New Year Job Rants, Raves and Dreams

I am a family physician in a small, midwest community. It is an almost ideal setting for family medicine, because the town is small enough that I know most of the people on sight, and many of the people have lived here for generations. I have cared for 4 generations of one family, and every day I learn more about the families that I care for. Yesterday, I took care of the 6mo child of the SIL of the person who does my hair, whose children are my patients. Her aunt is my patient, and another aunt (who is deceased) was the wife of the current mayor of the small town I live in.

The hospital is family medicine predominant, and therefore, most of the specialists don't have full time practices in the community. They are here for a few days a week, and in some cases, not at all on the weekends, which can make weekend call very stressful for the family doctor. The worst part of my practice now is "No Doc" call. When a patient comes to our ER and doesn't see a doctor routinely who is on staff at our hospital, it is assigned to the doctor on "No Doc" call. Quite frankly, alot of these patients are non-compliant and have neglected their health needs. I was on call this past weekend and also New Years Day. I had "No Doc" call Friday and yesterday (usually each doctor on the "No Doc" list gets "No Doc" call about once a month, so twice in one week is unusual).

Another bad thing is that alot of people really don't know what training a family physician has. We aren't general practitioners, which is a person who has graduated from medical school and completed a one year internship in order to get a medical license. They are not residency trained. I am residency trained and board certified, just like a general internist or pediatrician would be. I take care of all kinds of problems, but, there are some things that I am not trained to do (like brain surgery or psychotherapy), so, I need to refer to a specialist.

Number one reason I will not practice adult medicine except when deployed by the Army and non-compliance isn't a big problem in those circumstances.

Seriously though it's good to see someone who enjoys family practice. There aren't enough of you types to go around in many, many places.

Great thread, Dave!

In real life, I'm a sales engineer for a material handling company near Cincinnati. We design and integrate the material handling systems (conveyor, etc) for the distribution centers of large retail companies across the US. I was previously in project management/engineering for nine years and was recently promoted to our sales force, and I love it. Should've gone down this path a long time ago.

I used to think my dream job would be to work for Imagineering at Disney, but I love what I do now and I can't imagine giving this up for a job in WDW engineering that is probably not near as glamourous as one would imagine.

My true dream job would be to retire and work as one of the boat captains on the ferrys that shuttle people around WDW. I'm sure life wouldn't be perfect, but I could sure think of worse places to be every day. :)

My dream jobs?
- Have my own cooking show
- Be the race director at a major marathon
- Dress up as a character at Disney and let visitors take pictures with me. :rotfl2:

Seriously, I would like to find a job that also utilizes my language skill and project management experience. I am in the midst of finding employment in Asia - my background is in IT, completed MBA, and fluent in several foreign languages. So, if anyone have any connections to Asia, let me know. :)

I am an Electrical Engineer with a specialty in controls. I work for a large communications company. Most of it deals with pointing antennas at the proper spot and keeping them in that location under the worst circumstances. Imagine pointing a laser pointer at a spot on the wall and holding it in the exact spot without any movement. At times I help with mechanized objects as well. It is a great job and I have a great time there.

As for dream job, it has probably changed over the years but I can see staying here until I retire. After that I would love to travel and go on cruises but first I have to get a couple of kids through college to support me later on. :lmao:

Great topic. I work for GE and have for 29 years. I've had many positions from Accounting Manager to HR Manager to my current role as Facilities and EHS Leader. It is pretty fun actually. I just had a big project remodeling the lobby and building some new offices. This kind of stuff makes it fun.

I also have my Real Estate Brokers license. My wife and I have a Real Estate office and she is the managing Broker. Glad we both don't rely on real estate income right now.

I don't really have a dream job. I love to travel so maybe something in the travel industry might be fun. But when it's a job it isn't as much fun as doing it on your own.

Keep the stories coming,
Duane

I am also a Physician Assistant and practiced family medicine and occupational medicine (for a major airline ;) ). I am doing my pre-retirement dream job right now of staying home and raising 3 crazy boys.:) I am able to do this because DH is an attorney for a major central Illinois tractor company. He loves his job and is doing well. He just got promoted again and will head up the legal department in Asia/Pacific. Hence the move to Singapore.

I've tried to get him interested in a Disney legal career but he isn't biting. Think of the discounts I could get!

When I hit retirement, my dream job is to be the Fairy Godmother. DH mentioned playing the piano outside of Casey's. Wouldn't that be fun?! We've got a 5 year old who is an aspiring monorail driver, too.

Well someday i'll hopefully have something impressive to post, but i'm still a work in progress. I am an instructor at the local community college, teaching students how to be registered nurses. I also work every other weekend as an RN in the ICU where I previously worked full time.

I have a few things i'd like to "eventually" do. One being to design software for hospitals that is actually user friendly and created by people familiar with bedside nursing (or at least get the hospital I work at to convert to something like that). Another thing i'm exploring is the possiblity of working as a nurse educator for one of the seminar companies, go somewhere for the weekend and teach a certification course. And yet another option is go back to school again (after the current bout) for my Nurse Anesthesitist. That is all when my daughter is older though and I am much more educated :) Another pipe dream was to go overseas with doctors without borders, maybe someday.

I am a Firefighter/Paramedic & I think it is the coolest job on the planet. I came to this relatively late, so I only have about 7 years in, but plan to stay here until I retire.

You marathoners will see me on my bike riding the course for the full doing the "Bike Medic" thing for the 3rd year.

I'm running the 1/2, so I have made sure my friends on the bikes for that have fully charged AED batteries!! :lmao:

I am a retired Navy Commander (took an early out in the 90's). Flew the S-3 Viking.

Dreams for the year?
To get promoted at work.
To be a bit more "adventure" oriented & more social.
To get my DW to relax some & do the same.
To finish my 1st Triathlon (maybe 2 or 3. Who Knows?)
SOMEHOW get my incredibly smart DS to be more motivated in school.

Job Rants?
Underpaid (who isn't?)
Have to come into work every shift behind a real prick.
Other than that, not much.

I'm the manager of employee communications for a regional health insurance company. With my staff of 2, I'm responsible for cultivating employee loyalty by distributing true, timely, and meaningful business news to the workforce of 5,000+. I also have smaller "employee PR" responsibilities such as Christmas parties, CEO "meet & greets," and organizing volunteer service for the employees. Been in the position for 4 years, with the company for 21.

I HATE HATE HATE MY JOB. But, the pay is good, great benefits, great hours, and very easy commute. It's been perfect for these years of motherhood, so I really can't complain.

My dream job would be a high school Spanish teacher.

DH owns and runs his own video production company. In 2007 he won his 2nd and 3rd Emmys.

It's nice to know when I need a physician or attorney, I can find one in my running club!

I am a professor of finance at Babson College. We are a small college of management, and I've been here 10+ years.

I love my job. The only employee I manage is me, and I always know where I am and what I'm doing. I get to work with fascinating colleagues, and over 95% of my students are outstanding young people; energetic, funny, and clever. On the occasional day when I walk into class in a crabby mood, they always bring me out of it.

Unfortunately although I love my job I no longer love my employer, especially since my division isn't a part of our strategic direction (funny, even though finance majors dominate our graduates by far, and they get the best and highest paying jobs upon graduation, go figure :rolleyes1 ). In the fall semester I was a visiting professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management, and I'm doing everying I can to make the MIT gig either a regular visiting thing, or a permanent thing.

My dream job is to be a wing midfielder for an elite English Premiership club like Arsenal, Liverpool, or Man U. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any demand from these clubs for washed-up Americans, since they still haven't signed me to a contract.

Hello..wow so many successful and interesting jobs :).

In my former life (pre kids) I worked in International sales and marketing and spent some time in the Asia-Pacific region :). I then switched to domestic sales as the travel was getting a bit too much. But for the past 8 years I've been a SAHM! Wow..8 years...how time flies!!!

Last year I decided to move in a new direction and follow my passion. I've practiced Pilates for about 10 years but last year it became more than an interest to me. After getting injured during marathon training...and having tried everything from chiropractics to physical therapy and beyond...I found that the only thing that helped me recover and truly made it possible to finish the marathon in 2007 was my Pilates practice. Soon after returning from WDW 07 marathon...I began my Pilates study and certification. I love helping people get healthy and stronger...I love working with people who are overcoming injuries or health issues...I really truly enjoy being in gyms and fitness centers and yoga studios each and every day. It has helped me stay focused...and I've received a lot of support for my running. I certainly don't do this job for the money...and it's a lot of hours and work...as I'm teaching a ton of classes now...but I really do enjoy it!!

My dream: to open my own pilates studio someday.

Anyway...cool thread. Thanks :)

I'm a teacher, I was born to be a teacher. My dream is to be a classroom teacher full time once again!!

My rant is I'm a substitute teacher - and I love working with the 5 - 8th grade kids! But its very hard for me to get a full time job various reasons, but 3 important ones - DS, DS, and DD.

I work as an admin. coordinator at the head office of a bank. I've been there for about 1.5 years. I can't say that I dislike the job or the work because I've never really been given any - a manager in my group insists on doing it ALL! So the only things I get to do are the occasional photocopy or fax ... or my favourite - the coffee run :headache: I know she's worried about the possibility of being replaced so she's not a very good mentor or explaining how things are done or work. I can't even speak to my boss about more responsibilities because he's never in the office :sad2: Oh well, one of my New Year's resolution is to find a new job!

One of my dream jobs would be to become a nutritionist :goodvibes I'm still on the fence about that one because it requires that I go back to school which means I'd have two B.A.s I'm also looking to buy a house so I don't know if it would be a good move financially.

A couple of cool jobs I've had in the past were movie production and voice acting!
