News Round Up 2016

Just wanted to point out that it's really not so much Paris affecting WDW as it is China. China is the real problem here as they need to cover costs. Chapek apparently wants to lay down the law that he is now in charge and WDW is what is getting the affects of it.

Anyone know what percentage of Shanghai Disneyland that the WDC owns? Just curious.

43% is not on the books in the same ledger as "Disney parks"...

It's a bit of semantics...but Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong aren't the same from an accounting standpoint as the others.

That's why the take over of Paris to a level higher than 49% was a big deal. They can no longer maintain a "distance" on the books.

Just sayin'

Tokyo shouldn't even be included in this Disney doesn't own anything in that park. It's all Oriental Land Company.

Exactly...which is why it isn't.

Neither is Shanghai...so the "it's all China" stance on Disney accounting is not accurate.

Disney parks is a vertical Column on twdc public accounting disclosure. Until 2015 that was only wdw and Anaheim. Now it includes Paris...and still doesn't not include Shanghai.

The money spent on Shanghai is under somekind of "developement" or international wing/partnership. It's apples to accounting oranges as it stands.

Right now you can't really blame Shanghai for cuts in wdw

Oh no, it was like being at the ball, I didn't want it to end. You can always leave early.

The saving grace going in is that there was beer, and a decent selection. We've done a couple of the Star Wars Dessert parties and found the drinks to be "in our opinion" gross and undrinkable. There was no other option so we paid for alcohol we did not drink. We knew here we could just have beer which that is all one of us drank, and the other switched to beer after trying each drink. I loved the drinks, sangria being my least favorite - not my thing anyway - but the other three were yummy.

I was kind of being sarcastic about it being too long-- but there was some serious down time during the meet and greet times, which I wished could have been filled with more numbers or something... maybe it was because I ate too fast and drank too fast....... I would have complained more if I couldn't have...

the performances were great... even though Kanzo dropped a line right in the middle-- pretty badly. he mixed up the names of the two villains he was referencing, and then lost a line-- Facilier picked it up, and all went probably un-noticed to most.

So has anyone seen the SERIOUS acreage with all the new solar panels on them? they are all over outside the parking booths at MK and at Epcot.

about 4 months ago I noticed permit boxes near the tree line on these lots, and now they have been cleared and are nearing completion. Silt fences are still up, area needs to be sodded or landscaped, but looks mostly completed.

I disagree about Shanghai. Disney threw 800 million at China because of cost overruns last year. They never do that kind of thing anywhere else. This is more about China than it is Paris according to everything I'm hearing.

Is this separate from the 20 acre Mickey shaped solar farm?

It's complicated. From what LoL is saying they are separate columns in the ledger. That, somewhat, firewalls Parks and Resorts from losses accrued by Shanghai. They aren't directly responsible for it.

That said, Disney could at the board level decide to cut budgets in Parks and Resorts in order to free up capital of Shanghai.

Yep large solar initiative started last year between a power company and Disney.

Well it's huge--- I wonder how it affects the wetlands / preserved land percentages, since they cleared an amazing amount of woodlands....
