get people to pay THREE times. (I probably shouldn't give them ideas.)

It reminds me of a comedian I saw on TV years ago. He said most clubs have a VIP lounge that only cool people can get into, but recently he found out that some of them have a VIP lounge inside the VIP lounge where even cooler people hang out. “How far does this go? Eventually you just end up in a broom closet with Jack Nicholson.”

I guess the Dinsey equivalent would be the Dream Suite with Bob Iger

Yep - Alice flopped - but once Dory crosses it, Disney will have FIVE box office movies that did more than $300 Million Domestic (Force Awakens made more than $300 million after Jan 1st - plus Zootopia, Jungle Book, Captain America & Dory), and all have made near more than $1 billion international. Good chance they have 1-3 more. (Don't forget Dr. Strange and Moana are still to come as is Rogue 1.)

Alice as a product will probably still make money, though. While the movie has only done $72 mil here in the US, it's worldwide total is now $239 mil and its production budget was $170 mil. There are still blu-ray sales, merchandise, TV rights, soundtracks, etc. to sell so it won't be the major financial flop most people think it is when you add everything up for Disney.

This is a risky balance though - part of the appeal of DVC is "luxury accommodation at moderate prices". In this secnario, what they are selling is "moderate accommodation at moderate prices". A dangerous choice: Even in year scenario of 100 point contracts, are people going to spend $17,000+ to buy in to a moderate accommodation? It's the exact OPPOSITE of what DVC has been doing the last 5-6 years.

The definition of luxury in this case is twofold in my opinion-- one, larger rooms with better amenities, and two, location and access to parks. What would stop a new CBR resort from having at least one of them? If they build new buildings and create access to Epcot and HS, In my opinion the new location will be a notch above SSR and OKW.....(maybe just one click) Who needs a on site restaurant when you have connection to epcot and boardwalk-- For this reason I am also very interested to see what happens with the plot outside BCV where they just appliet for change of use to buildable ground--

I agree (again) - the savings of 10 points versus 14 points a night - people that are already bought in won't want to downgrade. Will the owners at CBR be willing to upgrade?

Think of all the people who bought the minimum points for any location in hopes to stay in the lowest point studios available.. the GF syndrome ...
Now give them an entire location with better access than SSR and OKW and a similar point cost--- I think very many would be glad to "downgrade"

Lowering the price is the only option - lowering the quality is dangerous. They are unlikely to do either.

Actually I hope they don't do either.....

I think you give Disney too much credit. I still think what we will see is that they will use the infrastructure of CBR but build a separate resort of higher quality. As I said - picture an SSR level resort. Having direct access to epcot would be a big sell point.

Yup

You forget the P&A budget (aka the advertising costs) and that many overseas locations do not return as much revenue as the US does (for example, China is known for keeping a large portion of ticket fees and returning under 45%). Also, "hard" sales (DVDs/Blu Rays) and digital sales no longer are as profitable as they once were (nor are all those other things you mentioned - I mean, the merchandise of a failed movie could actually be another loss when it doesn't sell...and this one won't)...

So, a good rule of thumb for a blockbuster to break even is making 3x production costs worldwide. So, Alice needs to make $500Mish worldwide...and it won't be anywhere close. It will likely by a $200M+ write down...

Permits were filed for sound installation for avatar land at AK.

Permits were filed for a model room at Saratoga Springs. A model room is something they do before they start a room refurbishment across the resort. The model room gives them an idea for what they should look like.

Star Wars Galactic Spectacular with the flame throwers

I really like it...

My one pet peeve is they use the ending music from Star Wars too much in the park and in this...

...the roll Credits music from Jedi was much better (after yub yub) and has an iconic bridge that every Star Wars fans loves - and Abrams/Williams did put in the force awakens - if a slightly abbreviated version.

When I take over...I'm recutting that music. And definitely putting the hyperspace piece from Empire in too ;)

Finding Dory #1 again with $73M in domestic box office. Total take $286M with International haul at $110M.

Of note: This film has one of the strangest release strategies I've ever seen. It has not seen wide release yet, and doesn't open until end of September in Germany. So, looks like it'll be a long and slow earner - but at current rate, $1B is not unreasonable, but $800M is more likely.
