News Round Up 2016

Disney publishes a "signature" list...and Cinderella's ain't on it.

Hmmm..you are right - I just looked at the lists and they don't consider it on the "Signature" list. Pretty lame that Le Cellier is though - we haven't been back there since they made THAT particular move. (Yachtsman's is 10 times better than Le Cellier and within walking distance of it.) Of course, Fulton's is on the "Signature" list too, which is a pretty big joke.

I know...which is why none of us should use such stupid terminology.

It wasn't originally...but now it's tied dining credits anyway...which is has jumped the shark anyway.

The dining plan is gonna sputter out and be replaced in a few years anyway...reading the tea leaves there.

Please no political discussion.

It will have to impact prices, staffing, and new builds in DL. Do CM's in DL and WDW work on separate contracts or are they paid the same?

NY passed it - but only in NYC - upstate NY is going to $12.50 an hour.

DL and WDW have separate contracts.

And don't worry, Disney will have no problem passing it on to the consumer.

And I will refrain from political discussion.

As an aside...

I just completed one of the resort surveys for the first time in years...and here were the most interesting things on the "axe list"

1. Mini golf
2. Greeters at resorts
3. Visa

The visa questions - as previously reported - were very interesting.

"What would you do if visa was no longer accepted"?

My response: "tell my kids about how I USED to go to Disney parks"

Terminal fees...that's what the stockholders want to dicker with for profits?

Good job, Bob.

After lunch...float another billion to the Chinese government, huh?

I was asked the same questions. However, I did use a Visa. I had heard someone was asked about American Express. So, I guess they just ask about whatever card you used. I got a survey, or two, for everything we did it seemed, ie resort, spa, Star Wars dessert party, dining.

I had the spa too but I ignored Those...

I have no doubt that my credit questions were tailored to my answers as yours were...

But it's the same thing...they don't want terminal charges. It could be the stupidity of things like the "Disney vacation account"...
That's dumb...giving them your money to play with with no benefit.

But I suspect in the end it's to gain empirical data to negotiate those fees down...as my esteemed colleague has suggested prior.

VISA: My Disney Visa points & financing have a substantial impact on my travel plans. I'm not interested in ever carrying an American Express card.

Minimum Wage: Disney will manage just fine, especially in California. A higher wage will lead to more local visitors having funds to spend in the parks. This will probably be a big win for those parks.

If there were substantial benefits (above and beyond my Disney Visa), then I might consider a branded Disney card that didn't carry a VISA/MC/AMEX logo at all. The benefits would have to be amazing, though.

Concept is concept... even the last of the NFL concept images don't match reality. Particularly around layout and proportions... showing "dead" space next to the expansion isn't exciting. Showing a "hint" of Star Wars land is.

All I'm saying is there is an equal chance this means something or means nothing.
I have to admit it, I am shocked at the play this is getting at the other site(mdwmagic) you would think this art means the end of the world.

It could mean anything:
1) saving cost on the sign art and putting up a less idealistic view
2) cost cutting has gotten more rampant - the popular thought
3) I do like the notion one person raised, what if TSL got moved to LMA area, thus the attachment ties into the expected area for SWL. Wonder if that means Animation area and or behind TSMM will be phase three?

Point is, until we see some clear plans, or building moves, I won't panic just yet. I also don't think the new art means we are cost cutting the heck out of TSL either.

That's true. However, lately it seems like Disney doesn't want to rely so much on local visitors anymore at the DLR. DL will remain a locals park for quite a while, but they've being trying to become more of a destination for people who actually spend money on hotel rooms, merchandise and food, so we'll see how well that results.

This one is much more complex than most commenters (anywhere) understand. There has to be an element of extra cost obviously, but economist can't actually agree on what the impact of minimum wage increases is. Well, to be fair economists can't agree on much. Then there's the question of how is actually impacted. In parts of CA it's a small portion who are actually below the $15 threshold whereas other parts of the State it's something like 40% of the population. So the impact will be very different geographically.

Then there's the question of how companies choose to handle the cost. Is it a straight pass through? Do they absorb some and pass through the rest? That depends on numerous factors like price sensitivity of the product (none in Disney's case it seems) and what portion of their employees are affected.

Long story short, Disney could probably absorb this additional cost quite easily just based on their recent ticket price increases. However, given the extraordinary elasticity of the pricing for their themeparks, they'll probably use it as an excuse for another round of price hikes.

Here's the problem with saying it's not a Zoo. When you get there the first thing you can do is look at animal exhibits. Then you're given lots of ecological information, encouraged to go on a Safari and wander round looking at yet more animals or hop on a train and go pet animals. Which I'll be generous and call "zoolike".

Yes there are other things to do, but a lot of people's reaction to this will be "Hey I thought you said this wasn't a zoo!"

It's a zoo with extras. They need to own that because people who aren't into animals are going to struggle to occupy themselves in that park.

Exactly. It may be nit picky, but it's probably more accurate to say "it's not just a zoo" than to say "it's not a zoo".
