New Year's Eve...What r u serving?

For NYE hubby will grill wings and then sauce them in a variety of different sauces and we usually make some goopey nachos, chips and dip.. for New Year's Day I am making BBQ'd pulled pork sandwiches, greens and black eyed peas....I heard the traditional meal was lucky so I started making it 5-6 years ago and things get progressively better each year..I even make it here and there throughout the year if we need a little boost and so far it seems to work for us...hubby and the kids hate it...but even hubby is superstitious enough to choke down a spoonful of everything.

I'm not trying to be snarky at all. I have never heard there were "lucky" things to eat on New Years?!?:confused3
Is this a tradition of a certain culture?
I can't imagine taking the time to prepare food that everyone disliked because it was "lucky"

Please explain the tradition to this bewildered Canadian!

NYE is just DH, DD10 & me....DD18 is gone to a friends overnight.
we received a GC to KFC, so that will be our NYE dinner :thumbsup2 ( i vowed no cooking this year on NYE way back in October LOL:rotfl:) the only work invloved is driving to pick it up :)

I normally cook a big spread - i cook for hours and it is all over in 10 mins of eating........so not this year. We will eat on paper plates so there is no dishes either LOL

we will have leftover goodies from Christmas, Cookies, truffles, etc.

Looks Good and EASY..did u do the recipe exactly as is? I just need to go get a Punch Bowl set...Can i get 1 at Party city? or perhaps i can just get a BIG bowl...what do u use?

thanx

It was very simple. I halved the recipe. I used 1/2 a can of all three juices, one 750ml bottle of champagne and measured out 750ml of ginger ale. I also froze a gingerale ring with marischino cherries in it to float in the punch. I have a punch bowl set and used that to serve. This was for only 6 people and we had plenty left over even though we kept refilling our cups all day long!

ok probably a dumb question, BUT what did u freeze the gingerale in?

will the full recipe fit in a punch bowl u think? i'm gonna have about 12-14 adults..

My NYE will be super simple this year. My kids are almost 6 and 3 1/2, so they won't be staying up until midnight. I won't either ;)

We usually just each pick a "snacky" food, make and share all 3. Last year was cheese and crackers - older DD, meatballs - younger DD, and chips and dip - me. The dip is really yummy: layer of cream cheese, layer of chili ( I use canned turkey chili with beans), layer of cheddar cheese on top. Bake for about 30 mins, until hot and bubbly at the edges. YUM

New years day we are headed to an indoor water park in CT, so we will have whatever the hotel restaurant serves

For many many years, we ordered Chinese take-out for NYE. This year, we're taking our two boys out to an awesome Asian restaurant in town. I'm totally drooling for Chicken Lettuce Cups....

For NYD, we do the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch pork and sauerkraut, with mashed potatoes and apple sauce. This is honestly my DH's favorite meal of all time, so he loves NYD dinner!

We have a New Years "dinner" earlier around 6 so the kids can enjoy the food too! I make meatballs, little hotdogs in barbecue sauce, shrimp and cocktail sauce, smoked fish of some kind, and raw beef and onions for the adults. Sometimes my DH and I make it to midnight and sometimes we don't lol!

We are having it at our house and will include my mom, grandma, aunt and myself.

We are getting together with a few other families and having hotwings and snacky foods. Love the pizza dip recipe. I will be making that! My oreo truffles were at hit at Christmas, so will make some of those also.

Were taking the kids and going out to dinner but our local grocery has T-bone steaks and crab legs for 3.99 lb, so I guess we're having surf and turf at home with some sparking grape juice and champagne.

Pigletto,
I had always assumed that the "lucky" foods meal was a very southern thing! We always have black eyed peas for good luck and greens for wealth on New Years Day. I usually fix cornbread and garlic cheese grits, and maybe have ham with it. It's definitely a DELICIOUS tradition!! However my FIL is from New York and wasn't as excited about it as my family usually is!!:rolleyes1

Thank you for the explanations:)

I had never heard of this before so it was totally new to me!
We are going to a friends house for New Years. I think it will be an appetizer evening.
I am going to try to make sausage balls for the first time and bring some samosas for dd as she is vegetarian.

Wow NYE is getting expensive for me...

Platter - 29.99 (ordered from costco - i was going to pay 59.99 at the supermarket so saved some $$$$

New Punch Bowl - $16.99 - have to buy all the ingredients 2day..

I figure after all is said and done i will have spent about $250.00

For New Years Eve, we'll probably go out since I'm working til 5pm & my mama will have the kids. For New Years Day, I think my mama is making bacon wrapped shrimp and of course the mandatory collards, black-eyed peas, and hog-jawl (or similar pork). It must be a southern thing, b/c everyone I know eats the same thing on New Years Day.

That pizza dip recipe sounds really good!

I did this punch for Christmas and it was a big hit - would be good for the kids because there's no alcohol:

1 1/2 cups orange juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
64 oz. bottle cranberry juice
2 2-liter bottles ginger ale

Combine juices, can refrigerate a few days ahead of time. At the last minute, add the ginger ale. I made an ice ring out of the juice and floated it in the punch bowl with some lime slices. So yummy and not too sweet.
