Hello,

I am a newbie to the wish boards. I have been reading through the posts and have been greatly encouraged by all the positive and supportive thoughts.

I am 33 yrs old , weigh 200 lbs :(, have two DD 8 and 10, and have been married for 14 years. I became this over weight after my 2nd baby. It was like my metabolism just stopped. I have an awesome sweet tooth, and I have been recently diagnosed with thyroid trouble. However the meds they put me made me feel 300 x worse than before I knew I had the problem, so I stop taking them.

Anyways what plan would you recommend for me to start with? Is there any one else out there with thyroid trouble that has found something that has helped them?

Again I looked forward to your comments, and hope I can muster the motivation to start a program and stay focused.

samsid99 - welcome to WISH!! As you have been reading, this is a wonderful place for encouragement and support.

As another poster mentioned in a previous post, the plan that will work is the one that you believe in. Whatever program you pick, it should be one that you can live with for good. Not just a vehicle to take off a few pounds and go back to eating the way you were before.

You have to ask yourself if you are willing to give up give up certain carbs (South Beach/Atkins), count points (Weight Watchers), or even do your own thing modifying your eating habits.

I am hesitant to recommend any specific plan to you because I don't know what your preferences are. I have a poll in this board asking WISHers which program they are on. If you do a search under my username, you can find it and see what's the most popular around these parts.

I wish you all the success in the world in chosing and sticking to a program that I hope will include some exercise too. Please let us know what you decide to do as we'd love to cheer you on!! :wave2:

Samsid99,

Hi and WELCOME TO THE WISH BOARDS!:wave2:

I need to voice my concern secondary to your going off your medications for your thyroid disorder - this can be dangerous! I hope you have discussed indepth this choice with your doctor.

As far as a eating plan is concerned - you need to choose a plan you can stick w/for life - not just a quick fix. But the WISH board is a wonderful place to come and get information, ideas and encouragement! I hope whatever plan you choose you have sucess w/it and you continue to join us on this board!

I'm new here too... Welcome! We seem to have a lot in common! I'm also 33, have some weight I would like to get rid of, have thyroid issues, and a major sweet tooth!

I just started WW this week and also joined Curves to finally get some exercise. (I've done WW before and it works for me - as long as I stick with it!) I tried South Beach, but I just couldn't do it for very long. I like WW because I can still have the foods I like (bread, pasta, etc.), just not as much of them. You will need to research and figure out what will work for you for the long haul - not just for a quick fix.

About the thyroid... Please talk to your doctor about how the meds affected you. It seems to be a very tricky thing, and a lot of times they will need to adjust them a few times before they get just the right dosage. Luckily, mine has been adjusted only once since my diagnosis, but I have 2 friends that had to work with a few different dosages before they got it right.

Good luck! You can do it!

Hi newbie,

Welcome,
Glad you are joining us here. I have to agree with yasuern about the thyroid meds. Go tell your Dr. that they were not agreeing with you. Maybe they can reduce the level of the doseage to start with. Its very dangerous to mess with your thyroid. Can cause long term effects to heart & kidneys. Please request a sit down meeting with him or her.

Next some of us here have tried different things that didn't work. And moved on to other plans. I agree it should be a lifetime goal and plan. It may be trial and error to find the one that you like and can stay with.

We are here for moral support... You can do it!!! The first step is making the challenge. Good Luck

I was recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism as well. The meds made me feel horrible the first few days but then seemed to level off. My Doctor changed my dosage after a month - upping it just a bit. I agree that you should NOT stop taking your meds without talking to your doctor or at least get a 2nd opinion from a specialist (Endocrinologist). Within the first 3 weeks of thyroid meds I lost almost 5 lbs totally without trying - meaning I did not alter my diet at all. I know that if I take up the exercise like I need to (once my sprained ankle is healed) then I should finally be able to shed my baby weight from my youngest DD (who is almost 6!).

Good luck and talk to your doctor!!!
