News Round Up 2016

News

It appears Disney is running surveys that are asking guests how they would feel of Disney charged a resort fee of $15 for things like wifi, magical express, and children's activities. They also asked if the guest was aware off site hotels already do this.
Charging for WiFi what year is this? 2005?

Seriously talk about proposing some penny pinching....

Yep, I posted this in it's own thread. I also read that a lot of dining locations prices also went up.

Well, I guess I need to rebudget the food portion of our upcoming trip. Not happy.

And if that survey is true, I think it's ridiculous to charge more for the perks of staying on site.

Lastly, Rteetz, I think you do an amazing job on this board. It's the first one I come to every single day, and often the only one I look at. Keep posting your articles!

The survey mentions a $350/night room. I think that is the key point of the survey. They could have left out the room rate portion and still ask the question about a resort fee.

Not that anything will come of this survey, but I don't think it indicates by itself a price increase to the customer. It's simply a way to re-establish the price in a way that looks for palatable in marketing materials. As mentioned by someone else, it also can skirt a tax issue.
In a nutshell if your room rate is now $400, you'd expect to see it change to $385 plus a $15 resort fee.

In my opinion its more voodoo accounting and price marketing.

A resort fee would be a detriment to Disney.

Today you pay $350 which is high for what you get. But you get ME, free parking, extra magic hours, free shipping to hotel, etc. We all know we are over paying, but it's inherently "worth it".

Add on a resort fee to cover those things. $15! Heck yeah I'd pay that! But wait - you're telling me the room is $350 and I'm paying only $15 for the things that make it worth $350? The room is a ripoff!!!

Hmm. Ok. Let's go the other way. My room is $195 (not bad. It's convenient on property $30 more than offsite - I can hang!). A resort fee of $170 per night for ME, EMH, wifi, shipping?????? What a fricken JOKE! No way I'm playing that game. Those things aren't worth that!

This is a case where the whole is better than the pieces. If you separate them out you can't win. Better to play the shell game and say look at the combined value! Yea it's a lot but you get so much! It's part of the magic...
My question is....why not just up the price by $15 and not say anything about it? Making people pay an extra fee for all the things that used to be free will only upset the masses.

Because the fee is, for all intents and purposes, hidden. It seems better to pay $385 for a room and then find out there's a surcharge than to pay $400.

Agreed. That is their best option here. With the dynamic hotel pricing its not like anyone else will see it.

It's actually a really common practice in the tourism industry. Vegas, New York, beach resorts... Many are still charging for Wifi. For me the real problem here is the lower value I'm getting for an already overpriced hotel room. But hey, we've got purple bands.

...and that is why you ask a question like that in a survey. Some accountant said, "hey lets just call it a resort fee". Someone in operations said, "dude, that'd be a nightmare on the front lines". Then someone suggests posing the question in survey to gauge public reaction on the topic and act according to the info.
The survey exists, because hopefully it can give them some actionable intelligence.

Again, I'm not sure this survey really exists...seems a bit phony to me...but hey...whatever. Stupid idea to tack on fees to something you market as a HUGE benefit for staying on property.

So anyway... I've heard Superhero Headquarters is closing at DL and Marvel characters are moving to DCA. Any rumors on what's coming to Innovations? It's kind of suspiscious that they are closing the thing right after they opened it.

Yes the characters are moving to DCA. The only thing Ive heard is a possible expansion of launch bay.
