News Round Up 2016

What exactly is MLB video. What did they pay for.

It is by far the best streaming capabilities out there

Started by MLB and was owned by the owners but it is used by ESPN for their streaming, the WWE for their network and licensed out to NBA and NHL as well and HBO Go

If Disney wants to do a major streaming initiative this was the company and technology to do it with

Side note - each MLB owner just made $120m from this deal

Bingo. This has .05% to do with the revenue growth potential of MLB.TV. This has 101% to do with providing a platform for Disney to direct sell all its media properties to customers.

If it replaces Mission Space, I am going to be livid:furious: That ride really does fit where it is, and it's a lot of fun still.

I agree that M:S is a good ride as is and shouldn't be touched - feels slightly education though in fact I would say it isn't at all.

I must point out as far as those complaining about IP invading EPCOT, M:S is a movie-tie in ride, it's just a tie-in to a movie that bombed so no-one remembers it: Mission to Mars, A Brian DePalma film after DePalma became terrible.

The one thing I wish they would do is program some degree of randomization to it...make it more interesting as a repeatable ride such that there would be 2 or 3 different endings to the ride.

I agree - some "plusing" to M:S could be good - upgrade technology of screens and adding a random effect or at least a few different "missions" would be cool - but you don't need to get rid of the attraction entirely.

Its a streaming service for MLB games. This is really the future of how sports will be watched since cable is dying.
Hopefully this is a sign that Disney understands that. The ESPN money stream is beginning to evaporate. Hopefully (for this movie/theme park fan's sake) they can pivot off of ESPN and keep trucking along.

So, if I'm reading this right about the PinQuest...

Initial game purchase: $14.99
Clue cards (6): 9.99 EACH
Final pin: 4.99

$80 plus tax, essentially. It's basically Sorcerers at an upcharge.

I thought this article from a couple months ago really described the MLB product well and Disney's interest.

That was my thought exactly, but I'm curious as to how "special" and "limited" the pins are.

Using their color coded price matching system, there are pins in the park for about $13-$14.

$10 for each pin almost seems like a steal if they are actually limited (750 - 1500).

I'm not really into pin collecting, but I can see people eating this up.

Except you end up with pins, instead of just cards (although SOTMK cards are awesome). I can definitely see myself doing this - it's money I would probably spend on pins and a lanyard anyway, and you're not paying anything over and above retail for what you get. The limited nature is appealing as well, although I don't recall reading if they are 'limited edition' or 'limited release'.

MLB's streaming games. Probably not a bad purchase but I don't know how popular it is. It's probably highly dependent on cord cutters and transplants. I'm not sure if blackout rules still apply or not, but if they do it's a kinda narrow market.
Currently blackout rules do apply. One of the few reasons we still have cable. Disney may aim to change that though, they have the muscle to push it through, and then they can start their own Disney channel subscription. At that point they can pull away from cable completely and likely make money off it. Pays to be the first one out.

The rockwork does look stunning. It will be a really impressive area for sure. I'm just concerned about the maintenance that this rockwork is going to require, but I guess they took that into account.

Knowing they have NHL and HBO in the same umbrella makes it a smart purchase. Getting the MLB to reform their blackout rules might be more difficult but if anyone can do it, it's TWDC.

I would compare it to carsland. It's been what four or so years since that opened.

Yeah, but there's also two main differences between those two: the weather in California is a lot drier than in Florida, and Pandora has lots of fake vegetation. It should take a while before the paint starts to fade away, but still, hopefully it won't be too difficult to maintain.
