News Round Up 2016

I didn't know Pop was getting gates... will it be all the pools there do you know? Thanks

They had a pretty high profile drowning at I think POP two summers ago. They neither will pay to staff them all the time nor will tolerate the liability of the occasional rare incident moving forward. If I recall...there's a plan to gate all pools.

Really is a shame...as fences will interfere with the designs in many places...like Caribbean or the all stars.

There was a drowning at AoA while lifeguards were on duty and with fences and locking gates in place. Unfortunately, accidents happen regardless. :sad1:

It's just really disappointing. Why not just staff the pool 2-3 extra hours a night rather than lessen guest enjoyment for years and ruining so many views. I know it's the more expensive of the two options by far. But it also does good for other people by giving them more hours. Heck, I'll bet most people would even be ok with taking those hours from the morning and moving them to the evening. I don't ever see a scenario where I wish I could get in the pool on vacation before noon. Eventually making decisions solely based on the bottom dollar will bite Disney in the butt. No one thing by it's self is something to get bent all out of shape about. But when it's 12-15 little things like this a year.. it begins to add up.

The Walt Disney company is NOT about spending more money for labor and hasn't been since the 90's. The last round of "big openings" from 95-98 really showed them the vulnerabilities to labor costs and a lack of quality in the pool.

People around here often discuss this reality without even knowing it...
Anybody want to talk about a "fifth gate"?
Anybody wonder why they "only build DVC"?

There's your easy answers.

Even though they could staff with college programmers - which are laughably subsidized as "interns" under old Clinton era programs- and pay little...they won't do it.

It really is sad. But this management has not shown the wisdom to invest dollars without immediate return. Want an example? How about MGM - which could have been redone 6 years ago using depressed construction costs...but no.

It's the same old pattern...even now as they actually build real additions/investment...much of it will get gobbled up to offset stagnation policies.

Such is life.

It's all so interesting to me about these pool gates and folks feeling like it's ruining their views. Things change over the years as we find out what's safer in most aspects of our worlds like when seat belts were installed in vehicles to make them safer. I'm feeling like fences surrounding pools won't ruin my view unless I allow it to - it will be part of the norm before too long where you'll never see a pool at a hotel without a gate around it. Hey, if it saves one child from drowning, it's all worth it. I personally don't feel that it has anything to do with Disney not wanting to pay more lifeguards - there really is no guarantee against accidents happening like uccats97 said.

However...by that logic...
If the gates are there to prevent accidents, but they still happen...then the only acceptable option would be to close the cement ponds altogether.

More lifeguards would be just as effective.

For me...it's not about gates affecting views...it's that I think you should have 24 hour access. You pay enough.

But in lieu of that...some wdi engineered rock work/hidden gates would be in order.

I'll agree with you here. I don't care about the gates but closing at 9PM? I can see closing at say 11 but 9 is too early.

9 o'clock is frankly unacceptable. It's Orlando, for gods sake. Why have a "pool bar" that is open hours after the pool?

Honestly...it should be an hour or two after last park close...that is more than a fair compromise.

But as an aside - are those hours set? And are they universal?

They shutting the pool at the G-Flo down at 9? How about stormalong?

...you see the roadmap I'm following here...

I think the gates were also added to prevent pool hopping and to keep people who aren't resort guests from using the pools. I do enjoy a lat night swim after returning from the parks, so closing the pool at 9:00 make me sad. Hopefully the times will change with the seasons and crowds.

However pool hopping is legal for a large customer groups except in certain locations/seasons.
