Hi - how did I not even know about this board...I am really dedicated to losing weight this year. Both DH and I are obese and pretty much couch potatoes....

My goal is: Walk at least 30 min on the treadmill daily

Certainly sounds simple enough but I have struggled in the past....have increased my vegetable intake and been actively making healthier food choices the last few days - dinners have included grilled steelhead trout and mixed veggies, grilled chicken with 1 cup brown rice and peas, lunches: lunches - salads with protein: grilled chicken, hummus, left over fish....

have joined a group of friends on facebook weight loss support group kinda thing - we weigh in Wednesdays - figure I need to own it and it helps me to be accountable

Here I just joined the Jan exercise challenge for 930 minutes...

What else should I be doing? Any tips, suggestions, etc?

Ist congratulations you are on the correct track.

Log you food intake noting serving sizes - measuring if you have to at first.

Learn seriving sizes - 1 cup of rice is about 2 servings. Weight Watchers is a great place to learn or the Am Diabetics Society. I am a marahton runner and IM athlete and I use the ADA serving guidelines as the base of my diet planning. Definitely would consider a trip toa dietician

Eat 6 smaller meals a day Breakfast is you most important followed by snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack

Each meal should have a protein -

Plan you diet - Shop the perimter of the store, and avoid the middle

10 glasses of water a day

Make you walks so you could barely carry a conversation and work them up to an hour

sounds like you have already taken steps in the right direction......another way is to focus on one change at a time, and when that action seems normal and routine then take on another.

reward yourself along the way..maybe after the first 5 lbs you get a pedicure, etc. for most it's not so overwhelming to make smaller mini-goals. losing 5 lbs -- 4 times is the same as losing 20 lbs.

and, most of all....
:welcome: to WISH

we have a "walk to Disney Challenge " going ... feel free to drop by... would work great with your goal to walk 30 minutes a day.........

Remember that if you fall off the wagon one meal/one snack - don't let that rule the rest of your meals for that day. Just get right back on track. Own up and accept the bad choice and reward it with good choice and show who is in charge.

Good Luck

Hi and :welcome: to WISH!

Come and join us in the new BL9 Challenge. It's a great way to get started and the weekly WI really helps.

Are you tracking your calories? If not, Sparkpeople is free and if you set it to let you enter your own food (vs a mealplan they give you) it's wonderful. It's one of the best ways to make sure your eating the right amount!

OP here - thanks for the tips, and encouragement! I am really pumped up!

Glad you are going for it! You can do this.

In addition to what has been offered, I'll add to do your best to think differently. Don't think in terms of the "D" word. Rather, think of it as doing healthing things and making healthy choices for YOU. Find some fun and enjoy. Make some smaller goals that you know you can achieve.

I look forward to hearing of your success!

Thank you Tiger Lily!

I was thinking yesterday that the long time W.I.S.H regulars have probably seen quite an influx of new posters at resolution time each year...I know lots of people begin a lifestyle change and stumble and I expect to stumble but the key for me is to remember that each day offers me a clean slate! Every day I have the opportunity to move more, eat better than the day before....

I don't recall if I mentioned before, I am wearing my pedometer (well my ipod nano has a pedometer application) and enjoying seeing my step count progress...

Thanks for the good vibes and support!

We all stumble at some point. But that's why we are here, to help each other back up.
