I am taking my DW to New York next April and we will be seeing Mary Poppins. I have never been and I would like a nice place to have dinner before the show. Any suggestions?
A good place for Italian -- not overly touristy -- is Osteria al Doge on 44th near 6th Ave. http://www.osteria-doge.com/
Across the street is another good Italian place -- though I like Osteria better -- called Trattoria Dopo Teatro. http://www.dopoteatro.com/home.html Ask for a table in the "secret garden" for something a bit different.
That was a memorable lunch, both for the food, but mostly for the company. I do have to say, I've been craving another turkey club from there. It was soooo good.
Similar to Carmine's is Tony's di Napoli. We prefer the latter mostly because we've gone to their upper East side location many times for Easter. The thing to remember with these particular Italian restaurants is that they're loud, they're busy and the tables are very close together.

With literally thousands of restaurants in NYC, it is hard to recommend without knowing exactly what you are looking for. Are you hoping for somewhere with a quick bite to eat, somewhere fancy, somewhere less expensive, somewhere with a "name brand" - i.e. Bobby Flay's (love Bar Americain)? Cuisine type? DW&I have been to quite a few places in NY, but instead of listening them all, it would be great to know what you are thinking.
If you are looking for pre dinner theater Mulberry Street is located in Little Italy which is downtown Manhattan and is nowhere nears Time Square (which is in midtown). I'm not saying this place is not worth going to I am just saying it is not close to Time Square or the theator district. You would have to take a cab or the subway to get to the theator district from here
if u plan on getting there and eating a little bit before the show Southern Hospitality was my favorite!!!! the best BBQ ever! and its owned by Justin Timberlake not crowded at all (thats because we ate at 4:30-5:00)
we had plenty of time to eat and get to our show. its about a 5-10 minute taxi ride from time sq http://www.southernhospitalitybbq.com/
