News Round Up 2016

Interesting that they shelved their DTD redo for the most part. You'd think retail is something they would want. I wonder if that has to do with how Disney Sorings is performing?

Until they can manage the parking situation, Disneyland really doesn't need to improve DTD right now. I'm sure it's a goal at some point, but there are some infrastructure developments that need to be made first.

This sounds like it's going to be a cluster on both coasts.

Just looked up what other rides have (as Pirates is a pretty high-capacity ride):

Big Thunder: 1,350 / hour
Splash: 1,080 / hour
Peter Pan: 720 / hour
7 Dwarfs Mine Train: 1,485/hour
Test Track: 1,080 / hour
Tower of Terror: 1,800 / hour
Everest: 1,620 / hour

source: https://crooksinwdw.wordpress.com/2013/12/14/theoreticaloperational-hourly-ride-capacity-at-wdw/ (which I think just links back to somewhere on the DISboards)

Compared to a lot of rides that feels right in line ... so yeah, more would be great if they are super popular, but it isn't like they are way off from other attractions

MiceAge is always always cynical and down. I'm expecting it to be epic. I'm pumped!
If done right it sounds like Alcatraz will be the best ride on the planet. Over 150 AAs? Hourly capacity of course is a problem and I'm sure FP will be the main way to get on this ride.

Disney Springs seems like it may have a hard time getting people to its extremities. It's a significant walk getting to Marketplace from the bus stops now. I suspect that's why they're adding the princesses, to draw people away from spending time only in the core of the property. I have to admit that I didn't love Disney Springs when I just walked quickly through, which admittedly doesn't provide the greatest experience, but did give me a flavor. All the stores were not interesting to me at all (except for Coke... :) ). We quickly retreated to the classic 1970s marketplace; my favorite part of Disney Springs. I want to spend a day there exploring and trying to appreciate the theming, but I understand why they may be having issues. It's not intimate at all and it's huge.

The bathrooms were nice though.

Disneyland's Downtown Disney was already fine. I was never quite sure why they wanted to do a grand reboot in the first place. This also means that they may be able to finally add that three thousand room hotel sometime down the road instead of preserving parking.

More concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout at DCA

That building is so cool. I like the very Joe Rohde touches. It definitely draws on a multitude of styles and techniques. I think it will end up being one of the most interesting in the park, far better than the ugly value version of ToT that had graced the park for years.

I love how it appears that it has a history. The bottom and front of the tower look ancient. Drawing on thousands of years of alien history. Then the power plant jutting up looks more modern. I can't be sure that's what they're going for, but it's classic Joe to add story and detail on how it finally came to be. It's also important to remember that Guardians is not all happy, but a more gritty story. This is representative of that.

Plus the collector is a powerful eccentric individual. That looks like the sort of building he'd live in. ;)
Good question. They might be removed.
Some sources had said it was going to be screens, but they do still appear on the outside of the building. It keeps the option open at the very least.
I like the idea of marvel in the parks but marvel in ToT is just bad. Build new or tear it down why convert?
You know the answer. It's super easy to say they should just tear down and build a new attraction, but why do it? When you have a fine building with a great attraction sitting right there, why destroy it? They could've kept it as is, but then it would've clashed with whatever is put in.

Tokyo Disney Sea did a fabulous redo of this attraction. They of course built it right from the start, but they still used the same basic building design from this DCA tower. What's the difference here? They're using an existing building design and redoing the exterior. Disneyland fans are often far too negative. Give it a chance.

Though that may be my Joe bias coming out...

True, but they don't even have a for sure tenant for the house of blues location. That surprises me.

The way I look at it, ToT is available in it's best domestic incarnation at DHS so it's not that big of a deal to lose it in Cali. If I want to ride Indiana Jones I have to travel to DLR. DLR folks will just have to travel to WDW to ride ToT. They're also getting a new(ish) attraction out of the deal, plus the new land, as you mention.

I didn't really think of it this way until I read your comment. We get the lesser version of Indy (Dinosaur) and they get the lesser version of ToT (GotG).

I see somebody loaded up on happy serum around here before typing!!!

...never any bad news at Disney ;)

But seriously...capacity doesn't bother me on the Star Wars rides if they have good ideas for the ride. "Arm and screen" and dark ride still aren't the right calls for Star Wars...but if that's the choice they need to concentrate on how to build them interesting and not worry about capacity.

Pirate boats and doombuggies hold capacity...and that's not what you want for Star Wars.

Just build something worth the admission price...that's all...all other concerns are secondary.

Well that's the problem with cloning though...isn't it? I mean...Six flags does that and we slay them for ride replication...

I'm worried about the Star Wars rides anyway...I'm worried that they "cut corners" in the end of one version or another.

Marvel in theme parks:

Wandering around DHS and I walked into the store that is opposite corner from Starbucks and inside were Thor, Loki and other Marvel characters. I did not see Iron Man, Spider-Man or overlap but the movie versions of Thor and Loki were there. If someone is there tomorrow or if I get over there I will take pictures and see if there is Marvel signage.

What's this about? Is it ok bc it's inside Starbucks?

To add to the micechat rumors, Martin on wdwmagic says this is the first he's heard of any sort of getting off and getting back on the trackless vehicles in Alcatraz. Many have noted that would be a logistical nightmare and handicap riders might not be able to do that. My guess is that part of the rumor isn't true. I would still be happy with a trackless ride system and over 150 animatronics though.

Yeah that seemed strange. I could see if maybe you get off one vehicle and head for a completely different vehicle maybe (you go through the new environment and videos on the way to another vehicle).

I agree that the "getting on and off" thing sounds like total BS. They're would be almost no way to control ride length - one rider leasurely walking around to observe all the intricacies of the ride would cause disaster...it would be like a single car stopping in the center lane of a highway....a pile-up that would never be able to be reset.

However - I COULD see where they would have the ride vehicles enter individual rooms and stop there - and then the riders have to perform some sort of task (Shooting at Stormtroopers) before moving on. There could be some degree of variability here without letting people off the vehicles. One of the big advantages of the trackless vehicles is allowing the riders to "circle" the room - as can be observed in other trackless vehicle rides.

And as far as the eventual budget cuts (and they always happen when costs over-run) I don't really see them skimping on these two rides. Star Wars is such a potential cash cow for the parks the ONLY way they can screw them up is to make them less than top-of-the-line. I could see them cutting out some of the exterior experiences. (The "Night club" for instance.) But I don't think the rides get skimped on.

I agree with you 100%

Rumor:
On a non Disney forum a poster is saying that his friends on Castaway Cay may not be evacuated due to limited resources. Not sure how true this is, but what is the island like as far as height and the structures on it? Can anyone confirm what Disney is doing for cast members / guest on it?
If I am wrong, my apologies.

I haven't heard or seen anything but I wouldn't be surprised if they have to be evacuated. There isn't anything tall on the island as far as I know. Structures are mostly dining, Cabañas, CM buildings, stuff like that.

All Disney main buildings were built to withstand cat 3 force winds and damage since the 60's...I imagine that castaway has some structures with at least the same capability.

I believe that Disney builds to cat 5 conditions now if rumors are correct...after the 2004/2005 seasons in Florida and the gulf
