We are going for the first time to WDW for New Year's Eve. (We are Disney veterans...DVC, AP, MNSSHP, and MVMCP, etc.). We were thinking about doing Epcot on the 30th (our first day...hoping to still get Chip and Dale magnets) and doing the fireworks at 6:30 p.m. on the 31st at MK. How long before the fireworks at 6:30 p.m. should we get a spot on Main Street?

60-90 min. (or more, if the park is jammed.)
The closer to the castle you want to be, the earlier you should arrive.

You don’t specifically say this, but just making sure you know there are no special fireworks at Epcot on 12/30, only 12/31. MK does their special fireworks both nights.

But for the MK 6:30pm show on 12/31, I hesitate to give you specific advice since that’s a pretty crazy day all around, but I’d definitely err on more time than you think. And if your arrival plans are closer to show time and involve anything on the road (bus or car), build in extra time as well.

One good thing about the Fantasy in the Sky show is that there are pretty much no projections (only castle lighting changes), so while a castle view is good for the overall show viewing angle, it’s a more forgiving show for viewing in other parts of the MK (especially with the “180 degree” fireworks).

Have fun - such an awesome time at WDW.

I have a NYE question as well. We have ADR’s at Hollywood and vine at 5:20 at HS. Would we be pushing our luck that we could get into Epcot after this, due to capacity issues?

Just about anywhere in MK is good for NYE fireworks. A few years ago I found an open spot on the walkway between Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Enchanted Tales With Belle about 10 minutes before the fireworks started. Another guest near me asked a cast member if it was worth trying to find a better location and the cast member said, “It’s not going to matter because we’re about to be surrounded by fireworks.”

I sometimes hate sharing the spot but it’s the best spot for all fireworks. No projections but for pure fireworks there’s no better spot in Disney. Few know so far so there’s always room too

We watched Wishes from there too and it felt like we were right in the middle of the show. Haven't tried since HEA though.
