Hi there,
I have been lurking around the boards for a while now and have been loving all of the great information and tips that everyone has offered! My husband and I are planning a surprise vacation for our boys for January 09.

We are planning on staying at Hojo's for a week from January 17-24 and I am wondering what the we can expect weather wise. Mainly I'm wondering if it's realistic to expect to be able to use the outdoor pool while we're there.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

It will vary but it will be chilly and by the time night falls it will be cold. Honestly January after the holiday rush is one of my favorite times to enjoy DLR. The nights are cold but the parks are as empty as you will find throughout the year.

:welcome:

I talked to Lorealle at HoJo about a week or so ago and she told me that their pools are all heated :woohoo: . And there is just something about swimming outside in the pool underneath the stars in January;) . Remember too that no matter how cool it is down there in January, it will still be warmer than what it is at home:yay:

davidsprincess stole my answer. :) Might be cold for some, but balmy for others! :)

I was there this year Jan 25/26, and it was chilly and a bit rainy, but nothing too bad. I would have considered swimming if I weren't so focused on getting all from the parks that I could get. And I'm only as far north as Tacoma WA! :goodvibes

Well, I'm from southern AZ, and the thought of swimming outdoors in January made my blood freeze. :lmao: But then, I need a sweater if it gets below 75, so don't take my advice.

Welcome!

I hope you have a wonderful time planning and trying to keep the secret! :lmao: I just can't control myself enough to do the secret thing! :)

Have fun planning.

I was in DL Jan 25 thru Jan 31. On the 27th it turned dead nasty!! It was raining side ways. Into the stores!

I had asked what to wear and was told layers under a sweat shirt. I am so glad I packed 2 sweat shirts but I just had to buy a winter coat!! And my Dh and Dd used the Sweat shirts under their coats. We went back to the hotel midday but it was to thaw out and get warm again! Oh and take good gloves not the 2 for $1.00 Magic Gloves the wind just whipped thru those.

I knew I should have packed for the worst, because we needed everything!!

If you pack for the worst and don't needed it, then great you will enjoy any mild weather even more!!!

Thank you all for the help! I'm certain it will feel far warmer than the last Alberta winter we had, that's for certain!

Good time to go to DL. Usually that time of the year is DL's low peak...after the holiday, the kids are back in school and the weather is cold. Good choice!

We went on a cruise out of Cali on Jan 20th this year and the weather to us was beautiful, we are from Saskatchewan. There were a lot of locals on that trip and they said it was really cold. It was actually really funny, we were the only ones in the hot tub on sail away day and we got a lot of crazy looks but to us, it was beautiful weather for a hot tub!

Some people think low crowds are the best time to go. I personally am not one of them. Low crowds means minimal entertainment and rides down for refurb. If the OP is aware of this then it may be a good time for her family to visit.

The OP should see "What You Should Know About Off-Season at DLR" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=18462889

The weather down there is so weird! I went Jan 13-17 last year and it was freezing to everyone in my party, and we're the kind of people use to the snow. A week later I went back down and it was nice and sunny. You just never know what you are going to get.

The times I've been in January or February the weather is usually pretty nice in the middle of the day, but chilly in the mornings and evenings.

The pools at Hojo's are COLD... I don't know how much they "heat" them, but it was super cold over Thanksgiving week when we were there last. The kiddie pool was colder than the big one... I wanted to spend my time in the hot tub while my son swam, but he kept calling me over, and there was no way I was getting close to the kids pool or fountains!!! hahaha I had to keep going back to the hot tub to warm up after a while.

Oh, and it is generally quite a bit warmer out in November than it is in January.
