News Round Up 2016

Beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Perhaps one of the most special Disney Parks globally. Not as intimate as one of ours, but still something so right.

It's distinctly modern. It's more Animal Kingdom, DCA, or Tokyo Disneysea than Disneyland or Magic Kingdom. There are deeply themed immersive areas that are designed to be transformative. Instead of tight pathways, there are wide open spaces. It's much more open in its IP usage.

Also, unlike our Magic Kingdoms, everything was built with intent and a strong vision. Our Magic Kingdoms have been slowly iterated on and have been changed from their original intent. Walt didn't really know what he was doing when he first opened Disneyland. It was through years of iteration that he created the park. Magic Kingdom only found itself after years of investment and fully building out. Shanghai knows, much like Disneyland Paris knew, what it was going to be. It's pure. Not changed from its original vision. It's not been iterated on in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

Of course it means it's not yet reached its potential, it's not yet knocked off the major imperfections, and it's not yet fully built out. It doesn't have has much character. I wouldn't trade either MK or Disneyland for this park. Not yet. Though, for right now, it's totally cohesive.

I also understand perfectly why Expedition Everest is in the pipeline. The majesty of the Forbidden Mountain will complement this park wonderfully.

I have a good feeling about this...

Also Tom Bricker needs to get to China as soon as possible!
I also can't wait to see the bricker-ized Shanghai photos

I agree with everything you said, except Paris. Initial plans were to make it a better park than what it turned out, because of budget costs.

Budget cuts and Star Wars land construction at Disneyland

I get things like reducing some of the food carts and making some less frequented restaurants more seasonal - bummer to hear small things like only running one train a Casey Jr. I mean, how much more can it cost to run two trains and for the impact that people have to wait 2-3x longer just doesn't seem worth it

Also, I know the extra hours packages are at WDW and this is Disneyland, but it is definitely going to rub people the wrong way when they see these extra ticketed events and then read here about reduced hours. I am all for Disney adding extras that cost extra but would hope that wouldn't reduce the "base" experience that regular guests receive

Side note: that picture with the scroller that lets you see compare how the park looks "before" and "after" Star Wars Land is added is pretty darn cool

To be fair, I'm pretty sure that regular hours have been cut at WDW as well (but you can buy extra hours).

I think certain components were lost, but as a whole Disneyland Paris is extremely lavish. One of the biggest and boldest departures from the three traditional Disneylands before it. It's not perfect, but it is regarded as one of the most beautiful parks in the world. Sadly they followed it up with the rather uninspired Hong Kong Disneyland... (though Tomorrowland and Adventureland in that parks are exquisite)

View attachment 167217 This is how they looked on our last trip.

I had to look back at our trip photos to compare to the new photos from Shanghai. Their clothes are a bit different. Mickey's new bow tie is smaller and he is wearing skinnier pants. Minnie's dress used to have polka dots all over instead of the solid red area at the top. Also, Minnie's new shoes have a red bow, rather than being solid yellow.

That sounds more like a "Spot the Difference" game than a whole different look.

Well, that is my point. It is one thing to sell extra hours that truly are extra, above and beyond what was offered as normal hours in the past, vs cutting hours and then asking people to pay extra for hours they normally would have had included in their regular ticket

(just was specifying parks as this article was about Disneyland Hours, and the extra hours are at WDW)

Sorry, I read your comment wrong. Thought you were talking about people who go to DL being rubbed the wrong way by WDW being open longer. Reread your comments and it makes sense now. Completely agree with you.

It's ironic how when Harry Potter world came to Universal many bemoaned how it would have such a negative impact on WDW attendance. While it had an impact I think WDW handled it fairly well. Now Disney studios just surpassed Universals records for the 1B-2B-3 Billion marks. Wonder if the people at Universal studios are getting nervous about Disney studios. Also wonder if this was a "shots fired" moment for Disney and they made a concerted effort to "attack" Universal on their home court.
