News Round Up 2016

No matter what you can't please anyone...but I do wonder...

Would people be happier if SWL (or any new land or area like Avatar) opened on time (or early) but seeing losses due to budget cuts...or that same area opening way behind but having all the bells and whistles you would expect.

It is always reality that it is somewhere in the middle, and most people lie somewhere in the middle...but the question is which side do you lie closer to (I feel like this is just like a political talk...no matter what people would say you won't convince someone that is on the opposite side - if you want on time and he wants all the bells and whistles, you can't convince him that on time is the best way to do, you just are wasting your breath)...

Well...granted I really care only about wdw...

But I honestly think that trying to deliver a better land within a budget that doesn't balloon to an albatross at the expense of features of a parking garage is 1000% the right call.

Man...that sure was some whiney 5 year old complaining about walking from the parking lot in that article.

It's just a different mentality.

Just wanted to tell disboards owner Pete Werner thanks for the shoutout on the disunplugged podcast today. For those of you who don't listen or watch that podcast he gave a shoutout for how great this thread is on sharing info especially lately on the DHS projects.

I do listen to them now and again, will have to listen to today's for sure. This thread is the one thing that keeps me on my toes ahead of DH who is always trying to beat me to the punch about new things.

Over on wdwmagic Spirit is back and had some thoughts on the changes to imagineering.

He says that Bob Weis getting that job is a good thing and could lead to some better things coming out of imagineering in the future. Kathy Magnum's promotion is also a good thing with her adding DCL and DLP to her profile.

He also goes into say that Bob Chapek head of parks and resorts is pushing imagineering to get their timelines in check and pushing them to get things out sooner than previously thought. However he doesn't think Star Wars at DHS is done in 2018. That of course is yet to be seen.

I found this thread after hearing about it on the podcast. Great info and discussion. I'll head over to check out your TR too, @rteetz :)

Going back to SWL at DL, it looks like a lot of space for just two rides. Yes, I saw the area for expansion, but when I think of TL, FL, or even AL, they all have 3-6 attractions at WDW. Would hope for something a bit more. Heck, some show or something. I know I'll be on the Falcon once but I get real sick on sims as do most of the people I go down with.

I think the idea is the land itself is going to be the attraction. For instance - Harry Potter Diagon Alley opened up and there is only the one ride (Gringotts) and the transport/ride (Hogwarts Express). Heck the first HP land opened with ONE new ride. I know people that have spent hours there and it's not just about the rides. (Heck - most of the lands in IOA have only 2 rides.) Even Carsland is a massive success with just 3 rides - two of which were kiddie rides of which one was closed because it was so disliked. We talked about this in the DHS construction thread - that 2 rides had become the new "standard" with additional "experiences" being part of the attraction. (HP land, Avatar, Fantasyland Expansion, Simpsons.) I expect for instance you'll see some sort of "Jedi hunt" interactive game similar to the one in Adventureland in MK or the wand stuff in HP Land, where kids will use "the force" to activate things.

Anyways, I think that's why they the "SWL further expansion" rumors exist. They are probably keeping the possibility of a third ride in their back pocket in case the popularity of the land is such that it justifies it.

Exactly. I spent 6 hours my first time in Diagon Alley plus 2 with HE and Hogsmeade. And that was before Gringotts opened. Truly an experience.

Wow...they were saying it was gonna open in 2015 as late as the fall?

I think we need to accept that this project is behind schedule...probably in a big way. The whole thing.
I don't know if the project as a whole is behind schedule but I definitely think parts of it are and I think that also depends on the parties they are working with. This isn't a all Disney project it's a joint project with third parties. STK isn't that far away it should be opening in a month or two. Now the Edison for example I think that's way behind schedule but I had heard that was because they decided to work on the tunnels first which are next to the Edison.

Apparently now that Bob Weis got a much bigger job the second HKDL park is now dead. Bob was the project lead on that new park as well but had to shut it down after getting the new job. Hong Kong government is apparently still fighting to get that second park though and they have the land for it but it will sit empty until something is figured out. This second park would have been unique to Hong Kong.

They've kept saying there will only be 2 attractions. I can count 3 in NFL, plus an added M&G, the second spinner to alleviate lines/crowds, plus the play/splash area. We all know this is going to be a smash hit...or at least busy as hell (at the beginning if it sucks) just because of the fanboys. There should be plans for those Jedi hunts, etc. as you said, but there should be something else.

In DHS, if they wanted to, they could use Star Tours as a way to get people into the land. Wouldn't have to, but could use it as an entry point...just change the simulation a little so that it lands on whatever planet they are naming this new land. Now that would be immersive. Again, wouldn't have to be mandatory but it sure as hell would be a cool way "to get there".

I always thought, you could have a train to bring you to a star wars land that is not necessarily attached to the park. Simply call it a space transporter, add some lights during the motion to look like a hyper space journey. Since they are building it attached, it doesn't really need to happen.
