Already beat you to it up above. :P

EDIT: Also, we already have our reservations for Sunday, May 12th!! Apparently, I have also found it that you can wrangle a free cupcake from Sprinkles if you make one now. I don't know how it works, but one of my work friends going in June got an email for a free Sprinkles cupcake for making a reservation there.

Not to stereotype but just as a casual observation, my gut tells me that the pictures per visitor at that park will be the 10 x that of any Disney park on the planet. pirate:

Well, if Hong Kong Disney is any indication you are probably right - was just there and everyone was constantly taking pictures and they all had selfie sticks (they were allowed in the park, but not on attractions) - and I guess I think now is to use the selfie stick but hold the camera at an angle to make the pictures look "artistic" or something ... and you have to do the peace symbol with your fingers

Any studies to show florida visits to Olrando and whether folks cross shop universal and disney in the same trip? My gut tells me that Universal's development benefited Disney more than hurt it. If you are planning a week vacation, with Universal as your prime focus, you'll likely still have a spare day or two to give to Disney. It's a little harder to go the other way. The airport definitely seems busier, Disney seems busier, the entire area seems busier. For the increased visits, Disney has been able to allow Universal to spend a larger portion. We give disney a hard time for not developing more in the last decade, but they haven't needed to. They've turned Orlando into a huge vacation destination, and that investment is bearing fruit 10 fold.

Does anyone actually plan a week long Universal trip? What do they do after the first two days?

I'm sure people do. I can see people spending a good 3-4 days in the parks. Then you have wet n wild to go to if you want, soon you'll have volcano bay. You have city walk to explore and 4-5 resorts. I can see you getting a good 5 days of just universal after that I think I would probably explore outside universal in the Orlando area.

It woild be extremely hard to get 5 days out of universal. Someone did a very accurate time count of all the parks (based on facts not opinions) and it gave a real good idea of how long to stay in parks. iOa was a shorter park than any Disney park. And it's counterpart was better but still didn't bring it to same universe as magic kingdom. Die hard universals will argue but in actuality universal is at most a 3 day trip and that would be pushing it for many visitors

I think that 450 acres will change that 3 day mark though.

We will see. It will be more complicated since it is not as easily accessible as the Disney parks are to each other. I also saw some less favorable things in the plans they had - meaning it isn't situated as ideally as a theme park would like. Just more complicated than a Disney world would have. Everybody harps on how long Disney takes to make things but part of that comes back to how they try to plan EVERYTHING, which is impossible but the result is things are more accessible. I am afraid universal may rush to produce something great, at short term they can but it may be hard to create something that sticks. IMO

The 450+ acres is more than enough for a theme park, hotels, and the rumored second city walk area. As you said yes they will need to figure out how to make these things accessible. People have speculated about some sort of monorail system, bus system, and more. I think that's what they would have to do and they do use buses and boats already with their resorts. I don't think universal will rush to create a third park. A third park at universal has been rumored for years. They have Nintendo rights as well that they aren't rushing to use. A lot of their recent additions have been high quality and that rumored third park I have heard things like DisneySea level quality.

I know people will argue, but universals doesn't have the proven content to build a their park to draw people in. Harry Potter is their biggest draw but putting in a third park is a risk that might not be worth it. Marvel may not be as great at pulling guests as most might think - you have a really hard time creating areas that immerse you Ina movie that doesn't feel like a normal city. Nintendo is unproven and many would argue not the flagpole of an entire park. Same would go with dream works. Universal has content yes, but a lot of it is complimentary content, not something that will draw in big crowds. And many have tossed around the idea of acquiring something like LOTHR but the their is a number of obstacles there including the cost to acquire it would probably hinder the ability to create the infrastructure for a new park. Remember universal is like Disney - there are stock holders and spending money where there isn't proof that it will bring in more money can be an issue with their stocks. It is a larger mountain that most will be able to see. They have the land, that isn't only a small mountain. Honestly, the biggest mistake they could make is opening a third park that just pulls people from their existing parks. They can't afford that

Don't read too much into the 450 acres or that anyone wants to be Disney.

Margins drive the industry and Disney's are not the crown jewel. There is interest in being the dominant player but not in how Disney did it. There is far too much infrastructure and sunk costs. Companies (Universal) will attempt to achieve Disney's scale and share of entertainment but it will be different.

What that is and how it plays out is yet to be seen. But no one is trying to create WDW2.0. Not because they can't but because it's not as profitable as smaller parks with less infrastructure. Universal is getting nearly same cost single day tickets and food/add on prices as Disney with 1/4-1/3 of the parks. If they add a 3rd gate would they be able to charge more than Disney? No. So they need something "else". Not a 3rd gate - it needs to be a distinct and separate destination.

Nintendo wouldn't be the whole park there just isn't enough there. Marvel is rumored to be expanded at IOA as well. Don't forget Comcast just bought Dreamworks which gives them a lot of content. Secret Life of pets is a universal film they are hoping does really well so they can bring that into the parks. Who knows universal could even look at Original attractions something Disney used to pride itself on.

I think that's why Volcano Bay will be part of that. It's something that's rumored to be almost a theme park and water park hybrid. A second city walk area has also been discussed and of course more resorts.
