I am wondering if anyone can lend any advice. I've been to NL a bunch of times and love it there. We have family, and it's just a nice relaxing time! My husband believes that there is nothing to do there and has refused to go in the past so my kids and I hoped in my parents truck and we all drove through Port Aux Basques. A LOT OF DRIVING. It was nice, but I don't want to do it again.
DH has agreed to consider a summer trip with our new tent trailer through Argentia. I don't want to tell him the cost of the ferry. We will really need the DLX Berth cabin with the 2 kids (5 and 6) for such a long fery ride. Total comes to $1418. Not including gas. BUT when we get there we park the tent trailer at my aunt and uncles (Burin). Whale watching, DH can go fishing with my uncle, nature walks, evening jigs, I want to go SO bad. It's just SO peaceful there. I don't get like this except for at Disney (but it's very fast paced in Disney). I LOVE NL, SO... after all this... is there ANY way to cut down the cost of the ferry???? Any way to get discounts?? That's how much our flights cost to Disney!! :(
I really want to bring the kids whale watching and to St Pierre. I've never been up north east to the park up there.

It's a lot of money to spend. As my husband would say, "a lot of money to spend on what?"
Darn gas prices. :surfweb:

Hi there,I am from NL and live in St.Johns..The Ferry is crazy expensive but you are correct its a beautiful, peaceful place to visit or live:goodvibes

I don't know of any discounts on the ferry but i will check around for u and post if i find out anything, I work at a hotel in the city and we have people staying with us from all over the world but especially from Nova scotia and New brunswick,a lot of our regulars are truck drivers who use the ferry on a weekly basis they should know if there are any discounts available...I will ask them and let u know..

There is lots to do here, what exactly will depend on where u are staying, lots of opportunities for fishing and outdoor activities wherever u are and of course the city offers the same sort of things any city offers just depends what u are interested in..it is the oldest city in North America..lol little plug for st.johns, love it here..I am actually from the other end of the island originally, beautiful little town as well..tell hubby theres lots to do and can be very relaxing if thats what you want..

Hi there,

We live near St. John's as well. :thumbsup2

We are brits that originally emigrated here nearly 3 years ago and love it!

Winters can be a drag but I LOVE the summers, especially the whales!

Good Luck with your trip planning. :woohoo:

That is so great of you, thank you very much. I priced out the ferry, with out 10 ft tent trailer to Argentia with a dlx berth (really isnt THAT much more and teh space is needed with 2 kids) and it comes in around $1400. My husband ....:scared1:....... lol That's almost our flights from Moncton to Orlando. There is no way he will agree to those prices. Shame. :(
I've been to NL a bunch of times. Last trip was the best. My Uncle arranged a fishing boat to bring us all Jiggin for Cod. I think I was born to be on a fishing boat, I LOVED it. It was SO peaceful. We tried to get out whale watching, but I guess it pays to go Obrians...lol Water was so choppy on our little boat we couldnt even leave the cove.
I love StJohns too! I bought my kids the alphabet book for NL before we left and we (my uncle) tried to get as much of the items in the book. Had Toutons...my son LOVES them. :) Saw where the Regatta takes place. They love love love 'Jellybean houses" they call them. I loved the little handmade mailboxes everyone seems to have toll painted of the jellybean row. So cute!!
I really want to bring the kids to St Pierre as I went as a child and have fond memories. So if you find any discounts for the ferry, I'd be SO grateful!!!

Yeah, winters are a drag no matter where ya are in the Maritimes. Here in Moncton NB we get storms coming up from NY and storms from Ontario.... generally they collide over top of us. This year has been pretty famous for a long and slow winter.
I love the whales as well! My uncle would always bring us out whale watching. Best was out of Trinity on a zodiac. My son would hate it, the fishing boat mentioned above was enough for him. He's not a motion sort of fellow. :)
Where in the UK are you guys from? I am planning a trip for June of next year into London for a few days, training it up to Edinburgh and ultimately Inverness. I'm originally MacBeath, now a McIntosh and have been tracing our ancestory which..obviously...leads to Scotland. :) Luckily, both families were not terribly far from one another. This is my dream trip, never been to Europe...or out of North America for that matter (does St Pierre and Michelon count?? lol)
Of course, NB has a lot of the same as NL, we have the whales, we have the nature, we have the coast, we have a lot that can be done there..true.. so DH's point is valid.
Oh, on the topic of UK, any advice on saving money for a family of 4. Im keeping track of flights right now based on flights this june. Right now the cheapest is with Icelandair for $3300 for 4. I was given great advice to snatch up train tickets 3 months prior to date needed (when they are released). So far seems like 55 pounds for all 4 of us if I play my cards right this time next year. (one way).
Beyond this, I have much to learn. It's very expensive..i shouldnt complain about NL. lol My biggest fear are hotels...I wnt a nice one that isn't an arm and a leg, that will sleep all 4 of us. 3 nights in London, rest in Scotland except for the night before we fly home.
Sorry, Im rambling. lol When I can grab a Brit's ear, i tend to do so.

Oh no, I answered this thread a few days ago but I guess my reply never got posted. :confused3

I know the site froze on my laptop and I then guess it messed everything-up.

Can't remember what I wrote now. :sad2:

But I am here and we love it!

As for London, really can't be much help as we have never stayed there overnight. When we lived in the UK we were only a 30 min train journey outside of London.

:surfweb:Trying to remember what else.....

Nope, nothing much there , oh have you considered staying on the outskirts of the city, in a commuter town? Accomodation may be cheaper and train travel into London after 10am is cheaper as well because its when all the commuters are at work!

Anything else please ask and I will try and help!

Hi there
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you..After speaking to several of the regulars who stay at the hotel from Nova Scotia,i don't think there are any discounts available on the ferry or at least none that anyone is aware of.

I know you don't want to do the drive from Port aux Basque but it is nearly half the cost to there as Argentia..

Wish i could have been more help..Good luck with your trip.
