After several years of thinking about it and lurking around the Boards, DH and I finally took the plunge the other night and purchased 250 pts. at SSR:yay: We are thrilled, however, I am starting to doubt that we got the best deal possible so I'm looking for help before we sign the papers.

We got the friends and family referral incentive since I had reached out to my guide before the encentive expired. So we paid $91 ppt. We usually vacation in January so I asked for and got a Sept UY. I asked for 2008 points and was told that was not possible. The only thing that might be possible (he'd have to check) was if I took a Dec UY, but I'd have to use before Dec-with no possibility of banking-so I declined. After reading some of the posts here, it appears this is not the case. Am I correct?:confused3

I don't want what I am not entitled to, but I do not want to have that feeling that I could have done better.

Any thoughts, advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can purchase SSR on the resale market for significantly less.

I agree with DVC Mike. If you are in no rush, you can definitely get a SSR contract for close to $20.00 less per point on the resale market. For 250 points, that is close to $5000.00 in savings.

Granted, it would take about 2 months before you were owners and if you need financing, it may not be as easy via resale, but I would check it out before deciding.

Right now, there are plenty of SSR contracts, with Sept UY, for sale at the TSS in the high 60's, low 70's per point.

Good luck!

If you can get an October or December use year with 2008 points, then that would definitely sweeten the deal as those 2008 points would be worth $2,500 if you figure a rental rate of $10 a point. I'd try to talk them into banking them for you as part of the deal of buying. They might do it. ;)

2008 points would definitely make it more in line with what you could buy SSR for resale. Most SSR resale contracts won't have 2008 points (the ones that I've looked at anyway). And some of the SSR resale contracts don't even have 2009 points. Now, if you found a "loaded" resale SSR contract with banked points, then that's a different story.

Unless you have a compelling reason to buy direct (CM discount, financing or immediate need of points) there are MUCH better deals, particularly on SSR, available on the resale market.

Check out the link at the top of this page. There are several SSR contracts listed. SSR contracts are listed in the $70/pt range so you could save a couple thousand dollars buy buying resale.

The biggest disadvantage to buying resale is the waiting. The whole process from offer to booking a reservation can take a few months. If you are wanting to plan a vacation for early next year and do not have time to wait, then you would probably want to spend the extra money and buy direct.

Good Luck with your purchase and :welcome:.

If you believe that you will always travel in January, then a December UY will work for you as well, getting you the 2008 points.

Unless you are planning to travel this coming January 2010, you may want to check out the resale market. Perhaps you can find a loaded contract with the same or close to the same amount of points and the right UY. It can't hurt to look.

I agree with posters here re buying SSR on resale market.

Also, I don't see benefit in having September UY unless you plan to travel Sept, Oct, Nov & Dec as well.....the main idea behind UY is to pick UY where your travel would occur within first 8 months of that UY. If you feel that you will probably mostly travel during January choosing December UY is probably a better choice. Guide is correct that you can no longer receive 2008 UY points for September on direct purchase through Disney now since it's now 2009 Use Year for Sept and Sept's 2008 UY is over ( however, you may be able to find SSR resale contract which has 2008 UY points banked into 2009 UY :) ). If you choose & purchase October or December UY before October and December respectively then you should get 2008 UY points and although the banking deadline has passed ( May 31 for Oct and July 31 for Dec ) if you purchased directly through Disney they can usually work some magic for you and they may possibly allow you to bank 2008 UY points - - it doesn't hurt to ask and if guide says no ask to consult supervisor on this. At the very worst you can try to rent out 2008 UY points ( you may have to offer the points at lower price per pt than what is typically average rental price because it is so close to end of 2008 UY for October (Sept 31) and even December (Nov 30) or probably easier than renting would be to transfer them to another DVC member or deposit them into RCI for a future trip via their offerings, if I remember correctly then that travel via RCI could take place within 24 mos of deposit but confirm this with guide or with others here on DIS who have used their points with RCI.

Good Luck & Best wishes :goodvibes

I have added on 3 times through Disney. On two of them, I was past the 8 month banking window and both times they banked them for me with no problem.

how safe and easy is it to buy a resale. i saw some really good deals on that timeshare website that you can get to from here. my husband and i are trying to decide if the dvc is right for us. we are in neg to buy 160 pts at bay lake for $101 pp. is this a good deal?

In majority of cases very safe and easy when you are dealing with an experienced, reputable resale agency who regularly handle DVC contracts. And the $ savings can often be substantial over buying directly through Disney and you can by a contract via resale with less than 160 pts minimum or whatever the current minimum buy-in directly through Disney currently is set at. Your membership is not treated any differently if you buy on the resale market so no worries there. The board sponsor, The Timeshare Store (click on banner at top of page to go to their DVC resale listings ) is excellent and knowledgeable for DVC resale contracts; myself and many others who post here have bought and sold contracts through them. There are some other resale agencies but I haven't dealt with any other than TTS.

Good luck :goodvibes

The Timeshare Store (sponsor of this board) has been great to work with - we have sold multiple contracts through them and bought one. We've owned up to 550 DVC points through the years - now we're down to just 155 at SSR. We bought 100 points of those SSR points from the Timeshare Store back in February - got a great deal ($71 a point). :)

We just got our vacation club, wish I would have found this thread before - good advice!

Call a guide who can tell you what the latest incentives are. They just changed recently, so I'm not sure what they are right now. If you don't already have a guide, there is a thread on the DVC Mousecellaneous board, I believe, that shows who has which guide, etc.
