gators tend to not be active during the day but if guests have been feeding the gators, then at the very least not only do signs need to be up at all resorts that are on natural waterways to not feed any of the wildlife especially the gators and ducks, but also they now need to leave fliers in all rooms at the resorts warning guests not only to not feed the wildlife but also the activity of gators especially during the months o may to august

Not sure why but this Duncan Dickson's quote in the article seems ridiculous to me:

"In the same article, former Disney executive Duncan Dickson said: “The entire property is interconnected via canals so it is difficult to keep them out of the lakes. Gators are on all of the golf courses. The team attempts to relocate the gators to the uninhabited natural areas as best they can, but the gators don’t understand the boundaries.”

He makes it sound like its a cultural miscommunication between humans and alligators.

Should Disney have put up better signage? Maybe.
Should the parents kept the kid out of the water. Probably.

But who in the world would have imagined a gator to GOBBLE A KID UP RIGHT ON THE BEACH SHORE????

We all want to point the blame somewhere, but sometimes there is no "fault" in these freak accident situations. That poor, poor family.

This was my thought, but instead of brochures, signage anywhere that they can be fed (Beach Club is another location they're frequently seen)

This is inaccurate. Last night was Ferry Boat only operation after 9:45pm. All other seven seas and bay lake transportation resumed today. Resort marina rentals are still closed.

It doesn't matter how many signs you put up, people will continue to do these things. There's always a portion of the population that believes it doesn't apply to them. People feed animals at the zoo too.

While it's a horrible event, the fact it's happened so rarely suggests to me that it's not something that Disney could really have predicted. Now it's happened though, if I was then I'd just shut down the beaches as more trouble than they are worth. Because no matter what signs you put up, people will see a beach and assume they can paddle.

I don't disagree about the signs, my point was more about trying to deter people from actually FEEDING the gators. If that has gotten worse because of the Poly bungalows, Disney needs to put an end to that SOON. it doesn't take much for any animal to learn where to go for food...

What they should do is close the beaches at say 10PM and that's that. I don't know if that will happen but my guess is signing around the lakes will change.

I have no idea if they will work or not, but I have read since this attack that it's something they do often in Australia, so they obviously at least think it works. I think underwater curves fences would work better, and then you eliminate the threat of getting caught in boat motors. Are there areas of the lagoon where boats are never needed to access? If so the fences could come above the water. But honestly, I just don't think it's necessary to do anything. We've been here 45 years and this is the first time anything has happened, and now Disney will be making people ultra aware of the danger. I doubt we have worry about this happening again any time soon.

Very sad if true. I always looked forward to that almost as much as the ride. Good news is we have it preserved forever on youtube and I might just wear headphones and listen to it instead sometimes. haha. I plan on trying this with Mael...I mean Frozen Ever After at some point while watching a video of Maelstrom with headphones (from the back of the boat of course.)
