I know this is early, but we just got back from the 4th and decided to book for New Year's Eve. We're tenatively staying at the Contemporary (short walk to MK) but have a question before we make the final decision. We saw fireworks at Epcot and MGM for the 4th. Epcot was FAR better than MGM. Can anyone tell me which is better for New Year's; MK or Epcot?

I am also curious to hear about New Year's Eve. Have never been, but was thinking about it this year.

Kinda depends on whether you like Illuminations or Wishes better. This past NYE, MK showed Wishes at 9:00 p.m. and then their old fireworks show (can't remember the name already) at midnight). Both were spectacular. We loved them. (Watched Wishes from the deck at the Contemporary after dinner at Chef Mickey's and the midnight show from our balcony at the Polynesian.) The NYE Illuminations is also spectacular (better even than the normal version). But similar.

One thing to take into consideration, though, is the crowds. If you're going into MK, plan on going at park opening on NYE and staying ALL DAY. The park will close. (This past year, I think it was closed by 10:00 a.m.) Epcot is more flexible usually, though it has been known to close, just not as frequently or as early.

We don't usually do a park on NYE when we go. We just do other things all day. (Went miniature golfing this past year. We wished we had planned a day in the water parks. It was HOT!) Then we book PS's someplace fun and enjoy a late dinner, go back to our resort and watch the fireworks from there. (We try to stay at a resort with fireworks views for NYE.) But we have a 9 year old, and staying in any park for more than 12 hours would not be a happy way to start any new year. It might be fun under different circumstances.

I would choose by whichever is your favorite park.
and keep inmind transportation beack to your resort.
if you are going to MK, stay at a MK resort ...
if you are going to Epcot, stay in an Epcot resort.

i wouldnt want to have to deal with buses and huge crowds after a very long day in the park, it could take hours to get back to your resort

We saw NYE fireworks at Disney Studios this past NYE and they were great. The entire evening was a real treat and I'd go back there in a minute. We had a ball.

We went this past New Year's and decided on EPCOT for our park for the day. We arrived about 9:30 and stayed for the duration. We had never been before, but I was happy with our choice. When they started to give out noise makers, etc. and the crowd got a little rowdy, we went from WS to FW (two DDs were with us, youngest one is 6). It was really quiet over there and we did several attractions with no waits at all. Illuminations was awesome, not the same show. The neatest part was the playing of each countries national anthem and a separate fireworks show as each country celebrated the arrival of midnight around the globe. If we go again, we will probably return to EPCOT!
