News Round Up 2016

I know there are other threads, but wanted to post it here as well. All of the morning magic hour tickets are sold out. I'm stunned. But I don't know why....

ETA: Someone is kicking themselves for not charging $99/ticket.
I'm not surprised. It's a limited event. With only three attractions and an included breakfast they can only hold so many.

Personally I think people are taking things way too seriously. If they are eliminating something to put Muppets in, that is one thing. If they are adding a little something with Sam Eagle into a second story that was not (to my knowledge) previously used, who cares? Might be something to get more kids into the area and get them a bit more education.

Count me in....

I agree. I really liked TFA but agree that it feels sort of like a "Greatest Hits" package. However, I always knew the first Star Wars movie back would be like that.

This movie COULD end up the same way (it takes place at the same time as the original Episode IV), but I hope they know better than to keep recycling the same moments. This one didn't feel like that. I also like that they decided to hold back Darth Vader for now. I say this not knowing that Darth Vader is in the movie, but simply assuming they won't be able to resist the opportunity to stick him in there.

P.T. Barnum had nothing on W.E.Disney - "There's a $79 sucker born every minute."

I might get blasted for saying this, but here it goes...

As one of the big Star Wars fans on this board, I loved TFA and I absolutely loved Rey. She was a great choice to lead the new franchise if that is indeed the way they are going.

That said, I am not a fan of the currently hollywood trend of sticking female leads into franchises/reboots that are mostly a male demographic. Yes, it's great to have strong female characters, but not just for the sake of appealing to a different demo. I don't like that they are doing this back to back with their next movie. I'm sure I'll be hyped when Rouge One comes out, but this trailer didn't impress me very much. Then again, it's just a teaser.

Side note, Ghostbusters looks like it will be awful as well.

The irony is that Hollywood is still a male dominated industry. A film about a strong female directed by a male? Yeah, it kind of feels forced. I like what they did with Rey, though. She's a great lead character.

Regarding Pandora costing 1 billion... WHAT?

As you say the movie could work out different, but I agree with your overall sentiment in as much as I feel that Rey's story felt natural, where this seems to be just trying to hit all the beats of a slew of female led blockbusters. If you saw this trailer in a theater, it wouldn't stand-out against a crop of other Hunger Games-alike movies.

Im all for it as long as it fits the overall story. TFA was a great example of how to successfully do this. Rey just seems like a great fit so far.

Ghostbusters on the other hand is a great example of how to do it wrong.

I think what you are calling 'forced' representation is better than no representation at all.
I don't see how you can say they were 'trying to appeal to a different demo'. There has always been female Star Wars/SciFi fans. And, lets be real... if TFA was a male-led movie, if would have made just as much at the box office (if not more), and the 'demo' that I assume is myself (a 18-40 year old female) would still have seen it.
I, personally, hope this is not a trend. I wouldn't complain if every single movie I saw for the rest of my life had a strong female lead.

I'm not sure. If every movie ends up looking alike, with essentially identikit female lead roles, that's not doing much for anyone. A caricature character is still a caricature.

Ghostbusters doesn't/didn't work for the very simple reason they they replaced 4 male characters with 4 female characters wholesale. They aren't even unique characters.... each one is a direct rip-off on one of the original characters. They would have been better off using 4 original female characters, not a black one, a "sciencey" one, a funny one, and a serious one.

Rey also works because, frankly, I think the fan base has often wondered how the original trilogy would have been different if they had relied on Leia instead of Luke. To a degree, Rey's story explores this, just a generation later. She is not just a female Luke, completely replaced and dropped in, like over in Ghostbusters.

A similar conversation has been had on this thread before, and I can promise it won't go anywhere. Interestingly enough, the previous conversation was about whether or not female characters deserve more time in princess movies (since the representation tends to skew male, despite female leads) even with the strong female demographic.

If women can't lead in traditionally male-centric areas (such as sci-fi), but they also can't lead in traditionally female-centric areas (such as princess films), where then can they lead?
