We are arriving on 12/30/03. I know it will be crowded through 1/1/04, but I was hoping for a little more information than that.

We are staying at the Dolphin, so I was thinking EPCOT on 12/31 and MGM on 1/1. Can I expect wall-wall people, unable to move, type conditions? Will ECPOT and MGM be less crowded than MK? What about AK?

We are moving to Poly on 1/2, so we will wait on MK until we get there.

I would LOVE to hear from those of you who have been at this time of year!

I think you are on the right track. MK will be wall to wall people. The other parks will be very busy but wont seem to be as bad as MK. EC in our experience has been the best. We loved watching the intl cms countdown throughout the evening as they celebrated NY in their home countries. It was great we had dinner in Norway. We received hats and horns, then purchased champagne to toast the new year. Would recommend getting their early and staying. Have to say I have never seen so many people sleeping inside the park, guest littered any space they could find to rest until midnight. The children looked liked they had been dragged to hell in back, most were asleep. If you decide to enter the park later you are taking your chances and even a PS in the park will not guarantee you entrance that evening.

Hello Jackie H. we will be at WDW the same time as you!! We were there the same time last year and the parks really weren't all that bad except for MK!! We did have friends that went the same time also and did EMH and said that was great. We on the other hand were on vacation and took advantage of sleeping in and staying at the parks late! That I guess would be whatever you decide to do. I am going to try EMH this trip because I'm anxious to see MK in the early morning. I thought this would be my favorite park and I want to go back just to enjoy it more. The crowds were horrendous. We actually took 1 day off that was NYE. Luckily because that was the one day it rained!! We enjoyed every park and had a great time. Epcot did seem to be less crowded but Test Track always had a long wait! We never did get to ride.

You will enjoy all the wonderful and beautiful Christmas decorations!

Thank you both for your input!:p It is great to hear from someone who has actually been there at this time.

We are on-site, so if we left EPCOT we could still get back inside - couldn't we? I really want to be sure about this!!

I'm apologizing in advance since I know this will be long, but I know that before we went last year, I had many questions about crowd management and other stuff, so hopefully this will help you, and anyone else who will be there for NYE.

We were there last year December 27-January 4 and though it was pretty crowded the whole time, some days weren't so bad. The 27th was not bad at all, but we found out when we checked into AKL around 5pm that a lot of people we leaving after having spent Christmas week there and many more people were checking in that night or the next day for NYE week. So we're guessing that since it was a big transportation day, that's why the parks weren't too crowded, since people probably didn't want to waste a pass on a few hours. We ate at Boma then went to MK and got there right before the 2nd Spectro, since we had APs so using a day didn't matter. Of course Main St. was mobbed, but the rest of the park was practically a walk on, even more so once Spectro ended and people left the park in hordes.

The other day we found to be the best was January 1. We went to Epcot and even though it was it's EE day (we didn't get there till around 10), the park was practically empty. It was the first time all week that we got seated for our lunch PS immediately and were one of about 5 tables in the restaurant. I guess people were checking out and/or tired after a late night, but even TT only had like a 45 min wait (compared to the over 2 hour wait most other days).

NYE, we went to MGM and got there at 7:45, 45 minutes after EE started, and it was pretty empty. RnRC and ToT had about 5 minute waits. CMs were handing out free FPs for various attractions, which was a nice surprise, and crowds were managable all morning. After we finished breakfast at H&V (we got out around 11:30), things were getting hectic though. We used the FPs we had, got a snack, and then went to check in at the GF for the rest of our stay around 3pm. By that time MGM was packed. We went to CG for NYE so we didn't try to get back in a park, we just stayed at the resort and rented water mice. When we left MGM, however, CMs were telling guests that MK wasn't accepting guests at that time and we saw signs on the roads back to the GF that said that MK parking lot was closed and not accepting new guests. I'm not sure how long that lasted though, since it did rain later that night so I'm sure lots of people left. AK was also just as bad on Dec 30, and when we left around 2pm a CM told us that they expected it to reach capacity in less than an hour. Things thinned out after January 1, though, and it wasn't much more crowded on the 2-4 than it was when we went in February (though it was President's Weekend).

Despite the crowds, we had a great time, and since we got up for EE everyday, took naps, then stayed out till park closing, we saw everything we wanted to at least twice. Of course it helped that we were there for 8.5 days, so we didn't feel rushed. But the best tool we had was EE. They did a good job of keeping out non-resort guests which was such a help so that you could actually get a lot done during that first hour, so that way when the rest of the park opened, you could do the 'less-popular" attractions while all the non-resort guests were rushing to the big rides. Also, we planned our meals so that we had either a late breakfast or early lunch around 10:45-11:15 everyday. Doing this also helped a lot since we got a break while people were busy with rides, and when we finished eating many people were heading for lunch, which helped the lines considerably. That plan worked well for us so you may want to try it out, but no matter what you'll have a great trip!

As for AK, it doesn't stay open late for NYE. Last Dec 31 they closed at 6 PM. Personally, unless (like you) I was staying at a resort I could easily walk to from the park, there's no way I'd consider spending NYE in the park.

We spent NYE at WDW last year, but we used reverse-psych. On Dec 31 we started at MGM and then bugged out when it got too crowded and went to AK, knowing that it closed early and probably wouldn't be too popular on NYE. We were right, and the crowd at AK was very, very light. (In contrast, a CM there told us they closed MK to entry around 11 AM that day.) We easily were able to see everything we wanted to see before it closed. We then went back to the HIFS and "celebrated" NYE there a little early and went to bed. Jan 1 was EMH at MK and we figured it would be a slow morning as the party crowd slept in. We were right again and the park didn't get busy until around noon. By that time we were able to do a ton of rides.

justhat, That's interesting... They must of had two EMH's that day because they did it at MK on Jan 1 too!

i guess so far i am the only person who has replied that has been at WDW at midnight on new year's, which to me is the whole point.

So far, I have been twice - 12/31/00 and 12/31/01 and it really wasnt that bad. both times we were staying off site so we go to the parks at about 8/9 am and stayed till about 1230/1am. both times we were at our car and out of the parking lot in less than 20 minutes.

I have done MGM and MK, and i think MK is better. There is more to do since the park is bigger and the fireworks at midnight are better (actually they are the best ever!) my advice is to get there early, get lots of fastpasses, make a lunch and a dinner PS and you'll be fine. we rode every ride we wanted to at least once if not twice or 3 times. bring a deck of cards to give yourself something to do during the "dead time" (we found we had about an hour of time where we didnt feel like going on anymore rides, but felt it was too early to stake out our fireworks spot. it was really cold like 40/50 degrees both years, so we sat inside and played cards) have a great time, i wish i was there this year!!

Geoff_M, we had family members staying at Universal over NYE too and they said when they got to MK about 10 minutes before opening on January 1, they were surprised to many people already in the park. A CM told them that it was an EE morning, which surprised them since they thought it was Epcot, which it also was. I guess maybe they did it for crowd purposes?

Last year they opened up two parks on a couple of morning for ee between Christmas and New Yaer's. That really helped with the early crowds. I hope they do it again this year.

Thank you so much for these posts! THis really helps me a lot in my planning.

justthat, don't apologize for the length of your post, I wanted detail!

I just can't decide if we should do EPCOT on NYE & MGM on NYDay or the opposite (MGM on NYE, EPCOT on NYDay). I was thinking that EPCOT could handle the NYE crowds better - is that true?

I KNOW we will want to see the NYE fireworks, but staying at the Dolphin we can watch them from there somewhere if the parks get completely out of hand crowd-wise.

Thanks again!

We will be there on NYE this year.

I was thinking that Epcot has the most space thus the most comfortable. I want to make a PS about 7pm and get to the park about 6PM.

Is ther any chance this will work???? I know they close MK every year due to crowd size,. My guess would be that MGM would go next due to size??

Anyone out there know a little about this??

I was thinking the same thing, but Tyler (AKA Chip'nDale Express on these boards) instructs me that NYE is EPCOT's busiest day of the year.

Thread about capacity crowds

If I did this right, there should be a link to another thread about capcity crowds at that time of year.

Check it out.
